Let’s Talk About That First Kiss….

Everyone remembers their first kiss, right? I remember mine like it happened last night. It was Halloween night of ’97 after the big football game at school. I was dating one of the football players and we were going to the Santa Monica Pier with a bunch of friends after the game and I was so nervous.

I knew Devin was going to try to kiss me, we had been together for almost a week and up until that night, all we ever did was talk on the phone at all hours of the night and hold hands at school in between classes and during lunch. He had kissed me on my cheek and on my hand but we had never kissed and I knew that night, things were going to change.

I couldn’t wait.

The anticipation was good enough to kill me. I was so anxious to get our first kiss over and done with because patience has never been one of my virtues and when the moment finally came, I was so nervous, I bumped my nose against his when he leaned down to give me a kiss and he ended up laughing all the while he was kissing me.

It’s those kinds of first kisses that I absolutely love. I am super thankful that my first kiss was with Devin of North High because he kissed really good and I have a good first kiss memory but as sweet and cute as my first kiss was, my favorite first kiss moments took place in between the pages of some of my favorite books.

My all time favorite first kiss scene was the first between Mike and Sam in Sweet Liar by Jude Deveraux. I know, I know, everyone is shocked considering how much I hate Jude Deveraux’s books but really, that first kiss between Mike and Sam was hawt! I mean, that wall banger of a kiss is one of the first kisses that has always stayed with me, it’s made an impression on me which is why it’s my favorite. What surprises me more is I like the soft, romantic kisses that is sparking with chemistry and connection but this wall banger kiss is the one that I remember and the one that I get excited to talk about.

So let’s talk about that first kiss…who’s first kiss in the books we read is your favorite and why? Also, do you prefer the first kiss between the hero and heroine to be soft and sweet or rough and hard? Why?

Let’s get the discussion ball rolling, shall we?

I love love LOVE the kiss between Cal and Min on the picnic table in Bet Me. I think that one’s my all-time favorite. Sooo sweet and sexy.

As far as gentle or rough, it depends on the couple. I really love the nervous, tentative touches, but sometimes the chemistry between two characters is so explosive a sweet kiss just won’t do. In that case, let ’em get rowdy. 🙂

  2. My very favorite first kisses are the ones (like the one you had, it sounds like 🙂 that are awkward but still manage to be really GREAT, because the characters are so into each other.

I am having trouble thinking of good book examples, even though I KNOW I’ve read lots (I think the first kiss in Faking It might be one), but there’s a great TV example in a Canadian show called Twitch City. A socially awkward, TV-obsessed agoraphobe and a pretty, insecure girl are rooming together. In one episode, she tries to convince him to go outside, telling him there’s a whole world out there, and he can do anything!

CURTIS: Well, there is one thing I’d like to try.

He reaches out and squeezes her breast. It’s the most awkward, vaguely creepy thing he could possibly do.

HOPE: That’s what you wanted to try?
CURTIS: I just wanted to see if it was possible.
    HOPE: Anything’s possible, Curtis.

And then she kisses him, and then they’re making out like crazy things, and I love it because it’s ridiculous and weird and really, really shouldn’t be hot or sweet or anything else and yet it IS. It works and it looks like a really great kiss and I ended up really rooting for them as a couple even though I never, ever expected to.

The director/writer/guy who plays Curtis even says on the commentary track that this kiss and the sex scene that follows it was supposed to be awkward and awful but it came out really hot anyway. And I love that, how sometimes when it’s right nothing can get in the way of that.

  3. Oh, great topic, Rowena!

I can totally picture the exact spot I had my first kiss with my first boyfriend. It was at my high school, and I was 15–a month away from 16, and convinced I was ridiculously old to be having my first kiss. Now, I think about what a baby I was!

As for the books, the one that comes to mind is between Tamara and Elec in Flat Out Sexy. Their chemistry is so explosive, and there are some near misses leading up to it. When they finally do kiss . . . ::fans self::

    JenB,

That’s right. Cal and Min did indeed have a very steamy first kiss. Super sweet too!

You’re right. It really does depend on the couple, some couples can really sell the soft and sweet kisses whereas other couples are more fit for the rough and randy first kisses.

    Rose,

Wow, that does sound like it would be hot…I’m mighty intrigued to check it out. It’s on a Canadian TV Show? I’m gonna try to find that on netflix.

    Renee,

I was thinking the same thing when I finally had my first kiss! And now, my niece is 16 and I don’t think she should be kissing anyone! LOL.

As for the book first kiss, that series is on my TBR list and well, you’ve just put it on my radar so thanks!
