Tracy’s review of Two-Week Trial by Missy Jane
Hi. My name is Mari. I’m of average height, average weight, average looks and I hold an average position at Hardy’s All Goods, my personal version of retail hell. To sum up, I’m nothing special. So why has Devon Campbell, the city’s Most Eligible Bachelor—and my unrequited high-school crush—suddenly crashed back into my life, claiming I’m the one who got away?
Devon has always had a thing for Mari – starting from his 8th grade year he always wanted to talk to her but never had the guts to do it. Mari had only been in 6th grade at the time but when she saw Devon’s friends laughing she thought they were laughing at her, not at Devon because he was a bumbling fool. Mari moved away but came back when she was in 10th grade and Devon in 12th. Again he tried to talk to her but he always got in his own way and couldn’t even ask her to the prom.
Now Devon is a wealthy businessman and he hired a PI to track Mari down. He’s determined that they will be together. Mari isn’t so sure that they will be together. She’s just an average girl trying to eek out a living at a local retail store. She’s a little overwhelmed by the attention that Devon gives her but she’s willing to give him a two week trial.
I thought this was a cute story but I did have some issues with the characters. First Devon was a little too gung-ho with Mari at first for my liking. Now looking at it from his point of view he had waited a damn long time to be with Mari so I could kind of understand where he was coming from…however the very first date he was all over her like an octopus and frankly it was a little creepy. He did get better and by the end of the book while I didn’t love his character I did like him a lot better. Mari’s character was very reserved and from what I read about her childhood she had every right to be. But despite that she still was very open to Devon which I thought was a tad…well, out of character. There was also a strange incident that involved Mari’s boss that I would have preferred to have not been in the story at all but that’s just me of course.
Despite my niggles with the characters I thought it was a good story with a very sweet romance involved.
Rating: 3 out of 5
