Errol MacRae’s days of gallivanting across the Highlands are nearing an end. His father’s health has taken a turn for the worse, and rumors are swirling that the crown intends to transfer ancient lands into the hands of the MacKenzies, the clan the MacRaes are sworn to defend. Errol expects to lead his men into battle soon. So he isn’t pleased when his father instead sends him to retrieve a beautiful flame-haired lass who has fled into the mountains.
Orphaned as a young girl, Aileana vividly remembers how the MacRaes rescued her and welcomed her into their clan. For ten years, she has served them loyally—until the night she’s nearly despoiled by one of the laird’s captains. Aileana risks her life and her reputation to seek refuge in the snowcapped peaks of the Five Sisters, the one place that has always felt like home. But after the strong-armed, strong-willed Errol tracks her down in a blizzard, she finds herself tempted to risk something even more dangerous: her heart.
Aileana was found in the forest when she was about 10 years old and was taken in by the MacRae clan. She works in the kitchen and is teased relentlessly by some of the other staff. The MacRae, however, really likes her. She is also relentlessly pursued by one of the guards and when he corners her one too many times she takes off. The MacRae sends his son Errol to find her.
Errol believes he would be better served by joining the hunt but his father has sent him on this task and he wants to complete it. He loves his father and doesn’t want to disappoint him. He ends up finding Aileana in a cave with a seer, Sgùrr, who has taken her in. Errol and Aileana become closer as they return the MacRae homestead and Errol gets quite upset when he finds out the guard is asking the MacRae for Aileana’s hand in marriage. He ends up claiming her for himself but when he finds out who she really is she’s not sure that he’ll still want her.
I have to admit that I wasn’t too enamored by Errol when the book first started. He kind of seemed like a self-centered ass and I was kind of shocked to learn that he was the hero in the book. He did grow on me a bit as the book went on and I ended up liking Aileana and Errol together
The story of her background was odd and I couldn’t quite figure out what point of it all was. It added pages but the author could just’ve easily stayed an orphan all through the book and it still would have had the same outcome. Overall a decent read but could have been a lot shorter imho and still been good.
