Casee‘s review of His Darkest Hunger by Juliana Stone.

Jaxon Castille: jaguar shifter, warrior, assassin. He has long hungered for the chance to make his former lover, Libby Jamieson, pay for her deadly betrayal. After three long years he’s finally found her. The hunt is over . . .

But the Libby that he finds is not what he expected. She has no memory of their tumultuous affair, of her treachery, of anything beyond her own name. A shadowy and deadly clan has marked them both for death, and in an instant, he game changes: the hunter has become the hunted.

On the run, with the ghosts of their past between them and a dark, desperate hunger quickly reclaiming their bodies and souls, Libby and Jaxon must discover the truth behind the dark forces working against them. Together, they must grab hold of a destiny that has the power to either heal them or destroy them.

But the truth is far more shattering than anyone could imagine . . .

I’m really into paranormal these days so when I read the blurb, I wanted to read it. It’s the first book in a shape-shifter series. I read the first few pages and was hooked. It’s not in every book that the hero is preparing to kill the heroine for [insert slight here].

Jaxon is a jaguar shifter. After three years of searching, Jaxon has finally found the woman that betrayed him. Revenge has kept Jaxon going for years so when he gets a lead on Libby, he immediately follows it with no thought to where the info came from. For three years Jaxon has been waiting to kill Libby. When it comes down to it, he can’t kill her. That doesn’t mean that he can’t get his revenge. The only problem is that Libby has no idea who he is.

I’m generally not a huge fan of amnesia storylines, but it worked here. Libby has no memory beyond the past two months. When Jaxon comes into the diner she’s working at, she’s both drawn to and repelled by him. When someone takes a shot at Jaxon, he takes Libby and runs. Nothing is going to stop him from getting the answers he so desperately needs.

Libby was such a sad character. Thinking about the vulnerability she must have felt is sad. She gets taken by a man that terrifies her. One that obviously hates her. Something bad happened to Libby and although she doesn’t remember details, she does know that she won’t go back. After a few aborted escape attempts, Jaxon gets Libby to go with him without incident.

Jaxon is torn by his attraction to Libby. She doesn’t remember anything, but he remembers everything. His reaction to her sickens him and that reaction breaks Libby’s heart. That’s why it’s so awesome when she gets her memory back. When she remembers who Jaxon is and that he abandoned her to be abused for three years, all she feels is rage. At herself and Jaxon.

Libby needs Jaxon’s help to get back something of hers. And she won’t take no for an answer. Libby ended up being a very strong heroine. I was really impressed by her.

4 out of 5.

Great review. Sounds like a good book. I love stories with sad, lonely people in them and have no problem with amnesia. I’ll have to check it out. Thanks!
