Monthly Reads: January

Posted February 9, 2010 by Casee in Features | 40 Comments

Casee: I’ve been in sort of a reading lull lately. I wouldn’t exactly call it a slump. It’s more like I can’t be bothered to read right now. Which annoys the ever living crap out of me. These days, I seem to get the most reading done during my lunch hour. My grand total for the month of January is eleven books.

  1. Street Game by Christine Feehan (2.75/5)
  2. Master of Fire by Angela Knight (3.75/5)
  3. Shades of Midnight by Lara Adrian (3.25/5)
  4. Original Sin by Allison Brennan (4.25/5)
  5. Sleep No More by Susan Crandall (2.75/5)
  6. Stolen Seduction by Elisabeth Naughton (4/5)
  7. Dying Scream by Mary Burton (3.5/5)
  8. Coming Undone by Lauren Dane
  9. Too Hot To Hold by Stephanie Tyler
  10. Ecstasy Unveiled by Larissa Ione
  11. Hold On Tight by Stephanie Tyler

The book that I’m giving away is Ecstasy Unveiled by Larissa Ione.

Rowena: I didn’t start off this year with the same enthusiasm that I started off last year and I hope that’s not an indication of how my reading will turn out this year. I didn’t read as many books as I had hoped I would but I still think I did …okay.

Here’s my list:

  1. Betrayed by P.C. and Kristin Cast (4.5 out of 5).
  2. Chosen by P.C. and Kristin Cast (4.5 out of 5).
  3. Untamed by P.C. and Kristin Cast (4 out of 5).
  4. The Elusive Bride by Stephanie Laurens (3.75 out of 5).
  5. At the Duke’s Pleasure by Tracy Anne Warren (4 out of 5).
  6. The Bargain Bride by Barbara Metzger (1.5 out of 5).
  7. Hunted by P.C. and Kristin Cast (3.75 out of 5).
  8. The Dark Highlander by Karen Marie Moning (4.75 out of 5).
  9. Lessons from a Scarlet Lady by Emma Wildes (4.75 out of 5).
  10. Wrapped in Seduction by Lisa Renee Jones, Cathryn Fox and Jodi Lynn Copeland.
  11. Paradise Rules by Beth Kery.
  12. Bound by Your Touch by Meredith Duran (4.25 out of 5).

The book that I’m going to give away this month is: Lessons from a Scarlet Lady by Emma Wildes. I really enjoyed that book and hope that others will enjoy it as well!

Holly: My reading this month wasn’t too bad. I’ve decided to stop castigating myself when I don’t read a high number of books. I read 15 books and I figure that’s pretty darn good. That averages out to be about a book every other day.

The Immortal Highlander by Karen Marie Moning (re-read) 4/5
Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake by Sarah Maclean 4.5/5
Silent Scream by Karen Rose 4.25/5
One Dance with the Cowboy by Donna Alward 3.75/5
City of Glass by Cassandra Clare 2.5/5
City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare 2/5
City of Bones by Cassandra Clare 2/5
Her Secret Fling by Sarah Mayberry 4.25/5
Coming Undone by Lauren Dane 4.5/5
Wicked Enchantment by Anya Bast 4/5
Laid Bare by Lauren Dane 4.25/5
Archangel’s Kiss by Nalini Singh 4.25/5
Slow Heat by Jill Shalvis 4.5/5
Taking Chase by Lauren Dane (re-read) 3.75/5
Crux by Moira Rogers (re-read) 4/5

I read some pretty good books last month. I think my favorite reads of the month were Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake by Sarah Maclean and Coming Undone by Lauren Dane, with honorable mentions to Slow Heat by Jill Shalvis and Archangel’s Kiss by Nalini Singh. My worst reads of the month were the Mortal Instruments Series by Cassandra Clare. I plan to review them at some point but meh…not good.

This month I’m going to giveaway two books: Slow Heat and Coming Undone.

This month we’re giving away:

Ecstasy Unveiled by Larissa Ione
Lessons from a Scarlet Lady by Emma Wildes
Coming Undone by Lauren Dane
Slow Heat by Jill Shalvis

If you want to be entered to win, leave a comment on this post telling us what your favorite – and least favorite – reads of the month were. Also, be sure to tell us what book you’re interested in reading. You can put your name in for more than one book, but you’ll only be allowed to win one, so choose wisely.

So…what was your favorite read of the month? And your least favorite?

  1. Wow, you ladies read a lot!! I don’t think you guys were slackers!! I’m behind from last year but I’m still reading some every day. I’m really picky about what I read so I rarely read books that I don’t like. I did read an anthology, Tails of Love, and felt the novellas were too short. It seemed like there was a rush to end most of them. I read a lot of anthologies and usually enjoy them. I had so many favs this month!! The one I just finished was Hot And Bothered by Dianne Castell. I really liked it and even reviewed it for her on sites. I would want to win Holly’s books. Thanks, Sue

  3. My favorite read for January was Hold on Tight by Stephanie Tyler.
I didn’t really have a least favorite read.

Would love to win a copy of Coming Undone by Lauren Dane.

    Thanks!

  4. With all the snow in DC area, I have been snowbound and finally picke up the Demonica series. Had only the first in paperback but bought the next 2 in ebook, so my least favorite was Shade’s book, and the best book i read out of the three was Wraith’s book. And I would like to read Lore’s book, please!

  5. My top reads in Jan were The Demon’s Lexicon by Sarah Rees Brennan (YA), Camp Hell by Jordan Castillo Price, The Fellowship of the Ring by JRR Tolkien, and (re-read) Sunshine by Robin McKinley.

Jan wasn’t as big a reading month as usual. (12 books read.) I think a lot was due to still recovering from the holidays.

Coming Undone looks like another winner by Lauren Dane. I’d have to go for that!

  6. Hi. My favorite reads of January were:The Betrayal of the Blood Lily by Lauren Willig and Days of Gold by Jude Deveraux.

My worst read of last month was Swan’s Grace by Linda Francis Lee. I love her contemporary books but was seriously felt let down by her historical books.

Please enter me for Lessons From A Scarlet Lady by Emma Wildes. Thank you!

  7. January wasn’t a great reading month for me but I did read some good books and I would pick Waking the Dead by Kylie Brant as my favorite. I did enjoy her Mindhunter series. Please enter me to win Lessons from a Scarlet Lady or Coming Undone.

  8. My fav read in January was the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews and No Prince Charming by Shiloh Walker. Please enter me to win Coming Undone by Lauren Dane. Thanks!

  9. Omg – no need to include me in the drawing, one way or another I have/will have all these books.
🙂 As for favorite January reads… :X I got Lauren Dane’s early, otherwise it would’ve been a favorite read for sure. And definitely Slow Heat by Jill Shalvis.

I’m totally crossing my fingers and hoping for Gage’s book!!!

  12. My fave reads this month were “Tagged” by Mara Purnhagen and “Bride of the Wolf” by Susan Krinard.
Least fav: “The Mark” by Jen Nadol–dull, dull, dull.

I’d like to win Jill’s book!

fave: lessons from a scarlet lady
least: i liked all the books i read last month but if i have to choose one, a black tie affair

i’d love to read slow heat by jill shalvis.

  14. Amber E.

My favorite read of the month would have to be Robyn Carr’s “Angel’s Peak”. I really don’t have a least favorite read for this month. January wasn’t a really great reading month for me, one reason the weather kept me from traveling to our closest bookstore.

I would love a chance to win Emma Wildes “Lessons from a Scarlet Lady”.

  15. My fave last month were Catching Fire by Suzanne collins
and the least (it’s doesn’t mean that i don’t like it, it just i more prefer to finish Catching fire first then this book), The Widow’s season by Laura Brodie.

i would like to win Ecstasy Unveiled by Larissa Ione.

    thanks 🙂

  16. Natasha

Favorite read: Goddess of the Hunt – Tessa Dare

Least favorite (that’s not to say that the book was bad. It was just not as good as the others): Touching Lace – Anne Rainey

oh and I would LOVE to win Slow Heat by Jill Shalvis. Heard lots of good things about that book 🙂

  17. January was a busy month so I didn’t get around to reading as many as I wanted. No best stand out. But the worst read was definitely Midnight Resolutions by Kathleen O’Reilly. It was such a disappointment since I’ve read many of her previous books and they were great. This one was just awful.

I’d love to win Jill’s book or Lauren’s. Thanks!

  18. Favorite read of the month was Born of Ice by Sherrilyn Kenyon and the least favorite read was Passion Untamed by Pamela Palmer. I am also reading Percy Jackson that the Olympians series. LOVE IT. My juvenile book plug of the month.

I would love to read Larissa Ione.

I’d say my favorite was Briar Rose, an oldie historical by Kimberly Cates. Good redemption story. Least favorite would probably be A Lady of Persuasion – by no means the worst book I read, but certainly the most disappointing, because I had loved the previous book so much. I’ll put in for the Shalvis, because I’ve heard so much about her and never tried her. — willaful

  20. Ooh! Favorite read of the month was The Girls from Ames, a non-fiction by Jeffrey Zaslow. Least favorite was a holiday anthology from years ago–it didn’t age well, and I was soooo annoyed with the heroines that I actually exclaimed aloud about my irritation. My kids asked, “Then why are you still reading, Mommy?” An excellent question–it was a DNF…

    I’d love to win Jill’s, Lauren’s, or Larissa’s!

  21. I enjoyed everything I read last month. My favorite was Bound to Shadows by Keri Arthur. I didn’t have a least favorite.

I’d love to read Ecstasy Unveiled by Larissa Ione.

  22. Jane

My favorite read of the month was Julie Jame’s “Just the Sexiest Man Alive.” I would love to win Jill’s “Slow Heat.”

  23. I just was reading today’s comments and realized I didn’t pick 1 book. I was thinking one choice from 1 blogger. I would want Slow Heat, since Double Play was sooo good. Thanks, Sue

  24. Haven’t been able to read much this month, or the past month unfortunately XD But reads of this month for me would be Shiloh Walker’s ‘The Missing’ and ‘Quatrain’ by Sharon Shinn. Anne Aguirre’s ‘Grimspace’ was good, but not as good as I’d been lead to believe >.< I'll still keep reading though because I do like the characters. If Lady Luck be on my side I’d love Lessons From a Scarlet Lady 🙂

  25. Now that I participate to a challenge I keep track pf my readings which is good.
I read 21 books in january (which is a lot for me). My favorite was Ex-Mas by Kate Brian. Srah Mayberry’s Her Secret Fling is close behind though.
I’d love to win a copy of Slow Heat.
Thanks for the contest again ladies!

  26. My favorite read was Royal’s Bride by Kat Martin.
    I didn’t have a read that I didn’t enjoy.

I would love to have Coming Undone or Slow Heat.

  27. My favorite January read was The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. The least favourite was To Die For by Linda Howard.
I would love to win either Ecstasy Unveiled by Larissa Ione or Slow Heat by Jill Shalvis.

  28. Favorite read – THE MADNESS OF LORD IAN MACKENZIE by Jennifer Ashley

Least favorite – HONEY MOON (one of Susan Elizabeth Phillips’ older books)

Please toss my name in the hat for Jill Shalvis’ SLOW HEAT. Thanks!

  29. Chelsea B.

My favorite read of last month was The Darkest Pleasure by Gena Showalter. No book that I didn’t like 🙂

I would like to win any of them other then Ecstasy Unveiled. Just because I already have that one 🙂

  30. I’d love to read Lessons from a Scarlet Lady by Emma Wildes

Best read this month, have to be What happens in London by Julia Quinn, I had so much fun reading it. Worst, well I think that goes to Betrayed by PC Cast

  32. Wow what alot of books read last month!

My favorite books was “Love You to Death” by Shannon K. Butcher, “Sleep No More” by Susan Crandall and “A Different Light” by Mariah Stewart.

I would like to win Archangel’s Kiss by Nalini Singh

  37. My fave read this month was Ecstasy Unveiled by Larissa Ione, just finished it this afternoon. My least fave read do not have one as enjoy everything that have bought or been given to read or would not read the books at all. I also do not think you ladies are reading slackers the lists are awesome, my reading has slowed down in past year due to other obligations getting in the way and I am jealous!
I would choose either : Coming Undone by Lauren Dane or Slow Heat by Jill Shalvis as have not read either one of these authors and both books appeal to my reading tastes.

  38. Wow, favorite? That’s a tough one. Lots of good books out there. I would have to say Christy Reece’s newest book NO CHANCE.
Least favorite? Probably Deadly Seduction by Cate Noble. I think it just disappointed me that it wasn’t as good as the first in the series.
I already have Lauren Dane and Larissa Ione’s books. I’d love to win Jill Shalvis’s Slow Heat.
