Book description:

She has nothing left to lose

Like all clichés, this one is true at its core. Racked with grief over her son Danny’s brutal death, Sarah Patterson steels herself to take revenge on his murderer. When detective Mac Donovan stops her from shooting Samuel Tate on the courthouse steps, he risks his career—and the case against Tate—to protect her.

With a serial child-killer walking free, New Orleans is taut with anticipation of his next savage crime and the police and FBI are helpless. But Tate has developed a sick fascination with Sarah Patterson—and he’ll kill to keep her attention. With Mac’s help, Sarah positions herself at the center of a dangerous operation designed to stop Tate for good.

Nothing can bring Danny back…but Sarah is hell-bent on ensuring no mother suffers as she has at the hands of Samuel Tate.

Sarah Patterson has endured what no mother should ever have to face…the violent death of her child. After Danny went missing and then turned up dead, Sarah lost more than her son. She lost her husband, her job, her home. Blaming her husband for letting Danny out of his sight, Sarah’s marriage crumbled shortly after Danny’s death. She only lives for one thing…seeing her son’s killer brought to justice.

Though Sarah hoped that Samuel Tate would be brought to justice through a court of law, she is prepared when he is released on a technicality. All she wants is to see Tate dead, even if it is by her own hand. Waiting on the courthouse steps when his case is dismissed, Sarah is a split second from pulling the trigger when she is tackled by Detective Mac Donovan.

Mac risks his career when he helps Sarah. He can’t help but be drawn to the woman who has had such tragedy, yet somehow manages to keep living. When people around her start turning up dead, Sarah is certain that it all ties back to Tate. Mac is not so sure. It doesn’t take him long to come around to her way of thinking. For some reason, Tate has a weird fixation on Sarah and all they can hope to do is catch him before he kills again.

I don’t think Wilson could have done a better job of writing a mother in this situation. Her helplessness when her son’s killer is released, her determination to bring him to justice, it was just all extremely well written. Seeing her slowly come back to life with the help of Mac is something that was truly miraculous.

As a mother, this story touched me on an even deeper level. No parent wants to think that something like this could happen to their child. Yet if it ever did, I imagine I would have done exactly what Sarah did.

If you want a book that engages your emotions, this is it.
