Today we have Katie Reus back to celebrate her upcoming Carina Press release, Dangerous Secrets (Feb 7). She’s talking about Doughnuts and Expectations. I’ll be honest, she had me at Doughnuts.

Have you ever built something up in your mind that there’s no way it can possibly live up to your expectations? Last year I moved to a very cute, coastal town in the South. There’s this doughnut shop in the middle of downtown that almost everyone I’ve come in contact with says has THE BEST doughnuts in the world. Like literally. People are so quick to sing praises about this shop and the near obsession is scary. Due to timing it took me about six months to finally make it to the shop.
But one weekend there was a huge art festival downtown and there was a line out the door of the shop so we (I dragged my husband with me) decided to bite the bullet and buy one of these damn doughnuts. Instead of buying one each we decided to buy a box and try all their samples. I was so excited, imagining that first creamy bite and how amazingly awesome it would be. Sadly…major disappointment. I can’t even tell you the utter dejection that surged through me after that bite. The doughnut I tried was good (it is a doughnut after all) but it tasted like a regular Krispy Kreme. There was nothing cosmic about it. I didn’t hear angels singing and it sure as hell didn’t taste like an orgasm in my mouth (as some people swore it would). And it was the same with the rest of the samples…most of which we ended up tossing. Even though I was disappointed it didn’t live up to my expectations, I think in a way it’s probably a good thing my taste buds weren’t bowled over by them because otherwise, I’d be visiting their shop every week.
Thanks again to the fabulous ladies at The Book Binge for letting me hang out here today! Dangerous Secrets, my first release with Carina Press comes out on February 7 (and hopefully won’t be a disappointment to anyone like those freaking doughnuts). Anyone who leaves a comment will automatically be entered to win a book from my backlist. Check out my website for a complete list. Good luck!
A little about me: I’ve been reading romance since I was a kid and the addiction stayed with me into adulthood. I write sexy paranormal romance and fast-paced romantic suspense. And in February 2012, Alpha Instinct, my first book in a paranormal trilogy will release from Signet Eclipse (NAL/Penguin). I’m kind of bummed that those doughnuts weren’t all they were cracked up to be. I was so excited. Sigh.

Hey Katie!
Fun post! And thanks for introducing me to The Book Binge! Wicked cool cover for Dangerous Secrets. Congrats on the release. Now, for the doughnuts. Pretty much the only ones I’ll eat are the cute little powdered ones you buy in a bag at the grocery store, but since I’m the only one in my family who likes them I try to save them for a special treat!

How disappointing, I am still looking for the perfect doughnut myself and had hopes you had found it 🙁
Never mind at least I found out about your book instead 😀 Looks a great story and I love the cover art 😀
Hey Casey! I like the grocery store kind too, but I go for the mini chocolate ones 🙂 (and now I’m craving one!)
Me too, Ilona! But I won’t give up my search for the perfect one 😉 Thanks for stopping by!
Katie, Katie, Katie- I was so hopeful as I began to read this post and then, bam, you crushed me. You wicked, wicked tease.
Love your cover and can’t wait to read the newest! Jillian
I live to tease, Jillian! And imagine my disappointment in actually eating them 😉
Congratulations on your uopcoming release!
I recently bought a package of Drake’s Butterscotch Krimpets. I LOVED these when I was a child and hadn’t had them in probably 35 years. OMG! They were tasteless. I was crushed. I wrote to the company and they kindly sent me a check for almost $4.50 (I guess the price of a box), but I had only paid $1.49 for the single pack. So, they made me feel a little better.

Congrats on your new release!
I think donuts always look better than they taste.
It totally sucks to really look forward to something and then be let down. I’ve been disappointed so many times that I’m always a little leary when people rave over something until I can prove it for myself. But I have to admit – I haven’t yet met a doughnut I haven’t liked – unless it’s the one laying on the floor 🙂 Congrats on your release – love romantic suspense. annhonATaolDOTcom
Thanks Anne! That really sucks, especially since it’s a childhood memory 🙁 Though it is pretty cool they gave you a refund!
You’re right, Estella, and that’s probably a good thing!
Cybercliper, I’d probably say no to anything lying on the floor too, lol 🙂
I think it sucks when you are so looking forward to something and it just turns out to be blah. I’m like that with movies. I hate when I see something that everyone has been raving about and it totally sucks.

Fun post Katie! When that happens to me I figure it’s fate saying that my hips don’t need it. If they could just make buttered popcorn and pizza taste terrible.
Sorry – forgot to say that chocolate doesn’t count, it’s medicinal.
Love the post, Katie! So sorry I’m a day late, but any bad weather north of Nashville knocks out my satellite internet in South Mississippi.?.? (Go figure!)
I have every confidence in your writing! No disappointing doughnuts there! lol Looking forward to the 7th and a copy of DANGEROUS SECRETS.
Danielle, that’s definitely a disappointment. Lately I find myself just waiting until movies come out on video!
Mary, pizza or carbs in general are definitely my downfall so it really is a good thing those doughnuts didn’t do it for me 😉 And yes, chocolate totally doesn’t count!
Thanks Runere! I feel ya on the internet. Sometimes it just takes a harsh wind for us. So annoying 🙂
Food and movies are probably what gets the most hype, get me all excited and will fall flat when they don’t meet my expectations. I don’t even go to the movie theater anymore, I just wait to rent them.
I don’t think you have to worry about your new release, Katie. I am lovin the excerpt and storyline and can’t wait to read it.
Have a great weekend.

There is a small country town about 2 hours away from where I live and in the middle of nowhere really which has awesome donuts. It is almost worth the drive just to get one!
Can someone advise whether having an email address in the Blogger profile counts as “including a valid email address with your comment”? thx
I’m always up for trying a new author; thanks for the opportunity. Mmm, doughnuts… I get a free dozen every year from Krispy Kreme on my birthday. Don’t worry, I don’t eat all of them!
