Back-To-School Giveaway: Day 1 – Bag of Swag

Posted September 1, 2010 by Holly in Giveaways | 65 Comments

Harlequin sent me these amazing beach bags as part of their Big Summer Romance promo. Each beach bag includes 2 of Harlequin’s Summer Romance recommendations, a beach mat, a hat and sunglasses. We’ll be giving these away throughout the month.

As awesome as this bag is, I was thinking it could probably be just a tad bit more awesome if maybe I added a little more swag to it. What’s better than getting a beach bag filled with beach accessories and a couple books? A beach bag filled with beach accessories, book swag and many books. Right?

So here’s what we’ve got for you today:

For our first day kick-off, we have some school questions for you. Leave your answer in comments by Monday, September 6th @ 11:59 PDT. Winners will be announced each week on Sunday.

  31. May I say that these questions are tougher than they seem? It’s been a helluva long time since I was in school, people!!!

    *ahem*

What was your most memorable book in high school?
Not my favorite by any means, but one of the most memorable is Aztec, by Gary Jennings (historical setting, but I’m not going to go into the ‘accuracy’ part of it–blech)

Who was your favorite character from your childhood books?
Henri de Lagardère, from Paul Féval Pére’s novel Le Bossu. Mind you, this is a romance/adventure novel set in the late 1600s to very early 1700s, with swashbuckling and heroic self-sacrifice in abundance, but when I was very very young (as in before-kindergarten-age-young) my mother would tell us the novel (by heart!) while driving across Mexico City from home to the various schools–and then some more on the way back.

What is a book that you have passed down to your children?
Well, following tradition (if it works, why fix it, right?) I read aloud to my kids from some of my favorites–Black Beauty, Call of the Wild, White Fang, The Little Princess, Mysterious Island… Gah, too many to list! (And I’m very blessed, for both my children are avid readers)

Did your love of reading begin in school?
😀 Actually, well before school–see the answer to the second question.

    Thank you, ladies!

What was your most memorable book in high school? I guess, Snitch by Allison Di Vipen (something like that). It’s the one that started it all for me. And also ‘A Rogue Of My OWn’ by Johanna Lindsey because it was the first book to set me down my historical romance loving path!

Who was your favorite character from your childhood books?
I love Ariel from the Little Mermaid (although flounder stole my heart too).

What is a book that you have passed down to your children?
No children yet. But I would probably pass down ‘Crossing Oceans’ by Gina Holmes. It was a book about the deepest sort of love, and when my kids make it to their teenage years and start telling me how I ruin their lives, I’ll make them read this book and see how us mothers will do anything and everything for our children.

*I’ve always been an avid reader. I had an obsession with books before I could read. It started with the little golden books 🙂 I get that from my dad. We use to spend summer’s with him, we’re not that close and sometimes it would be a little awkward. Him and my step mom always had a book in their hands and didn’t watch t.v. so my sis and I would always grab a book also. When they would have to work they would sometimes just drop us off at the library where we would spend most of the day

1] What was your most memorable book in high school?
The one that comes to mind is The Enchanted Forest by Enid Blyton. I guess I always had a liking for the paranormal 🙂

2] Who was your favorite character from your childhood books?
    – Nancy Drew

3] What is a book that you have passed down to your children?
Don’t have children. But when I do have them, I plan on passing on Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, Famous Five , a few Enid Blytons, Harry Potter and the Mallory Towers series (a series about girls in a boarding school)

4] Did your love of reading begin in school?
    – Yup. In my school, we had a class called reading or library time or something like that. We only checked out one book at that time. We are given 2 weeks to read the book, then we had to exchange it for something else at the next class. At the beginning of the class our teacher would take us to the library, place 60 books near the front row (that’s how many students we had in class) and we had to take one book and pass the rest. There was quite a bit of competition on getting the front row seats so you could pick the “best” book 🙂

  47. Favourite book in high school – The HitchHikers Guide to the Galaxy (the whole 6 of the trilogy actually).

Favourite character from your childhood books – Winnie the Pooh

  58. Wow ladies, you guys are so generous!!

Let’s see, when I was in high school I loved Christopher Pike. Anyone of his books could be listed as a favorite of mine.

There was this book called Andrew Henry’s Meadow that my father read to me as a little girl. It was published in the 1950s so needless to say that book is no longer being published. However I was able to purchase a used copy off of Amazon.com a few years back. I read that book to my daughter and plan to read it to my son.

I think my love of reading began as a child when my father would read to me at bedtime. Those are some of my most cherished memories with my Dad.
