One of the best things about writing with a partner is that we get two perspectives on any given subject. All right, sometimes that is the most maddening thing about writing with partner too. But in the end, we are of the opinion that if we can agree on any given subject, that we are moving in the right direction.

We were in complete agreement when it came to the genre we were going to write together. Of course, there are other paranormal/historical romances on the market, but not too many. And we each brought something different to the table. Tammy was working on a paranormal romance and Jodie was working on a Regency romance when we decided to team up. Therefore, it was only natural that we merge our two interests and create a world that was uniquely ours.

And we have been having a blast ever since. Jodie has adored the freeing aspect that comes along with paranormal characters and world building, while Tammy has enjoyed the more restricted rules that come along with Regency England. In this new world that we’ve created together, we each have a niche where we feel comfortable.

When we embarked on creating this alternate historical world with all sorts of paranormal creatures, neither of us expected that a mere two years later we’d be talking about a series of books and certainly not one with ten possible titles. In fact, we weren’t certain we’d even be able to write one book. It seemed a little daunting that we’d have to collaborate and actually agree. As it turned out, we actually work well together and have had the best time creating our world and filling it with paranormal creatures of various kinds.

Our first four books starred werewolf men (or Lycans, if you’d rather) and a couple of them also include witches from a coven based in Edinburgh. Readers may or may not pick up on our first vampyre who is briefly introduced in The Taming of the Wolf which is now on shelves. And the trilogy due out next year features vampyres of one sort or another cast as the main heroes. So our world of paranormal creatures is growing a bit. But the island that is Great Britain is only so big.

And that makes us continually wonder if we are growing our paranormal world too quickly, or if we should stick with those three staples of paranormal romance – werewolves, witches and vampyres. What do you think? Is there room in Regency England for other paranormal creatures? And if so, what would you like to see?

Lydia Dare is an active member of the Heart of Carolina Romance Writers and sits on the organization’s board of directors. She lives in a house filled with boys and an animal or two (or 10) near Raleigh, NC.

As long as you can make it fit in your world, bring them on. I always think that shape shifting dragons bring something to the party.

  2. Since paranormal creatures have supposedly existed since the dawn of time, why not Regency England?

Elves and fae definitely could have been around since they’re practically the original nature spirits. Demons would work, too, but perhaps with some limitations because all-powerful creatures are not that fun. Of course, I’m no writer so it’s not up to me. 🙂

How about giant insect shifters around the moors?

  3. I’m not that big of a fan of the “everything but the kitchen sink” type of paranormal unless it makes sense in the world you’ve already laid out. I think sticking with vamps, witches and werewolves should be enough.

  4. Regency England is the perfect place for the FEY!! The physical beauty for the clothes, the snooty, bored attitude so coveted by the ton, and the intelligence and physical strength to remove any threat to them. The Fey would so rule Regency England! annhonATaolDOTcom

  5. Since it’s England, you have soo much opportunity with the Scottish and Irish fae and spirits. So I vote for the fae, or elves, sprites and the like.

I enjoy Paranormal and ofcourse Regency England so I love to see the two married together.

I’d like to see some less common shifters and beings make a show – aside from the wolves, vamps, witches, and wizards :). Maybe even some derived from local legends?

Lydia’s series looks awesome and I’ve seen a ton of great reviews on the books!

  7. I say that if people can switch into wolves then they can probably switch into other animals. I’d also love to see psychics and others in that realm introduced. From what I’ve seen of Lydia’s writing, I think she can handle any of it or none of it and still make us books that are fantastic reads.

I didn’t even realize you were a writing team. I already have those three books (and have the new one in my B&N cart), but I wanted to say I love the books 🙂

  9. I am a huge Paranormal & UF Romance Groupy!. My TBR pile & list grows by the hour. Especially now that I’ve found all these Awesome Blogs to subscribe to 😉
I definitely think there is room for other creatures in Regency Romance.. Maybe gargoyles or (more likely)ghosts but after googling for the last hour, I’ve found that popular myths & superstitions from the 1800’s one of which is an interesting story about a Woman In White (A New York Ghost Story by S. E. Schlosser) along with a few cool extinct wild animals, one of which could be made into a cool shifter creature story is: The Thylacine aka-Tasmanian Tiger. It’s like dog/wolf face w/tiger type body. Spirit Mediums were popular back then & can be shoe in with witches & warlocks & there’s hardly any books out there w/warlock heroes. Also another great read would be ghosts of popular people from back then (kings, queens, redcoats 😉 whomever that seems interesting, and embed them into a broach or some old artifact.
These stories probably already exist & I just haven’t read them yet. I wish I was a writer but I guess I am a better researcher and firearms specialist.
Great contest question & post. I love learning from posts about new authors & their books. You are new to me & your books sound awesome! I’m adding this series to my list just in case I’m not lucky enough to win this very generous prize. Have a great day ;D

Yes! There is always room for fairies, especially when you’re in England and Scotland.

  11. I love paranormal and UF books. Paranormal books got me back into reading. It had been a good 10 years since the last book I read. Motherhood and being a housewife was time consuming, but at the same time I felt like I was missing something, I just didn’t know what. 10 years later I felt like I lost who I was and didn’t recognize myself outside of mother and hunny. Going out and re-discovering all these amazing books was a huge turning point for me and I fell in love again and gave myself pieces of me back. I have dived into the paranormal and have even picke up some historical and regency books. Paranormal Regency is a new one for me and one I really really want to dive into. It sounds fascinating. I think there is plenty of room for other paranormal creatures in regency England 🙂 I would love to see Demons and Fae and more shifters. Bring em on ’cause I’ll be there ready to buy them LOL Your a new author for me, but I can’t wait to devour the world that you guys have created
