What Does It Say About Me?

Lately, I’ve found myself reading more and more blogs belonging to 14-17 year old bloggers who are reading the books that I want to read. Books that are more appropriate for a younger audience but I can’t seem to give a shit because I want to read books like: How NOT to be Popular by Jennifer Ziegler and Popular Vote by Micol Ostow and Enthusiasm by Polly Shulman and other tweeny bopper books.

I share a love of these kinds of books with my niece Chaylene and I guess because we’re into the same kinds of books (she’s dying to read Twilight but my sister and I think it’s too mature for her young eyes) it’s got me on the look out for more Young Adult/Teen books out there.

My daughter Brenna has just started the Fablehaven series by Brandon Mull and she is loving them. It’s funny because she had a fierce crush a few years ago on the boy that one of the characters in the series is named after, Tanu.

You see, Tanu is my friend David’s little brother and they are both cousins to the author of the books, Brandon Mull. He’s a few years older than Brenna and we used to go to visit David and his family every year in Utah for a few days and we would stay at Tanu’s house. Brenna LOVED it. She developed a crush on Tanu while we were all bowling one year and even though she’s totally embarrassed to admit it, a mother knows who her daughter has crushes on.

Anyway, I’m 28. I just turned 28 and I find myself browsing the Young Adult and Teen section of the bookstore BEFORE I head over to the romance section. I wish I could say that I’m browsing that section because I want to check out some books for my more age appropriate niece Chaylene and for Brenna but who the heck am I kidding, I’m browsing for ME. I’m almost embarrassed to ask but seriously, what does this say about me?

  1. That you’re a cool mom who isn’t afraid to read whatever makes her happy.

In fact, I think you were the one who got me started on reading tweeny books (e.g. Meg Cabot) and most of them are fun to read. Sometimes it’s good to read about the innocent type of romance and emotions, to give us a break from all the adult sex stuff.

Plus I think it’s good to know what our kids are reading these days.

Awwwwww you’re my favorite Daphne. My brother told me that I have unresolved issues from high school that makes me read these books, LOL. I swear he’s a jerk. And yes it’s Pete.

Yeah, Brenna is turning into the little reader so I’m glad that she’ll have books to read in the coming months. Meg Cabot is a favorite of hers and it’s funny because she’s a favorite of mine too. Brenna’s reading the Allie Finkle books and loving them and I just finished reading Mia Thermopolis’ book Ransom My Heart, it was too cute.

What about you? What are you reading? Anything since Acheron? haha.

  3. I agree with the girls, it says you’re a great mom/aunt. And there are some great YA books out there, so it’s not surprising you’d latch on to that. 🙂
