Kris‘ review of Taking Fury by India Masters
A standalone story in the Hunters for Hire series.
Anari Fury—daughter, sister, fiancée. Life on Sa-Ro Five is good…until a ruthless pirate spies her. Refusing his advances sets in motion a chain of events that will change her life forever.
Taken from the only home she’s known, Anari is sold as a sex slave. But she possesses a secret that puts her at even greater risk than that posed by the man who uncovers desires she never suspected—a frightening man with opaque gray eyes and a past that could get them both killed.
Duncan Storm is an AWOL super soldier. Conscience drove him from the IMF. Necessity drove him to Bounty Hunters, Inc. But Duncan’s skills are no match for the woman destined to teach him the one thing he’s never known…love.
Together, Duncan and Anari must fight to regain control of a technology capable of providing a better life for millions, or destroying entire worlds. Along the way, both will learn what it means to give their all for the love of another.
This is a futuristic romance with some BDSM elements. It is not a BDSM story though. The story begins with Anari on the auction block being sold in the slave market. She was basically stolen off of her planet because she refused the advances of a slimy trader and when he would not take no for an answer she made it very unlikely for him every to father children. So in retaliation he is selling her as a slave and hoping that an evil man will purchase her virgin self and humiliate and hurt her too.
She is purchased by a scary looking man who turns out to be a bounty hunter that has been hired to rescue her. But to get off the planet they have to make a show of her humiliation. Anari is a very strong willed woman who has been a teacher and a farmer but who has recently watched her fiance killed in front of her and knows little of love or sex. Understandably, she has a hard time with having to put on a show in front of others to show her humiliation, but Duncan shows her that he can make it pleasurable too. He teaches her and her body about pleasure and she teaches him about feelings.
The book began with a glossary of terms for this world, so it was nice to have that established world building before the story began. This was a stand alone story and I did not feel like I was missing anything or lost at any point like you sometimes feel in stories that are from a series. It was very well written. The characters had depth and growth over the course of the story and I cared about them and wanted to see what happened to them. Anari was smart and strong, she was a good heroine. She discovered during the story that she liked to be dominated in side the bedroom but definitely not outside of it. Duncan was interesting to watch him try to sort out emotions he was not used to feeling. I wish we had seen a little more from his POV. The love scenes were nice and hot and not too numerous to make them wash, rinse and repeat.
I am interested to read more in this series, I think her sisters’ story were part of the series and am interested in reading those. Very good book, I will be looking for more by her.
I give this a
4 out of 5
