Commercial Messages: A Guest Post by Author DC Juris

Posted July 20, 2012 by Tracy in Reviews | 3 Comments

Hey folks! I’m DC Juris, and I’ve got the guest spot today! For those of you who don’t know me, I’m a transgender guy who writes GLBTQ and heterosexual romances – mostly contemporary and fantasy.
A while back, a Facebook friend of mine posted a little rant about a commercial she hated. I don’t remember which one it was, but she was concerned over the message it sent to kids. It was one of those ones that showed a guy being stupid and a woman being intelligent. Her concern was that it suggested to her young son that men were stupid and therefore ultimately bound by their ability to hook themselves up with a smart woman. Only then would they succeed.
At that time, I think I posted something about a commercial I hated, and left it at that. I didn’t think much about what she said. Commercials are commercials, and I don’t put much stock in them.
That is, until I spotted a commercial for the new Dr Pepper Ten. They’re deliberately marketing it at men, and saying it’s “not for women.” What the heck? Since when does soda conform to gender boundaries? And what makes it for men? It’s got only ten calories, but has a bold flavor. Because women only want calorie free soda with no flavor? Seriously? My husband loves diet soda. At 6′ 2″ and 350 lbs, I’d like to see someone walk up to him and tell him he’s now a woman because he drinks diet soda. Really – go ahead and try it.
But the whole thing got me thinking, and I started paying more attention to the commercials on my television. And I noticed something – they’re pretty damned sexist – and not just against women. I expected a large number of commercials to be sexist against women. After all, sex sells (or at least marketing people think it does) so seeing scantily clad women in advertisements is nothing new. Also, women have always been portrayed as rather stupid and stereotypical in commercials. I don’t remember what the product was, but I distinctly recall an ad that showed a woman digging in her purse, trying in vain to find her keys so she could hurry up and run inside and answer her phone. Of course, she had everything in her purse – on top of her keys, no less – including things she didn’t need, and the “purse” was really just a giant satchel with no organization. You know, ’cause women clearly can’t handle that much complication.
What amazed me, was the number of commercials that portray men as complete and total idiots. I sat down with my husband to see what he thought, and his top three were:
1. The Bug Light commercial where the guy is “climbing” the rock wall, but he’s only really a few inches off the ground and he’s about to piss his pants. Interestingly enough, Hubby was also offended that they refer to this action as being “girly.” Hubby spouted off a list of women he personally knew who could kick this guy and all his friends’ asses.
2. The State Farm commercial where the guy can’t drive for shit and thinks that “multiple car discount” is where you have one car, but multiple accidents.
3.The Travelocity commercial where the guy takes his wife and daughter to a crappy hotel, and the daughter is “swimming” in the empty pool. Hubby’s response? “Now what is that supposed to teach the little girl about her father? That he’s a moron who can’t handle a simple vacation booking? Or that he’s too much of a push over to speak up and say there’s been a mix up and he wants a better hotel.”
There’s a bigger message that all of these ads send, though, and for me, I think the message is that status-quo with our gender stereotypes is just fine, for the most part. Sure, there are some brilliant marketing campaigns out there that don’t seem to be offensive – I personally like the talking baby, and the mayhem commercials. But, by and large, nothing has changed. Women are still clueless and vapid, more focused on their man’s body style than his brains. And thank god, because apparently men have no brains to speak of. No wonder they have to use Axe Body Spray to attract a mate!

Guest Review: A Good Bargain by DC Juris

Tracy’s review of A Good Bargain by DC Juris

David ends up with more than he bargained for when a hot, young stud-muffin named Brandon catches his eye!

Awkward and unsure, David has finally reentered the dating scene. A hot, young stud-muffin named Brandon seems like the perfect start, but things get complicated when Brandon makes a startling confession. Is Brandon the right choice for David, or did David just get way more than he bargained for?

David has decided to make the move to get back into the dating scene and decides to head to a bar. He ends up picking up Brandon who is quite a bit younger than David’s 40 years.

David takes Brandon home but he’s quite shy in getting things started with the younger man and is doubting his decision to bring Brandon home.

While watching a movie the two start to get comfy and one thing leads to another but what happens in the aftermath of sex?

This was a very, very short story at just 10 pages. David was very cute in his shyness and I could really see, after hearing some of his background, how he would be quite unsure of himself and what he’s doing in bringing a man home with him on his first night out. But he got through his timidity and really took the bull by the horns.

Then there’s Brandon. Brandon was young. Not that I didn’t think they should be together because of the age difference (Brandon’s 23 and David’s 40), but just in the way he spoke, his over enthusiastic responses to David and some of his actions. It was hard for me to see how David wouldn’t be made to feel even older and out of the loop because of the way Brandon acted.

This really just a cute, quick sex romp between two men and we get a little story and background to go with it. If that’s what you’re looking for then this is the perfect book for you.

Rating: 3 out of 5

What I Read Last Week

Posted March 7, 2011 by Tracy in Features | 11 Comments

I have pictures! My youngest got her glasses this past week and she loves them. No problem with getting her to wear them as she wants to wear them constantly! I tried to get pictures that showed the true colors of the glasses but I don’t think they turned out well. The front of the glasses are a brown color with a turquoise and green inside. Very stylish and cute!
I’m just happy that her eyesight has improved! 🙂 We also had a parent/teacher conference with her teacher this week and she’s doing really, really well in school so that’s wonderful! (She obviously takes after her father in the math department because I suck at math! lol)
Other than glasses life is moving along in our house. It seems like life has its highs and lows but isn’t that how it is all the time? I think ours are just more intense.
I did go and see the movie The Adjustment Bureau yesterday. Kind of a strange movie but it had a very sweet romance in it so it made it all worth it. lol. I’m such a romantic!
Anyway, on to what I read this past week:
I was trying to catch up on my Book Binge reading this week so I read quite a few for that site.  I started off with Hidden Away by Maya Banks. This is book 3 in her KGI series and was Garrett’s story. He’s put in charge of watching a woman in hopes that her half brother will be drawn out and he can then be arrested as he’s not a nice man. Garret doesn’t expect to fall in love with the woman though. I really liked this book – not quite as much as I liked book 2, No Place to Run, but still a very good read. You can read my review here if you’re interested. 4 out of 5
Next was a very short book called A Good Bargain by DC Juris – another Book Binge read. This was a 10 page story of a 40 year old man who was married to a woman for various reasons – even though he’s gay and is now divorced and has decided to get back into the dating scene. He ends up going to a bar and picks up a very young man and brings him home. He starts to have doubts about whether he should really be bringing young men home but things end up working out in the end. It was cute. More sex than story but cute. 3 out of 5
I read Saddled and Spurred by Lorelei James after that – yet another Book Binge read (I told you I was trying to catch up!). This is book 2 in the Blacktop Cowboys series. The story was about Harper who lives in Muddy Gap, Wyoming and holds two part-time jobs. When one of her jobs goes under she is desperate to find work and there are very few options open to her for a variety of reasons. Her friend hooks her up to work as a ranch hand for a friend of hers, Bran. Harper is a nail technician and past beauty queen but she’s not afraid of hard work. Bran and Harper, though trying to keep things on a professional basis can’t deny their attraction to each other – or eventually their feelings for one another. This was another good installment in the series. I would have liked to have seen more depth with the characters at some points in the book but overall pretty good. 3.75 out of 5
My next read was The Vampire Voss by Colleen Gleason. The series is about Regency Vampires and the first book was about, you guessed it, Voss. He’s fallen for a human woman but she’s not all that happy to hear he’s a vamp. You can read my review here. 3.5 out of 5
Love in an Elevator by Vivian Vincent was one of my Tracy’s TBR Challenge reads for the week. This was a pretty short novella about a woman who is stuck in an elevator with her ex-boyfriends twin. They’ve always had feelings for each other but have ignored them. They do the nasty in the elevator but then Trey steps back and shuts himself off from Dana because he knows that he’s not her type. The sex was steamy in this one but the main characters acted so childish in this story I wanted to slap both of them. 2 out of 5
Another of my Tracy’s TBR Challenge reads for the week was An Indecent Proposition by Emma Wildes. This was the story of a Duke and an Earl who are mighty drunk and decide that to make a wager about who is the better lover. They get many offers from women who want to be the one to decide between the two but only one offer really intrigues them. When they meet the woman they find that she is a widowed lady who they have met before but she is known for her standoffish, icy demeanor. They are intrigued and the duke decides that they will spend a week together. I really liked both the lady and the duke together – there’s was just a sweet romance, even though the duke wouldn’t see it as a romance. The earl wagered but only because the woman he loved had gotten engaged to someone else. During the course of the book he not only helps the lady and the duke come together but gets off his ass and goes after the woman he loves. This was my first time reading Ms. Wildes’ work and I really liked it. I have another of her books on my shelf and will have to pull it out sooner rather than later. 4 out of 5
Another Book Binge read was Never Again by Michele Bardsley. This is book 1 in the Wizards of Nevermore series and it was good. I really like Ms. Bardsley writing. She has a great way of bring intrigue and fun together to make a great combo. In this book we meet Lucy who is desperate for shelter and is running away from an evil man. She heads to Nevermore to ask her ex-brother-in-law to help her. He turns her away – after all her sister tried to kill him 10 years before, but he gets a bout of conscience and heads after her. On top of the romance which was good but a bit rushed, imho, there was the story of a resident of Nevermore who was trying to gain power in an evil way. Despite the romance going to fast I really liked the book. 4 out of 5
Last on the list for the week was Mongrel by KZ Snow. I really loved KZ’s writing. She has this way of dragging me in to whatever story I’m reading of hers and not letting go. Mongrel was no different. This was a steampunk m/m novel where we met young and thoroughly human, Will, who works for the mechanical circus selling medicine/tonic. He meets Fanule who is a mongrel one night at the circus and eventually the two fall in love. But there’s so much more than a romance in this book. The story covers the constant hate and distrust of the humans of the mongrel community as well as the horrible things leaders of the province are subjecting the mongrels to. I really liked the world – although I think I would have liked to have learned more about Taintwell, where the mongrels lived. It’s a story about acceptance and fighting for your rights as a living soul and it was very good. 4 out of 5

Guest Review: Perfect Christmas by DC Juris

Ames’ review of Perfect Christmas by DC Juris

Depressed and lonely, Evan has nothing to look forward to on Christmas but his TV dinner and store-bought cookies, while his lover, Drake, spends the holiday traveling for business. But a special delivery changes everything, and Evan finds himself in the middle of a perfect Christmas. Worn out from his stocking stuffer, Evan’s not sure how he’s going to handle his present, but when Drake reveals that Evan’s gift is a threesome with none other than their hunky friend Mike, Evan summons the energy!

Ok, if you’re in the mood for a quick hot m/m/m story with a holiday theme, this wasn’t bad. However, I had a few issues. Namely, lack of condom use and then when Drake shows Evan his present, Mike, I was a bit surprised. Because obviously Drake didn’t discuss inviting a third person to their bed with Evan and he went along with it. This didn’t work for me because what about jealousy? Especially when Drake tells Evan it’s permanent.

But other than that, it was ok.  The author did a good job in showing how much Drake loved Evan even when he wasn’t around.  Despite my issues about Drake not discussing things with Evan, you can tell theirs is a strong relationship.

This is something to warm you up on a cold night, if you like m/m/m. And when I say quick, I mean it. Perfect Christmas is only 25 pages.

3 out of 5. Not really for me but can see where others might enjoy it.
