The war between good and evil

Jake Macgregor has his hands full. As San Francisco’s leader of the Paranormal Special Forces unit, he and his team are facing a powerful enemy that threatens to bring down the city. With the weight of the world already resting on his broad, chiseled shoulders, the last thing Jake has time for is romance. So why—after a long, hard day’s fight against evil—are his nights filled with dreams of Cassia?

Is about to get a whole lot hotter…

Cassia is a D’Anu witch whose birthright ensures power and honor beyond her imagination. It also forbids the one thing Cassia wants the most: the love of mortal Jake Macgregor. When she intervenes in a skirmish to save his life, the consequences are inescapable—even though the magic they make together is too luscious, and potent, to resist…

It’s always been hard for me to review books that I really love. I just can’t seem to articulate my thoughts well enough to get across how much I loved the book. That is exactly the case here, so bear with me.

This paranormal series is probably one of my favorite paranormal series out right now. There are no vampires or shapeshifters. Just witches, the Fae, Elves (Dark and Light), and demons. Since I read the first book, Forbidden Magic, I’ve been intrigued by the world that McCray has created.

Cassia has always been a mystery. As a D’Anu witch, she always seemed more powerful that she was supposed to be. No one really knows exactly who Cassia is. What they do know is that she’s an intricate part of their fight against Darkwolf, the warlock that is trying to take over San Francisco. Jake Macgregor has always been drawn to Cassia, but he stays as far away from her as possible. Jake has had nothing but bad luck when it comes to magic and the last thing he wants is to get involved with a magical witch.

Cassia knows that her last quest in the San Francisco Otherworld is to help the D’Anu coven defeat Darkwolf. What Cassia doesn’t count on is that she’s unable to stay away from Jake. The problem is that Cassia has a destiny to fulfill that does not include a human male. I don’t want to get too much into spoilers. I was surprised at who Cassia really was. So no spoilers about that. For those who haven’t figured it out, I think the surprise definitely makes the book better.

There is a lot going on in this book, but it doesn’t take away from the story of Jake and Cassia. The two of them seem like such an unlikely couple, it makes their story even more powerful. Cassia tends to be a very serious person. Her destiny sits heavily on her shoulders. Jake brings humor, which is much needed. Jake’s outlook on life, even in the midst of San Francisco being taken over by a warlock, makes Cassia take herself less serious.

This book is my favorite in the series.

4.75 out of 5.

  1. I haven’t read these, but I’m pretty sure I have it in the review queue. I was thinking of moving it up, and your review has just about convinced me.

    Will I be lost?

  2. Oh devon, you are missing a wonderful series. Me, I’m a bookacholic and always read books in order, so I’m not good to anser that but they will here. I’m jealous tho because I don’t have the new one yet, pout. LOL

Great review Casee. I’ve heard a lot about this series. I checked out Ms. McCray’s website and read some excerpts, they were HOT!

I wasn’t sure whether or not to start this series, (I already have more than I can keep straight), but your review has pushed me over the edge. I can’t wait to add these to my TBR. Thanks!

  4. Lorraine, definitely start this series! It’s different from other paranormal series out there right now which is why I love it so much.

Devon, yay! I look forward to reading your reviews. 🙂

Dina, read them. You won’t regret it. 😉

Karin, I’m glad my review wasn’t as bad as I thought. LOL
