Judith’s review of One Perfect Night by Rachael Johns

Peppa Grant’s fellow employees may call their new CEO Mr. McSexy, but she’s also heard that he’s aloof and distant. Cameron McCormac certainly seems cold toward Christmas when she meets him at the company’s annual party…but he’s also the sexiest man Peppa has ever seen. And when he offers to forgive the damage she accidentally caused to his expensive car in exchange for accompanying him to his family’s holiday get-together, she agrees.

Cameron needs a date to the family party to get his matchmaking relatives off his back. Their chemistry is instant and undeniable, leading to an incredible one-night stand. But Peppa wants love and family, while Cameron’s only interested in temporary pleasure. When their relationship takes an unexpectedly serious turn, will he run the other way—or will he give love a second chance?

One of the first questions that came to mind when I was reading this story was “What’s this guy got against Christmas?”  It seemed obvious from the beginning that Mr. McSexy, the CEO whose reputation was a “playing the field” kind of guy, was a person who caved in to his family’s insistence that he be a part of their family Christmas observances with not a lot of grace.  He made little if any attempt to even pretend he was glad to be present.  Getting a date was a ploy to get his family off his back so that their efforts to move him beyond what was obviously a traumatic experience in his past wasn’t even a pleasant experience.  I didn’t get the impression that this was a man who experienced any joy in his life.

And then there was Peppa–Penelope to most people and Peppa to her closest friends–who was a woman whose fiance had hurt her deeply.  Not filled with a great deal of self-esteem, Peppa was shocked when the owner of a car she plowed into turned out to be her boss’s car–the infamous Mr. McSexy himself.  Her lack of auto insurance–her company has just gone belly up the day before the accident–put her at the mercy of a man who had plenty of money to fix his own car but saw her difficulty as an opportunity to coerce her into being his “pretend date” at his family’s Christmas bash.  I also had to wonder about a woman who continued to date a man whose immediate message was “get involved with me at your own risk–I’m don’t ever hang around for very long.”  Sure there was a powerful attraction there for both of them, but I think it was a testimony to the sorry state of things emotionally for both these people who were willing to try to calm their inner demons or fill those ever-present emotional holes with temporary romantic connections that meant little if anything.  The really sad part about the story?  It meant something to both of them but their past trauma clouded the issues.

This is NOT your usual “happily ever after” and Santa Claus Miracle kind of story.  There is genuine pain here, carried around in hearts that are numb  and hurting, accompanied by serious efforts to mask the pain with an “I don’t need anyone longterm” exterior.  It hurts to watch these two trying to find their way, not only to one another, but through the morass of hurt and disappointment within.  The writing was well done and the tension between these two didn’t seem to let up at any place in the story.  That can be wearing in some ways, but it is also a testimony to the quality of writing at kept the edge sharp and well-honed throughout.  In many ways this is truly a holiday tale but it is also very much a situation that could exist at any point in either one’s life or during any time period.  I thought it was very good and enjoyed reading it.

I give it a rating of 4 out of 5

Warning: This review contains spoilers

Penelope Grant is standing in the for the “entertainment” at the company Christmas party when she first meets the new boss. He has no idea that she works for him and he takes advantage of that and asks that she step in and play fake girlfriend to his family on Christmas Eve. Peppa (as she’s known to her friends) doesn’t quite understand Cameron’s stand-offish nature with his family as she thinks their charming but seeing them with them gives her another look into the man that everyone says is made of ice. One thing leads to another and they end up back at Peppa’s and have a great time together. Cameron however has no desire to stick around as he’s a one night stand kinda guy.

Peppa is hurt by Cameron’s attitude but she moves on…until they end up together again after Peppa helps him from another tight spot with his family. Cameron and Peppa end up starting a relationship and as much as either tells themselves that they’re not looking for love and they’re only in it for the sex and companionship, they each get completely emotionally involved. That is until Peppa comes up pregnant and Cameron pretty much kicks her to the curb. Sure, he’s got his reasons, but Peppa has her reasons for keeping the baby and she wants nothing to do with Cameron from that point forward.

When I first started this book I didn’t like Cameron AT ALL. He annoyed me and was basically what he was supposed to be portrayed as and that was a man who was just after fun, excitement, and sex when he wanted it. Even when he and Peppa spent their first night together I wanted them separated as I just didn’t like the man! I honestly thought about not finishing the book. But then I kept reading and I saw an actual person come out of the skin of the outside Cameron. He was a kind, loving, caring person who loved his family but was afraid of life. Sure he lived, but after 2 different tragedies in his life he had decided that he wasn’t going to love again – anyone – because whoever he loved died. I have to admit my heart broke a little bit for him during the course of the book.

Then there was Peppa’s back story which was a bit cruel in its reality as well. She’s been dumped by her man because there became a chance that she may not be able to conceive a child and he wasn’t about to wait around and possibly be disappointed. OMG what a bastard! Shows you (and Peppa) that he truly didn’t love her he just viewed her as a baby maker. Yuk – good riddance to him. But yet….we knew as the reader that he really did love Peppa so how would it all work out?

Cameron and Peppa together were quite cute. I loved that Cameron came to appreciate romantic comedy movies and that they talked so much. When Cameron found out about Peppa’s pregnancy and acted the fool I wanted to crawl through the ereader and beat the man. Seriously, what a jerk. But he did see the error of his ways and (I think) made up for it all in the end.

The story ended up being pretty good and I’m glad that I kept reading – it was worth it.

What I Read Last Week

Posted December 27, 2011 by Tracy in Features | 6 Comments

As I said yesterday…Merry Christmas.  I hope you all had a great day and got everything your little hearts desired.  I had a loud yet wonderful day with my family and we ate and played Fact or Crap and ate some more and opened gifts and laughed and it just showed me how much I love them. The girls were quite happy with their day as my oldest got the iPod nano she wanted and my youngest got a trampoline – both from Santa of course…among other things.

I was off today and thank heavens I was because it’s taken me all freakin day to recover from Saturday and Sunday. lol  Between getting everything ready and cleaning the house for guests I was exhausted! lol

I didn’t read much last week and mostly shorter books which I think is pretty normal for me for the week before Christmas but this is what I read:

Unshakeable Faith by Lisa Worrall was first.  I reviewed this last week.  It was the story of a bartender and the amnesiac he takes into his life and his heart then loses when the man recovers his memory.  The book was very good and I really liked it.  You can read my review here. 4 out of 5

Next up was One Wicked Night by Kelly Jamieson that I read for The Book Binge.  This had Tyler and his best friend and fuck buddy, Nick, returning to their home town for Tyler’s sister’s wedding.  They run into Kaelin who is considered a “very good girl” a moniker that Kaelin despises.  She initiates a threesome and falls for the men.  It was a good menage story but had some odd aspects to it as well.  I’ll let you know when my review posts. 3.75 out of 5

Apparently I was into reading books that began with One and ended with Night because my next read was One Perfect Night by Rachael Johns.  This was about a woman who ends up playing the part of a girlfriend to her bosses family so that they’ll stop bugging him about dating since he’s a widower.  The pair end up in bed but then their casual affair turns into so much more.  I really liked the book but the hero really bugged me at first.  It was the story of discovery for the man but it took so long it was a bit frustrating.  I really liked the heroine and wanted her to be happy so in the end it all worked out for me. lol 3.5 out of 5

The Cross of Love by Barbara Cartland was a free download from All Romance eBooks last year (I think) so I picked it up.  The story was about the vicar’s daughter who becomes the housekeeper for the local Earl after her father dies.  They fall in love but must defeat the evil man who is determined to marry his daughter to the Earl.  It was a cute, kind of cheesy read with a lot of melodrama but a short and quick. 3 out of 5

My Book Binge reviews that posted last week:
Holiday Kisses by Jaci Burton, Shannon Stacey, HelenKay Dimon and Alison Kent

Happy Reading and Happy Holidays!!
