Q & A with Nelle Davy and The Legacy of Eden Giveaway

Please welcome Nelle Davy to the blog whose first book, The Legacy of Eden, released on January 31, 2012.

Describe your latest book in 15 words or fewer.

It’s a reworking of I Claudius set in a farm in Iowa.

What inspired you to write THE LEGACY OF EDEN?

I Claudius – I wanted to take the kernel of the idea from the novel (ambition and its devastating effects on a family headed by an amoral matriarch) and move it into a modern setting.

Which part of THE LEGACY OF EDEN was the most enjoyable to write?

The part where Cal announces their affair and Lavinia threatens to stab him in his sleep if he ever hits her again at the traffic lights once they leave to go to the farm. That cemented everything for me about the kind of person she was.

Which part was the least enjoyable?

The end rape scene and Meredith’s reaction. I had to do it in a way that was unforgivable without making the audience hate her and also understand why she reacted the way she did. Not a pleasant moment.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in the book?

I am sure in time I will think that. But I believe firmly it was the only kind of book I could have written when I did (which was from the ages of 24-25). Maybe when I am in my thirties and look back I will have developed enough as a writer to answer this question but right now I am in my twenties and too inexperienced for that kind of retrospective.

Giveaway: I have 1 copy of The Legacy of Eden to give away (fyi – this is an ARC and is an uncorrected copy) to one lucky commenter.  Leave a comment on this post along with your email address no later than 7:00pm on to enter.  Open to anyone US or Intl.

For generations, Aurelia was the crowning glory of more than three thousand acres of Iowa farmland and golden cornfields. The estate was a monument to matriarch Lavinia Hathaway’s dream to elevate the family name – no matter what relative or stranger she had to destroy in the process. It was a desperation that wrought the downfall of the Hathaways – and the once prosperous farm.

Now the last inhabitant of the decaying old home has died – alone. None of the surviving members of the Hathaway family want anything to do with the farm, the land, or the memories.

Especially Meredith Pincetti. Now living in New York City, for seventeen years Lavinia’s youngest grandchild has tried to forget everything about her family and her past. But with the receipt of a pleading letter, Meredith is again thrust into conflict with the legacy that destroyed her family’s once-great name. Back at Aurelia, Meredith must confront the rise and fall of the Hathaway family… and her own part in their mottled history.
