Forged in steeleTracy’s review of Forged in Steele (KGI #7) by Maya Banks

Steele, a KGI team leader, is an enigma not even his team mates understand. His emotions are tightly locked down and nothing can break that icy exterior. Nothing except Maren Scofield, a doctor on a mission, a woman who has gotten under Steele’s skin and threatens to crack that unflappable cool he’s legendary for.

Steele is determined not to allow Maren past his carefully guarded defenses, but when she’s in danger, there’s no way he’ll allow anyone else to protect her. She’s hiding something. He’s sure of it. But he isn’t prepared for the shocking discovery her secrets reveal. Or how they will forever alter the course of his destiny. He has a decision to make. Hold tight and shut her out. Or take a chance on something more powerful than he’s ever faced. Love.

Maren Scofield is a doctor and a woman who has known Sam Kelly for many years. Because of this the KGI teams trust her and use her medical services. Maren knows Steele as a hard ass. He’s the strong silent type but oh so hot. Unfortunately he constantly looks at her like he just can’t wait to get away from her. On one trip to her clinic in Costa Rica Steele finally tells Maren that the reason he needed to get away from her was that he fantasized about her constantly and he wanted to keep things on a professional level. He’s decided, however, that professionalism is highly overrated and he wants her in bed…like, NOW. He says he wants to get her out of his system so this is a one time thing and then they’ll go their separate ways. Maren is a bit surprised by Steele but agrees as she’s hot for him too. Steele ends up being a wonderful lover and Maren is sad to see him go in the morning.

Steele doesn’t stay away long and soon returns to Maren which she is extremely pleased about. She believes she’s pregnant from their previous session but says nothing. When Steele has to leave on a mission Maren is kidnapped by a psycho who is obsessed with her and Steele stops at nothing to get her back. Luckily she has one man that works for the psycho that doesn’t want to see her harmed and helps her escape.

Steele takes Maren back to his house where she finally tells him about the pregnancy – which he’s shocked and thrilled at – and they make plans for the future. Unfortunately psycho man isn’t done with Maren and is soon back in her life making threats against the ones she loves.

I have to admit to being a little leery about reading this book. The last book in the series, Shades of Gray, was a DNF for me so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I finally decided as I’d like the previous books in the series that I should give it a go – I’m glad I did.

The story was both exciting in parts and not so exciting in parts. The sex, the kidnapping, the rescuing that occurs…that’s all exciting. Unfortunately the parts where Steele and Maren are in his home together after she escapes is just kind of stilted and on the verge of dull. I realize that this part was to help Steele and Maren get to know each other because frankly they really hadn’t gotten to know each other, except in bed, before her kidnapping. While I understood that was what that time was for it just slowed the story down too much for me and I really didn’t care for it.

Steele was a brute of a man with a soft gooey heart. He was majorly gentle when it came to Maren – almost ridiculously so at some parts – but it showed how much he cared for her and their unborn child. Maren was a tough cookie and was perfect for Steele, imho. She really was strong to put up with psycho man and even at the end when shit hit the fan her strength showed through.

Overall this was a good book that I enjoyed. The middle of the book was definitely slower than the rest but other parts mostly made up for that lack. If you’ve been reading the series you’ll definitely want to read Steele’s story as you’ll see a side of him you never saw before.

Guest Author (+ a Giveaway): Q&A with Maya Banks

Posted August 21, 2012 by Holly in Promotions | 12 Comments

Today Maya Banks‘ latest novella, Softly at Sunrise, releases in digital format. Fans of the KGI series will be pleased to hear this is a continuation of Ethan and Kelly’s story, from book one, The Darkest Hour.

We recently tracked Maya down and asked her a few questions about the series, and the novella.

Book Binge: For our readers that are new to this series, can you tell us a little bit about it? What can readers expect when picking it up to read?
Maya Banks: The KGI series is first and foremost about a tight knit, intensely loyal family. The Kellys. There are six brothers who all served in the military and the oldest brothers, Sam, Garrett and Donovan formed a private organization (KGI) in which they take top secret missions from the government as well as private sector jobs. Readers can expect highly emotional, action packed stories but the primary focus is and always will be the romance. But along with the romance between the primary characters, readers can expect a central theme to be family and family bonds.

BB: What was your inspiration for the Kelly family?
MB: I don’t know that I had a specific inspiration in that I looked at another family and thought okay this is what I want to write about. For me, the Kellys encapsulates what family is or should be all about. When writing them I merely envisioned what I would want the perfect family to be (in all their imperfections) and I created from there.

BB: Did you always plan to have the psychic aspect to the story arc or is that something you added later?
MB: From the start I had a very clear vision of Nathan’s story and his heroine, Shea. It was different but yet at the same time their story was no different than the others. The central theme was still family and loyalty and a hero and heroine willing to defy all odds to be together and to save each other. The two book arc that included Shea and Grace and their special abilities was definitely planned and was discussed very early on with my editor.

BB: Is there a set number of books you’ve planned to write?
MB: The series is fairly open ended. I know that I have set ideas for at least 11 books going in and I’m willing to play the rest by ear. I don’t want to have a never ending series that readers grow weary of but I’m happy to continue writing books about these characters for as long as I have excitement for their stories.

BB: Can you tell us a little insider’s scoop about your novella, Softly at Sunrise?
MB: Softly at Sunrise is a look into the lives of Ethan and Rachel Kelly, the hero and heroine from the very first KGI book, The Darkest Hour. I always knew that I’d write a follow up to their story because so much of their story was still unfinished. They endure a lot as a couple and individually, particularly Rachel, and so I wanted to give readers a glimpse of them a little further down the line so that they could be assured that Ethan and Rachel were happy and would “make it.”

Thanks Maya! We really appreciate you taking the time to answer our questions.

Check out the blurb for Softly at Sunrise.

Rachel Kelly has traveled a long, hard road in her journey back to her husband, Ethan, and the Kelly family. Now, as she and Ethan are poised to move into their new home, safe behind the walls of the Kelly compound, Rachel wonders if she’ll finally be free of the ghosts that have haunted her for so long and if she’ll step into the sun after a past steeped in darkness.

For print readers, this story will be included in the back of Maya’s January full-length release, Shades of Gray.  For more information about Maya and the KGI series, check out Maya’s her website.

Guest Review: Echoes at Dawn by Maya Banks

Tracy’s review of Echoes at Dawn (KGI #5) by Maya Banks.

Grace Peterson is desperate, in hiding, and on the run after escaping a shadowy group determined to exploit her extraordinary ability to heal others. Her only lifeline – an unerring telepathic ability she shares with her sister – has been severed, leaving her alone and vulnerable. And time is fast running out…

Enlisted to bring Grace home is Rio, relentless member of the KGI. He’s unprepared for his reaction to this wounded, damaged woman, and he’s fiercely determined to protect her from those who nearly destroyed her. In Rio, she finds a safe haven, and for the first time…hope. But the mission is far from over. The danger Grace has eluded is fast closing in. And now it’s pitching two lovers toward an unfamiliar horizon, with no place left to hide.

Grace Peterson has escaped her captors and is in the mountains trying to hide. She is in a very bad state both emotionally and physically and basically she wants to die. Rio, part of KGI, is in search of Grace and finds her right before others who are after her come on the scene. He manages to get her off the mountain in a pretty harrowing escape and manages to get her to his home in Belize where she can recover.

Rio has known since the first time that he saw Grace on a surveillance tape that she was the woman for him and would change his life. He volunteered to go after her and would not accept anything more than getting her to safety. When he does get her to his home he takes nothing but great care of her while hiding her from those who are looking for her and would do her harm. But Rio wants more from Grace than to just take care of her. He wants everything and he’ll not stop until he gets it.

Gordon Farnsworth is a very wealthy man and only cares for one thing in the world and that’s his daughter, Elizabeth. Elizabeth is dying and riddled with cancer. Gordon knows that Grace can take the cancer from Elizabeth’s body and make her well. He hires a black ops group, Titan, to bring Grace to him and will not take failure as an option.

Grace is almost dead when Rio finds her but she really dug down deep for the courage and strength to get herself off the mountain, with Rio’s help, and I had to admire her for her strength. Throughout the book she showed herself as someone who was strong and intelligent and I really liked her for the most part. What I didn’t really care for was the fact that she was almost desperate for a normal life – that in itself is wonderful and something she should try for. I think, however, in her desperation to find someone to love her for herself and not what she could do she latched on to Rio incredibly quickly and it for some reason just didn’t ring true to me.

Rio was a stand up guy. He was honorable and took care of his team members as well as those others around him he felt responsibility for. He just didn’t do it because he felt responsible though, he did it because he truly cared about them. I believed that he really loved Grace and knew that she was his but frankly it was just a tad creepy to me that he was SO incredibly possessive of her. I love a man who is possessive…to a point and Rio just kind of passed that point in my opinion. He was a great guy – just a little too over the top for my liking.

Secondary characters in this story mainly focused around Rio’s team and boy did I like them – Terrence and Diego being my favorites. I certainly hope that they get books of their own in this series because I loved them so much.

I was a little disappointed that we didn’t get to see more of the Kelly family in this book but they were there on the periphery and that was good.

There was a part that had to do with the little girl, Gordon Farnsworth’s daughter, in the end of the book that truly had me shaking my head in wonder over some decisions that were made about her well-being. I can’t get into it without giving you major spoilers but suffice it to say I didn’t quite agree with all the decisions that were made for her.

Echoes at Dawn was definitely a good book, I just didn’t feel it was on par with what I’ve read from the rest of the series. I will continue to read however because Banks always provides me with a decent romance.

Review: Whispers in the Dark by Maya Banks

Book CoverCasee‘s review of Whispers in the Dark (KGI series, Book 4) by Maya Banks.

She came to him at his lowest point. The voice of an angel, a whisper in the dark. She’s the only thing that gets Nathan Kelly through his captivity, the endless days of torture and the fear that he’ll never return to his family. With her help, he’s able to escape. But he isn’t truly free, because now she’s disappeared and he’s left with an all-consuming emptiness as he struggles to pick up the pieces of his life. Did he imagine his angel? Or is she out there, needing his help as he’d once needed hers?

Shea has been on the run from people who will stop at nothing to exploit her unique abilities. She never wanted to drag Nathan, who’d already suffered so much, into danger, but she doesn’t have a choice so she reaches out to him for help. Finally face-to-face after having already formed a soul-deep bond in hell, their emotional connection is even more powerful than their telepathic one. Nathan refuses to consider ever letting her go again, but she worries they can never have a life free of the dangers that dog her every step. He’ll protect her with his every breath, but can he convince her that they are meant to face these threats together?

Hezzzzzo, readers. I am back with my promised DNF review of Whispers in the Dark. Consider that your warning that this is not.a.good.review. If you would like to read a review completely different than mine, you can read Tracy’s review here. I’m going to read it when I’m done writing mine.

I’m going to start with a little ass kissing and say I lurve you, Maya Banks.

Ass kissing you ask? Moi? That’s my way of saying straight away that I still love this series. I consider this book a bump in the road. It’s one of those things that I am going to pretend never happened. Nathan? Nathan who?

Let me get right to it because this isn’t going to be an in depth review like Tracy’s. I’m simply going to state why I could not finish this book. There were two reasons. I can’t say if I could have finished it if there were only one of them. I just can’t tell you.

1. Shea is a fucking psychic. No, not psycho. She’s telepathic. She also has a sister who has magical powers. She can heal people physically. And Shea can act as a conduit between her sister and an injured person to heal them.

2. Nathan didn’t have the Kelly arrogance assiness that comes with, well, being a Kelly. He was too normal. Which is good in real life, but not in a book written by Maya Banks. God knows I tried to finish it, but I just didn’t care how it ended. I really didn’t. I didn’t care what happened to Shea or Nathan.

Throwing a telepath into the series isn’t as bad as oh, say, throwing time-travel in. Which is why I can just pretend it never happened. Still, I just don’t get it.

Tracy’s review of Whispers in the Dark (KGI Series #4) by Maya Banks

She came to him when he needed her the most

She came to him at his lowest point. The voice of an angel, a whisper in the dark. She’s the only thing that gets Nathan Kelly through his captivity, the endless days of torture and the fear that he’ll never return to his family. With her help, he’s able to escape. But he isn’t truly free, because now she’s disappeared and he’s left with an all-consuming emptiness as he struggles to pick up the pieces of his life. Did he imagine his angel? Or is she out there, needing his help as he’d once needed hers?

Now he rushes to save her before it’s too late

Shea has been on the run from people who will stop at nothing to exploit her unique abilities. She never wanted to drag Nathan, who’d already suffered so much, into danger, but she doesn’t have a choice so she reaches out to him for help. Finally face-to-face after having already formed a soul-deep bond in hell, their emotional connection is even more powerful than their telepathic one. Nathan refuses to consider ever letting her go again, but she worries they can never have a life free of the dangers that dog her every step. He’ll protect her with his every breath, but can he convince her that they are meant to face these threats together

Nathan is on a mission in Afghanistan when he is captured. He is tortured along with his teammates and is about to give up on life when he hears a voice in his head. Not only does he hear the voice but he feels his pain being taken away. He thinks he’s finally gone nuts but talks back to the voice. When the voice, a female who identifies herself as Shea, asks him for particulars so that she can attempt to email his brothers for a rescue attempt he thinks he’s giving information to his own cracked psyche. I mean, how can there be a voice in his head?

The woman is actually Shea Peterson and she’s a psychic who can take people’s pain away when she touches them only with Nathan she seems to be able to do that without even being in the same country. Shea manages to help Nathan get back home but then she leaves his mind trying to give him time to heal. The problem is that Nathan feels lost without the person he came to depend on and can’t seem to get back into the groove of things. When Shea telepathically contacts Nathan again with an SOS signal he leaves everything behind and goes to help her out. Eventually Nathan’s brothers are called in to help Shea get away from those people who would use her gift against her and treat her like a lab experiment.

I was a tad concerned when I first started this book and realized that there was a psychic or paranormal type element involved in the story. I like paranormal elements in a book but usually not when the story has been strictly non-paranormal up to that point. I decided to hang around after the first chapter and find out what was up. I’m really glad I did as the psychic element in this story seemed to work out and didn’t seem quite as unlikely as I thought it would be to start.

The story very much focused on the bond that Nathan and Shea had created with each other while Nathan was in captivity. It seemed to really seal them into a bond that neither could, nor wanted to break. The storyline was such that it told of Shea basically being a lab experiment of those who had shown true psychic ability so it just seemed more plausible in the end.

I like seeing Nathan and Shea work together to try to solve their outside issues but what I liked most is that there wasn’t really any angst between the two of them. It was nice to read a book where the hero and heroine just got along! (Nathan did get a bit on the sappy side from time to time which I could have done without but it all worked in the end.) Not the outside forces were against them completely but they worked through those as well. Though not all of the problems were taken care of it gave it enough of a flavor or completion that I thought they had a good chance for an HEA.

I can’t wait to see what happens next in the series.
