Hero: Miles Redmond
Heroine: Cynthia Brightly
Grade: 4.5 out of 5
Now or Never. . .
It’s the last chance for Cynthia Brightly, the ton’s most bewitching belle. Driven out of London by a secret scandal, she must find a grand husband at the Redmonds’ house party before word of her downfall spreads all over England. Unfortunately, someone at Pennyroyal Green is already privy to the whispers of broken engagements and dueling lovers: Miles Redmond, renowned explorer and—thanks to his brother’s disappearance—heir to the family’s enormous fortune.
Miles set his sights on Cynthia once, at a time when the ambitious beauty thought herself too good for a second son. But now he’s heir apparent, relishing his control. He strikes a bargain with her: he’ll keep Cynthia’s steamy secrets and help her find a husband among the guests—in exchange for a single kiss.
What could be the harm in a simple kiss? Cynthia is about to discover that it’s enough to unleash fierce passion—and that Miles Redmond is most certainly like no other lover in the world.
I had a party the other day at my house.
I spent most of the party hiding out upstairs, trying to read this book in peace. I couldn’t help it, this book was good. I’ve never read anything by Julie Anne Long before so after reading all the nice comments on her writing around the web, I was amped up to try this one out and I’m glad that I did.
The woman can write the heck out of a story and her dialogue is off the chains. I ate up all of the scenes between Cynthia and Miles. I loved all of them, even when I was frustrated with them and I just thought they were perfect for each other. The story flowed extremely well, it was easy to follow along with and it was easy to fall in love with these characters. I really enjoyed getting to know Miles and I really liked Cynthia’s character and I enjoyed reading her grow through the obstacles she had to overcome in her life. I loved how Miles helped her realize that though her life wasn’t easy, that didn’t give her the right to treat others the way she did. I loved how Miles wasn’t perfect and he was okay with that and I loved watching how Cynthia was his perfect match because she understood the kind of person that Miles was and didn’t want him to change. She fell in love with the man that he was, warts and all.
My only complaint is that there was so many games being played between these two that it got really tiring. There were so many times throughout this book that I thought, alright, get over yourselves and find that way to be with each other. Everytime they had their “moments” and then went off and pretended it didn’t happen and busied themselves with everyone else all the while thinking about each other, drove me slowly insane.
But…it only made the coming together of these two all the more better for me in the end.
The storyline moved at a great pace and it kept me alert and wanting to keep turning the pages. I loved the way that Julie Anne Long painted this story with a vibrant voice that had me reading each and every word in the book and not skimming anything. I read each and every word and JAL has a way of writing scenes that I can picture perfectly in my mind. She has a way of making me feel what the characters feel, see the flowers in the garden and a way of making me see the interactions between the characters as if they were happening right before my eyes. It was great to feel apart of the story as oppose to seeing the story come to life from afar.
This book was a great read for me and I will definitely be checking out more from Julie Anne Long, this book has definitely made me curious of how much I will like JAL’s other books. I can hardly wait to start reading them!
Should you read this book? Heck yeah, this book is definitely binge worthy!
This book is available from Avon. You can buy it here or here in e-format.
I’ve never read anything by JAL but I ordered this one and the 1st book in the series and am just waiting for it to get here. Can’t wait. Your review makes me impatient for it now!
I cant wait for this one. I have it on order and should get it by Monday. Her books get better and better. My favorites (so far) are ‘Perils of Pleasure’ and ‘To Love A Thief’, but they are all good.
I read the first book in the Pennyroyal Green series and can’t wait to read Like No Other Lover.

I read Ms Long’s The Perils of Pleasure back in April, and really liked it.
Must get more of her books for sure.
