Review: The Last Forever by Deb Caletti

Posted August 2, 2014 by Rowena in Reviews | 0 Comments

Rowena’s review of The Last Forever by Deb Caletti.

Endings and beginnings sit so close to each other that it’s sometimes impossible to tell which is which.

Nothing lasts forever, and no one gets that more than Tessa. After her mother died, it’s all she can do to keep her friends, her boyfriend, her happiness from slipping away. And then there’s her dad. He’s stuck in his own daze, and it’s so hard to feel like a family when their house no longer seems like a home.

Her father’s solution? An impromptu road trip that lands them in a small coastal town at Tessa’s grandmother’s. Despite all the warmth and beauty there, Tessa can’t help but feel even more lost.

Enter Henry Lark. He understands the relationships that matter. And more importantly, he understands her. A secret stands between them, but Tessa’s willing to do anything to bring them together—because Henry may just be her one chance at forever.

When Tessa’s mother dies, her life goes into a bit of a tailspin.  Her father has checked out on being a Dad and spends most of his free time, high.  Tessa’s dealing with her own grief but when her father wants to go on a spontaneous road trip, Tessa is swept up in it and ends up being left behind in Parrish Island with her grandmother for the summer.

It is here that she meets Henry Lark.  Henry Lark was a sweet love interest, one that I really liked even though I was a bit leery about him since it was obvious that he was hiding a big secret.  He was kind and he was sweet and just the perfect gentleman and every scene with him and Tessa was just fantastic.

At first, all of the plant talk made absolute no sense to me and to be honest, was a bit boring but then as the story progresses and you start to understand what’s going on, I didn’t mind all of the plant talk.  I thought it was pretty great that Tessa was trying to keep her mother’s plant alive.

There’s a lot to like about this story, Henry was pretty good and Tessa had her moments but throughout a good chunk of the story, it was hard for me to connect with Tessa.  I was a bit disappointed with that because I thought I’d connect or understand a lot of what she was going through but I don’t know, it just didn’t click for me for a bit but in the end, I thought she really came into her own and I was glad for it.

Overall, this was a good, solid story about a young girl just trying to find her way after losing her mother.  It isn’t my favorite Caletti but it was still enjoyable and I will definitely be checking out more from this author.

Book Watch: The Story of Us by Deb Caletti.

Posted July 22, 2011 by Rowena in Promotions | 2 Comments

A new novel about love, life, and everything in-between… from fan-favorite and award-winner Deb Caletti.

Cricket’s on a self-imposed break from her longtime boyfriend, trying to figure out whether she’s in it for the right reasons. But this is a bad week to try to figure it all out. After ditching two previous husbands-to-be at the airport, Cricket’s mother Daisy is finally getting married, to Dan Jax. Cricket loves Dan, but as the families and friends start to arrive for Wedding Week at the beautiful guest house on Bishop Rock, run by old hippies Ted and Rebecca Rose and their sweet, sexy son Ash, things start getting complicated.

There’s no airport on Bishop Rock, as far as anyone knows, but Cricket fears that Dan is in danger of becoming ditched husband-to-be number three, and Cricket’s own desires have chosen now to have a mind of their own. Because even though her boyfriend looms large in her mind, Ash is right in front of her…

Ooh, a runaway bride for a mother and a new boy on the horizon with the old boy still hanging around? Oh yes, bring it on please! This sounds like a whopping drama filled book and I’m completely in! I so want to read this book and I really enjoyed the last book that I read by Caletti so I’m totally in. According to Goodreads, this book doesn’t come out until April 24, 2012 so that’s a bit of a bummer but I can be patient until (I guess) but woo hoo, this book sounds good!

Review: Stay by Deb Caletti.

Posted December 13, 2010 by Rowena in Reviews | 5 Comments

Main Character: Clara
Love Interest: Finn Bishop.
Series: None
Author: Website|Facebook|Twitter|Goodreads

Clara’s relationship with Christian is intense from the start, and like nothing she’s ever experienced before. But what starts as devotion quickly becomes obsession, and it’s almost too late before Clara realizes how far gone Christian is—and what he’s willing to do to make her stay.

Now Clara has left the city—and Christian—behind. No one back home has any idea where she is, but she still struggles to shake off her fear. She knows Christian won’t let her go that easily, and that no matter how far she runs, it may not be far enough….

Wow, this book was one intense roller coaster of emotions.

I have never been through anything like Clara has been through with her relationship with Christian but man did Deb Caletti do a fantastic job of putting me in Clara’s shoes. She did a phenomenal job of making me feel what Clara felt. The confusion, the frustration, the fear. I felt it all while reading this book and right from the very beginning, I was gripped.

It started with a meeting of the eyes across a crowded basketball court and a love blossomed between two people that was intense and chock full of emotions that you can’t help but crave it, lust after it and then once it becomes too much, you’re unsure of what to do next. Do you stay or do you go? If you go, can you live with erasing someone who has come to mean so much to you out of your life? Learning to move on and learning to like yourself again after being in an obsessive relationship is hard.

This book follows Clara as she tries to do exactly that. Getting out of the emotionally abusive relationship she had with Christian was hard but over the course of this book, you see Clara trying to move on with her life and trying to come to terms with the person she was with Christian and the person she wants to be from now on. You see just how strong Clara is and you want her to get better right along with her Dad and her best friend.

I thoroughly enjoyed my first trek into the writing of Deb Caletti. This book was deep and it was wonderfully written because though I’ve never been through any of the things that Clara has, I connected with her and I wanted to hold her hand while she got her life back. Meeting Finn Bishop helped round this story out and I really enjoyed it.

From the secondary characters to Clara herself, this book is filled to the brim with awesomeness and a whole lot of ugliness too. There were times where I would get so frustrated with Clara but I understood that she’s not perfect and I was okay with it. It was interesting to see this kind of relationship. In YA books, we’re spoiled with great love triangles and awesome couples but Deb Caletti went another way in the telling of a story of a broken couple trying to move on with the rest of their lives. The ups and downs made for such an interesting story that I couldn’t put this down even when the book slowed a bit in the middle.

Deb Caletti did a great job of weaving a story that I totally fell in with and I totally recommend this book to lovers of Caletti’s previous work and contemporary YA stories with realistic themes.

Book Watch: Stay by Deb Caletti.

I’ve not read anything by Deb Caletti but I’ve got to say that I’m mighty curious. You guys already know of my not so secret shame (the cover snob thing). I’m drawn to covers that I absolutely love and I will gladly walk away from a book if the cover is hideous.

I love Deb Caletti’s covers and one of these dang days, I’m going to read her books and I’m thinking this book would be a great place to start. Thanks to Kristi The Story Siren for bringing this book to my attention.

I love the colors and the simplicity of the cover. Too freaking cute.

Clara’s relationship with Christian is intense from the start, and like nothing she’s ever experienced before. But what starts as devotion quickly becomes obsession, and it’s almost too late before Clara realizes how far gone Christian is–and what he’s willing to do to make her stay.

Sounds pretty hot darn good, if you ask me. Devotion quickly turns to obsession? Ooh…bring on that kind of drama! The book comes out on April 19, 2011 so mark your calendars and save your money! =P
