Journey to the Digital Darkside

Back in late 2009, I heard that Carina Press, a digital-first imprint of Harlequin, was looking for submissions. I was lucky enough to be accepted as one of their launch authors with my debut novel Allegra Fairweather: Paranormal Investigator.

Since I was going to be digitally published, I figured I’d better get a digital reading device. My first was a Kobo. I chose this brand for two reasons a) it was available in Australian shops, and b) I could download titles directly from Carina Press. At that time, despite owning a digital device, I still read mostly paper books. My Kobo was used for Carina Press titles only.

Fast forward to 2012. I updated to a Kindle Touch and fell in love with reading digitally. I love being able to obtain books that aren’t easily available in Australia. I love that these digital books cost less, which means I can buy lots more titles. I love that one touch turns a page.

My only problem with the Kindle is that the sides aren’t quite wide enough. Obviously, with a Touch device, you have to keep your fingers off the screen unless you want to turn a page. My restless fingers are always slipping onto the screen, particularly when I’m involved in a story. Still that’s something I can deal with. I have become very attached to my Kindle. I still sometimes read paper books, but my paper purchases are becoming less and less. I’m eagerly looking forward to the next generation of reading devices.

Janni Nell’s latest release Dance of Flames (an Allegra Fairweather novella) appears in the anthology Carina Press Presents: Editor’s Choice Volume II. (Available 4th June 2012) One lucky commenter will receive a digital copy of Dance of Flames.
