Guest Author: Meljean Brook – Q&A Part 2

Meljean was kind enough to answer some off the wall questions. Thanks Meljean!

  1. If you could go back and read ONE book for the very first time again, which would you choose and why?

THE GRAPES OF WRATH by John Steinbeck. I can’t explain the emotional effect that book had on me as I was reading it. It STILL kicks me right in the gut, but if I could have the discovery of that emotional reaction
again, I’d take it.

  1. What hero of yours would you want with you if you were stranded on a deserted island?

Drifter. He has wings, and could fly us off the island.

  1. What was the first thing that popped into your head when you saw your very own book on the bookshelves of Borders/Barnes and Nobles?

Holy shit. It’s really real!

  1. What are your top 3 all time favorite books?

THE LAST UNICORN by Peter S. Beagle

THE GRAPES OF WRATH by John Steinbeck

NO GREATER LOVE by Katherine Kingsley (this isn’t actually at the top of my favorite all-time books, but this is my favorite romance novel.)

  1. If the whole world was listening, what would you say?

“Buy my books.”

Ha ha. No, I’d just say: Dudes, try to be kind to and respectful of one another. It’s not THAT hard. And buy my books.

  1. You’re on death row, what are you going to order for your last meal?

A shovel, and I’d dig my way out, a la SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION. Never give up! Either that or pad thai from my favorite Thai restaurant.

  1. Dark hair or light?

Whatever the current hero or heroine I’m writing has — both have dark.

  1. Dark eyes or light?

Ditto as above, but they both have blue.

  1. Long hair or clean cut?

CLEAN CUT IF IT’S A HERO!!!

Either if it’s a heroine.

And here’s a secret: all of my heroines will have great hair. It’s the one thing of myself that I add in — not because I have great hair, but because I wish I did. cries

  1. What are your thoughts on the writers strike?

Pay them what they deserve. They aren’t asking the studios to go broke, for god’s sake. It’d be like Penguin asking me to not take royalties on any e-books sold. It’s ridiculous.

  1. What shows do you miss because of the writer’s strike?

I don’t watch TV, actually. It’s all Dora, all the time. I only catch up on DVD later.

  1. What’s playing on your ipod right now?

Creedence Clearwater — there’s a lot of it on my DEMON BOUND soundtrack, and right now, it’s “Fortunate Son”.

Don’t forget, Demon Night is available!! Download it in eBook format here and here, or buy it in paperback here and here.

It’s not anywhere near as subtle as they probably thought it was, but still, it made me smile.

And I confess to liking the guy 😉

  2. azteclady

Okay, since it’s Dora all the time at your house… have you reached her parents yet?

    *cheeky grin*

Or your could share if there are any series out in DVD (or to be released in DVD) that you want to watch.

LOST, Prison Break, 25, House, Criminal Minds, Buffy? Bueller?

  3. LOST, Prison Break, Heroes, House (I already have Buffy) the one with Larry David that I’m blanking on the name, Battlestar Galactica (sob), Supernatural, Deadwood. I want to check out Moonlight, because I’ve heard it has such terrible dialog, and I’m a fan of cheesy dialog.

I have been watching the new Terminator series, but only because they replay the episodes online. So I can watch them anytime (usually when I desperately need a break.)

  4. azteclady

How far on LOST have you gotten, if anywhere?

    Any theories? Favorite character? (and/or actor) {I’m a Lostaway myself}

  5. azteclady

    Dude!

Oh I love Hurley too! “I’m spry!” has been a favorite quote since the first season *grin*

Oh, and who can forget, “Our lives suck, man!”

  6. Nope, the first season of LOST is still sitting in its little plastic wrapper 🙁 I’m waiting for a really good break so that I can just suck it all in.

I have read some spoilers, though, from the end of last season. Which is why I finally broke down and bought the first season 😀

  7. I never watch any TV really. So I don’t know any of those new shows!

I put comment/question on your other post, so i’m backwards. But I asked how you celebrate your release days?

Love this interview and your humor!

  8. Have to laugh about Dora. I’m past that point but it was Thomas the Tank Engine for TV shows and watching 101 Dalmatians for one kidlet and Dumbo for the next. I can repeat lines of those movies even now.

    Loved your interview.

  9. Hi Caffey!

Well, this time, I’m kind of under deadline (book due at the end of the month) so mostly, I wrote and wrote. I did go out to a couple of bookstores to check the shelves and to see if I could sign stock — so it was a working celebration 🙂

I ordered my mocha with whipped cream, too. That was oh-so-yummy.

  10. Ann! I must have posted right past you 🙂

Oh, dear — Thomas the Tank Engine is on pbskids’ Good Night show. I know him well, unfortunately.

My daughter loves My Little Pony and CareBears. I’d bought them because of my nostalgia, but I didn’t realize how AWFUL they were. Of course, now I’m paying for it, because she’s hooked on them.

She hasn’t caught on to Disney films yet — which is a frustration for me (because I love them) and a relief (because I don’t know if my love would survive 100 watchings per year.)

…now I’m just biding my time until she can watch Batman and Superman movies. Or The Princess Bride. Or, Willow, or the Neverending Story. I can never tire of those.

  11. Barney doesn’t freak me out as much as those weird, automaton kids he’s got in the show with them. They all do that stiff-armed, knee-bouncing dance and are always bobbing their heads.

    It’s FREAKY!

  12. I am proud to admit when I go to the gym and run on the treadmill I watch Spongebob and Fairly Odd Parents 🙂

Ah the good old Princes Bride. “Wuv truw wuv” I WANTED TO BE BUTTERCUP so bad!

Barney the big purple blob reminds me of Grimace from McDonalds. Maybe that is why I can’t eat there?

  13. azteclady

I live in the wrong time zone.

    Srsly.

My kids loved The Sound of Music–which was fine by me, since I knew the dialogue and songs by heart from *my* childhood *grin*–and then The Princess Bride.

To this day the kidlets and I can talk in movie dialogue–fun times.

  14. Meljean, have to check out your (top) reading recs. And I wish I could get a hold of your Demon soundtracks. Maybe you could list the playlist on your site/primer..?
