Mid-Year Reflections

Am I the only one that can’t believe it’s already June? Christmas is right around the corner. Again.

We’ve already picked your brains in March about the best books. Now I want to know if that has changed. I’m nosy like that.

Reflecting back on what I’ve read this year so far, I realized that I’ve read some damn good books. I would have to say that the best book I’ve read this year is Blood Magic by Jennifer Lyon. It just rocked.

I have to give honorable mentions to Angels’ Blood by Nalini Singh and Untamed by Pamela Clare. There are more I could mention, but I don’t want to be too wishy-washy.

So what I want to know is what is the best book you’ve read this year? And b/c I’m already asking that, are there any new authors you discovered that are just amazing?

  1. My favorite book I’ve read so far this year is Ann Aguirre’s Grimspace, hands down. I was not familiar with her work before this year, but I’m totally a fangirl now.

  2. I am delighted to discover Erin McCarthy’s HARD AND FAST this year and will probably go on a glom of this author for the rest of the year.

I was lucky to read an ARC of one of Tessa Dare’s upcoming books this summer and I will be SHOCKED if she wont be my pick for Best Debut Author at the end of the year.

Best book of the year so far for me is SCANDAL by Carolyn Jewel.

  3. Willa

Ooh – lloved Larissa Ione’s Passion Unleashed and Desire Unchained. Fab!

Also loved Jennifer Ashley’s The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie *sigh*

  4. Luci

I loved Erin mcCarthy’s Hard and Fast but I am definitely over the moon at having discovered Pamela Clare and devoured all her books but her historical romances are just fabulous. Loved Ride The Fire, Surrender and Untamed.

Going to have to go with Susan K Butcher’s Burning Alive and a second vote for PC’s Untamed. I am also putting forth Julia Spencer-Fleming’s Clair Ferguson Mysteries. I have read In the Bleak Mid-Winter and A Fountain Filled with Blood and really enjoyed them both. Although they are mysteries, there is that spark of attraction for Clair and Russ, the local sheriff, that cannot be overlooked and keeps me tuned in.

Dark Fantasy: ‘Darkborn’ by Alison Sinclair

Ladlit (i.e. chicklit-type voice but written by men): ‘Long Way Down’ by Nick Hornby

Literary Fiction: ‘Book of Negroes’ by Lawrence Hill

Historical Romance: ‘What a Scoundrel Wants’ by Carrie Lofty

Just started ‘Compromised’ by Kate Noble and it’s shaping up really well, also!

  7. I discovered Carolyn Jewel and Patricia Briggs this year. I’ve been looking for more books by both of them. I love discovering new authors.

  8. Lori

    Hmmmm….

Contemp? Toss up between Just the Sexiest Man Alive and Practice Makes Perfect. Julie James was my best new find this year.

Historical? A Hint of Wicked. Definitely. I’m heartbroken that Jen didn’t love it.

  9. I’d have to say that Smooth Talking Stranger by Lisa Kleypas and The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie were tied for the best book I’ve read so far this year. Both wonderful – both very different from each other.

Julie James is my fav author so far this year.

  10. Moira, I’ve said this before, but I have to say it again. Even with my aversion to 1st persion, I might have to pick up Grimspace. I’ve heard SO many good things about it.

Seton, I loved Scandal. Best historical of the year (right there along with Meredith Duran).

Willa, I just bought the Jennifer Ashley book yesterday. At the grocery store, no less. LOL

Luci, aren’t her historicals amazing? I can’t wait until the next book.

KeriM, I’m glad you enjoyed Burning Alive. That series definitely has potential.

    M, is Darkborn a romance?

Rosie, is Patricia Briggs the sci-fi romance author?

Lori, I still have to read Practice Makes Perfect. ::sigh::

Tracy, Julie James is def. becoming popular. She’s so good, the lack of sex in JTSMA didn’t even bother me. LOL

Hands down to Angel’s Blood by Nalini Singh. After reading the book, I went out and bought out her backlist — new — the very next day and I never do that. When I glom an author’s back list, whether big or small, I try to go for used first and I didn’t even hesitate with her books.

  12. I really enjoyed Francesca Prescott’s Mucho Caliente! I just kept laughing.
Also great was Blue Diablo by Ann Aguirre, and I have another book by her now so that will be fun
