Judith’s review of Persuading Prudence by Liz Cole

After their night of mistaken identity and passion, can Lord Ravensbrook convince frumpy spinster, Prudence Mayville that marriage is the best and most honorable option?

Frumpy Lady Prudence Mayville has harbored a tenure for the devilishly dashing Lord Ravensbrook since her days in the schoolroom. So when the sotted earl mistakes her room for his and her for his mistress, Prudence finds it impossible to resist a chance to experience his passionate lovemaking.
When Kolton, Lord Ravensbrook awakens naked in the wrong room and realizes what had occurred, he does the honorable thing and asks for Prudence’s hand in marriage. Kolton is stunned when she turns him down flat. Why on earth would a compromised spinster refuse the most eligible bachelor of the season? Humbled, Kolton tries to overcome her objections, but will he be successful in persuading Prudence?

Only in Regency England could a 26 year old woman be called a spinster and be considered “on the shelf” by those who managed England’s marriage mart. Having had only one season and spent party after party gracing the wall as an invisible person, Prudence has made her choice to wear frumpy clothes that are too big for her, wear her gorgeous hair in a severe, uncomplimentary style, keep her attentions to herself and spend her days visiting museums and reading books of note. She is an orphan but the daughter of a baron, so Lady Prudence is certainly accepted in the ton even though she has chosen to remain invisible and hidden. She is now living in the home of her second cousin, the Countess whose step-son is now the present Earl. She enjoys the Countess and her other cousin Amanda, married to a viscount and mother of a beautiful son. Their summer journey to Bath has taken a surprising turn: Amanda has reason to return early to London, leaving Prudence and the Earl to return together several days later. It was the night that Amanda was gone, Pru was sleeping peacefully and, for the first time ever, sleeping nude because of the summer heat, when the Earl–several “sheets to the wind”–enters her chamber, disrobes completely, climbs naked into her bed, and makes love to her, thinking she is his mistress. Boy he really was drunk!! Now what is a spinster to do? Exactly what Pru decided to do: go along and make a memory. The upshot? Pru is no longer a virgin, and the Earl is “caught on the point of his own petard–he realizes his fateful error, knows what he has done to Pru, determines to do right by her, and is given the “set-down” of his life.

This is where the tongue-in-cheek kind of humor that I love in Regency romances comes to the fore. Kolton, Lord Ravensbrook, is not to be thwarted and he begins to see an intelligent, thinking, strong-minded, clear-headed, witty woman behind the dowdy gowns and awful hairdo. Never thinking love is necessary, he nevertheless begins to realize that he wants to be very good friends with this woman and that they can make a very good marriage together, so he sets about to seduce her in the only way he knows how: continuing to compromise her to the degree that she will agree to his suit. Their experience in his hunting cabin is simply delightful–the witticisms, the verbal sparring, the hot loving, her awareness that this is indeed the man about whom she has cherished a secret crush all these years, his growing awareness of her inner beauty and his determination to get her to see herself as she really is–all this and more make this a compelling read that will hold the interest of just about any historical romance fan.

Prudence is indeed a caterpiller who becomes a butterfly, and the amazement of the ton as they become aware that this incomparable beauty was right there under their noses from the first is wonderful to experience. But there is evil afoot and just when it appears that Pru and Kolton are home free–their life is just about to begin in the best way possible, danger and evil do their worst and a crisis intervenes in their happiness. While this may seem like a classic Regency and perhaps it is, yet there is the sense that one is not just re-reading an old formula and all will be well. Ms Cole teases this situation out in such a way that the reader absolutely must read on in order to resolve the crisis. And, indeed, it is resolved but in unexpected ways that keep the narrative and story fresh and interesting. I don’t think historical romance readers will want to miss this book. It is one of those stories I was so pleased to have been given the chance to read. I think you will like it, too.

I give it a rating of 4.5 out of 5.

Guest Review: A Duke’s Desire by Liz Cole

Tracy’s review of A Duke’s Desire by Liz Cole

Anna Carrington is no longer a child, but a marriageable young woman who has loved the Duke of Fairmount for years. She has kept her love for him well hidden, sure that even if, by some miracle, he did return her feelings, his dedication to propriety would never allow him to marry his ward.

Jared St. James is known for his strict adherence to the rules of society and respectability, even though he finds himself lusting after Anna. Having struggled against his desire to his young ward, he decides the only way to right the situation is to marry her off, but will she accept the man he has chosen for her or stake claim to her innocence

When I started this book I wasn’t sure what to expect as I love historical romances but this one was so short – how could they possibly tell the story in so short a time? As you can see from the blurb the h/h have known each other for years as the woman is the Duke’s ward. He has been lusting after her since she came of age and has fallen in love with her to boot and she has been in love with him for years.

The Duke finally decides that Anna needs to be his wife and since the subject is burning in his mind he can’t help but seek her out the minute he returns to his estate – in the middle of the night. They talk and eventually one thing leads to another and she talks him into foregoing his honor and bedding her before they are married.

Anna is a complete innocent, has no idea what really happens between a man and a woman in bed and questions Jared about different body parts. She latches on to the baser names for genitals which inflames Jared’s passions. I had no problem with Anna speaking as if she’s bedded many men and she was quite free with her explorations but Jared was a crazy man in bed! lol He was wild, out of control and practically frenzied with Anna. While she loved his rambunctiousness it just didn’t sit right with me. I’m not sure if it was the overuse of exclamation points or what but while the sex was hot it just didn’t seem plausible. I know, it’s fiction, but would Anna really be that robust and open on her very first time? IDK – maybe, maybe not. Between Anna’s taking to sex like a duck to water and Jared’s talking to her unlike he’d ever talked to a whore (according to him) it didn’t work that well for me.  It seemed more like a contemporary than a historial read. In fact change the fact that Jared’s a duke and the style of their clothes and it could be.

I guess it all comes down to personal opinion and preferences and for me this one just was ok.

What I Read Last Week

Posted March 14, 2011 by Tracy in Features | 5 Comments

Good Morning!
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and a great week last week.
There were some horrible events that happened in the world last week. Japan and all of the tragedies there just hurt my heart.  Also, fellow blogger, Fatin, whose husband was killed this past week which is just so wrong. I will be keeping Japan and Fatin and her 4 children in my thoughts and prayers.
So what did I read this week?
I started off the week with the upcoming new release by Kristan Higgins called My One and Only. It was the story of a woman who meets her ex-husband after 12 years and finally admits to herself that she never stopped loving him. You can read my review here. 4 out of 5
One of my Tracy’s TBR Challenge reads for the week (yes, there was more than 1!) was The Perfect Waltz by Anne Gracie. This was the story of Sebastian who decides that he needs to take a wife and he has a specific type of woman in mind that can help him take care of his two young sisters. When his man finds a woman in London that fits the bill he heads off to court her. While there, however, he sees and eventually meets Hope Merridew and though he knows he should have nothing to do with her he can’t help the feelings that she stirs in him. It was a charming story and I loved seeing Sebastian and his sisters breaking free from their shells. A lovely romance. 4 out of 5
Next up was a book for The Book Binge called The Bottom Line by Shelley Munro. This was about Maggie who had picked up an erotic novel by mistake but was now completely obsesses with the thought of being spanked after having read about it in the book. She starts a friends with benefits relationship with one of her male friends but she’s not sure how to ask him to spank her. For Connor he started the FwB because he wants to be with Maggie for good and this was how he thought he could get his foot in the door. It was cute but I had some issues with it. I’ll let you know when my review posts so you’ll be able to read more of my thoughts. 3 out of 5
Another Tracy’s TBR Challenge read for the week was Captive Heart by Anne Kane. This was a short about a dragon shifter who finds his mate but his mate had been bound to an evil dragon shifter not that long ago and wanted nothing to do with dragons. I had some issues with the story. First Haydn was determined to bring Cassie over to his way of thinking – which he did…in 1 night. Not even 24 hours but A night – too fast for me. Maybe if she had just accepted the mate thing they hadn’t pulled out the “I love you’s” it might have been ok – but probably not. Then Cassie was a big woman, which I have no problem with except when it’s said over and over and over. We know, thank you. It was stated so many times I was starting to think of the woman as Big Mama. lol Not good. 2 out of 5
Next was another Book Binge read called A Duke’s Desire by Liz Cole. This was a historical short but it was more sex than story. And the man in the story was incredibly raunchy. Just not my thing. I’ll let you know when my review posts. 2 out of 5
Yet another Tracy’s TBR Challenge read was Country Boys: Wild Gay Erotica edited by Richard Labonté and oh my lordy was it good. I really liked all of the stories except 2 of them and even though were alright – just not my kind of stories. If you want to read some great man-loving about some country boys this is a great book to pick up. 4.5 out of 5
After that was a novella called A Lady’s Wish by Katharine Ashe. This is a lovely story about a couple who met one day at a fair but through different events never met again…until 9 years later. It’s a story that falls between books 1 and 2 of Ashe’s historical series Rogues of the Sea. I didn’t read book 1 but you don’t need to in order to read this one – total standalone. You can read my mini review here. 4.5 out of 5
And last on the list was my read for the monthly TBR Challenge After the Kiss by Suzanne Enoch. My review for this one will post on Wednesday so keep your eyes peeled. lol
My Book Binge reviews that posted this past week:
Happy Reading!
