With the start of 2013 comes what I think may be my best book yet. Once in a while I find a story where the characters take off and write the book. With a young lawyer who thinks someone is trying to kill him and another couple building love from a childhood friendship, CHANCE OF A LIFETIME won’t let you put it down.

I wanted to write a deep love story about two people who had been friends in childhood and lost each other one night because of an attack. She was hurt and he felt guilty for not being there to help. When Emily Tomlinson sees Tannon Parker ten years later, they don’t know how to mend the fences to find one another again. I wanted to write a very tender love story about an attraction far deeper than physical, a love that went all the way to their hearts.

While they are getting to know one another, they’re also dealing with problems in the library that she runs. The place is suddenly infested with want-to-be writers meeting upstairs.

If you are looking for a book that will let you step out of daily life into a world of mystery, laughs and falling in love, you’ll enjoy CHANCE OF A LIFETIME.

So, come along with me to Harmony.

With a degree in Family Studies, Thomas is a marriage and family counselor by education, a background that enables her to write about family dynamics. Honored in 2002 as a Distinguished Alumni by Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Thomas enjoys interacting with students on the West Texas A & M University campus, where she currently serves as Writer In Residence.
“My door is usually open to students all morning,” explains Thomas, who talks to the classes at the University and on other campuses during her many speaking engagements when not writing in her spacious office in WTAMU’s Cornette Library. “They come by to visit and ask questions about being a writer. When I was a child, being a writer wasn’t an option. All the people I knew had regular jobs. I’m hoping that students will see that being a writer is a possibility. This is particularly important in these days when programs in the arts are being cut in the public schools.”
Commenting on her contribution to the arts, Thomas said, “When I was teaching classes full time, I thought I was making the world a better place. Now I think of a teacher, or nurse, or mother settling back and relaxing with one of my books. I want to take her away on an adventure that will entertain her. Maybe, in a small way, I’m still making the world a better place.”
While the author toured the country speaking to Desk and Derrick clubs about her 2003 novel, THE WIDOWS OF WICHITA COUNTY, the members of various chapters formed a Jodi Thomas Fan Club. The group enthusiastically promotes her novels and public appearances and even volunteers to provide drivers for her out-of-town engagements.
When not working on a novel or inspiring students to pursue a writing career, Thomas enjoys traveling with her husband, Tom, renovating a historic home they bought in Amarillo, and “checking up” on their two grown sons.

Posted October 25, 2011 by Holly in Giveaways, Promotions | 17 Comments

Today Jodi Thomas is here with a quick note about The Comforts of Home, the third book in her Harmony, Texas series (Berkley, 11/1/11). The entire series is fabulous. If you haven’t read it yet, you really need to.

______________________

THE COMFORTS OF HOME will be hitting the stands on Nov. 1, 2011 and I’m very excited to see my people of Harmony, Texas come alive.  In my mind they already are and sometimes I feel like they’re so real that I could pack my bag and go down for a visit any time I liked.
With writing it’s always been that way for me.  I don’t really feel like I create characters, I feel like I just meet people and get to know them.  If I’m lucky they tell me their story.  When I meet people who read and love my books I always like to hug them.  After all, we have friends in common.
Once in a while a characters plays at the corner of a writer’s mind for a long time before their story begins to grow.  Ronelle Logan was like that with me.  She was in WELCOME TO HARMONY as a girl who worked in the post office and eats alone every day in the diner.  I knew she’d have her own story one day even from the beginning.  As she wakes up to the world around her she sees what her life is really like and wants more.
I had a great time writing this book and hope you all will enjoy the journey through this story with me.  Step into Harmony and enjoy THE COMFORTS OF HOME.

Thanks for reading.

Guest Review: Somewhere Along the Way by Jodi Thomas

Tracy’s review of Somewhere Along the Way (Harmony #2) by Jodi Thomas

Ever since she claimed Harmony, Texas, as her home, eighteen-year-old Reagan Truman finds herself drawn to other who have made their way here. Shaped by the loneliness she’s known most of her life, Reagan has finally found a place she belongs-and doesn’t want anything to get in her way. But when her life is put in jeopardy and the whole town comes together to save her, she’ll discover that learning to trust the love that’s come into our hearts is the greatest gift of all.

This books takes up 2 years after Welcome to Harmony ended.

The book pretty much revolves around Gabe Leary. He grew up in Harmony but got out from under his drunken father as soon as he could. He joined the Army and was happy there until he overheard a plot against his life. He fled and is now back in Harmony – hiding out but eking out more than a good living writing and drawing graphic novels. His mail drop at a Harmony building happens to be directly across from Liz Matheson who is hanging out her shingle after becoming a lawyer. The two start a strange but compelling, for them both, relationship.

In the meantime Reagan has been living with her “uncle” Jeremiah and becoming part of his family; something she always longed to do. She’s made friends and her home in Harmony but her life is up in the air. Uncle Jeremiah wants her to head off to college and the only thing that Reagan wants to do is stay by Jeremiah’s side, help him in his orchards, and remain in Harmony for the rest of her life.

Gabe Leary saves Reagan’s life one night and it starts a series of events that “outs” his life to the public of Harmony. However by becoming Reagan’s guardian angel he finds something that he didn’t even know that he was looking for, a home.

This is another wonderful book by Jodi Thomas. She has a way of telling us the story about almost everyone in Harmony but does it in a way that it all coalesces into a beautiful story of home, love and acceptance. I never felt like I wanted to get back to one part of the story or another because they all fed into each other so nicely. The people of Harmony are so very different from each other but whether they all get along or not they find a way to make Harmony a great small town to live in.

A fantastic read that I highly recommend!

Guest Review: Welcome to Harmony by Jodi Thomas

Tracy’s review of Welcome to Harmony by Jodi Thomas

Sixteen-year-old runaway Reagan has always wanted a place to belong. She’s never had a real home of her own, but perhaps she could borrow someone else’s. Under an assumed name and identity, she moves to Harmony, Texas, but keeps her distance from the welcoming townsfolk. Until prairie fires threaten Harmony-and Reagan learns the true meaning of family, friends, and home.

When Reagan lands in Harmony she feels like she’s home. She had cleaned rooms at a nursing home and had read letters and newspapers from Harmony to her friend Miss Beverly. When Reagan landed in Texas she wasn’t sure what she’d do but the decision was taken out of her hands. She was taken straight to Jeremiah Truman, Miss Beverly’s brother, since she had told people her name was Truman. Though they get off to a rocky start Jeremiah and Reagan hit it off, in their own gruff way, and Reagan stays with him.

Reagan also finds a friend in Noah McAllen, fellow high school student and local bull rider. Noah, also called Preacher, befriends Reagan and she starts to care for him as well as others in town. She’s had a rough past – although we never find out exactly what…only that she’s been shipped from foster home to foster home.

Then there’s Noah’s sister, Alex, who is the town sheriff. Alex is carrying around guilt from her older brother’s death from 3 years earlier and it puts a shadow on everything she does, including her interactions with volunteer fire chief, Hank Matheson. She cares about him but since her older brother and Hank were best friends she can’t look at Hank without thinking about Warren. For Hank’s part he can’t look at Alex without wanting her. He’s a wonderful man who loves his family, his ranch, especially his niece and of course Alex. He takes care of Harmony and all the people that are in it to the best of his ability.

Then we have Tyler Wright who’s not exactly a people person. He runs the local funeral home as his father and grandfather did before him. He enjoys it to a point but there are definitely things about it he hates. He can’t remember anyone’s name but a few in town and he loves old maps. He starts an internet conversation with a woman that he had dinner with the year previously and it seems to be a romance.

Then fires start breaking out all around town and Alex and Hank are put to work to save the land. Tyler is thought to be a suspect by some, but only a few. Reagan, Jeremiah and Noah are attempting to save the Truman land and no one can figure out who’s setting the fires.

I have to tell you that I just adored this book. It had romance, intrigue, family, humor, acceptance…oh I could go on and on. Jodi Thomas truly knows how to write a story that has all the parts of a story that you love and she wraps them up in a wonderful tale that has you flipping pages faster than you thought possible. I don’t think there was anything about the book that I didn’t like and that’s pretty difficult! I can’t wait to read the next book in the series on Harmony and find out what’s happening with all of the interesting characters that she’s created.
