YOU WRITE THE BOOKS
By Alina Adams
The first four romance novels I published, a pair of Regencies followed by a pair of Contemporaries, were paperback originals for AVON and DELL.
I wrote each book over the course of a year, they were published about eighteen months later, and received some nice reviews. Unfortunately, by the time those reviews came out, I could barely remember what the story had been about (because I was already so busy plotting out the next one), much less implement any of the changes suggested by readers and reviewers.
That’s the problem with print titles. Once they’re set, they’re set in stone.
Not so with digital editions.
After four romances, five figure skating mysteries, three soap-opera tie-ins, and two non-fiction books, I am launching my inaugural digital-first romance novel. But, I’m not going to do it alone.
You’re going to do it with me.
“Counterpoint: An Interactive Family Saga” is a story that I start. And that you finish. Volume One sets up the characters and what they want (love, of course – alas, with the person absolutely worst for them), followed by the myriad of obstacles to my characters getting what they want (family secrets, vengeful ex-wives, blackmail, self-sacrifice, all that good stuff).
At the end, there’s a link to either a Message Board or Facebook page where readers can tell me what they’d like to see happen.
I am going to collect that information, take it under advisement, and write Volume Two based on your suggestions. And then begin the process all over again for Volume Three.
Right now, the plan is for a new book to come out once a month. Will I be able to meet my own deadline? That’s one of the cliff-hangers! (Though, take my word for it, the ones in the book are more fun.)
And will readers want to become writers?
Another cliff-hanger. And one I don’t have the answer to. My background is in soap-operas. I worked for “As the World Turns” and “Guiding Light.” I wrote tie-in books for them. And I listened to the fans grumble about plot points and storyline twists they wished had gone in another direction.
I couldn’t take their suggestions under advisement then. But, I can now, with “Counterpoint: An Interactive Family Saga.”
I can’t wait to hear what you all want to happen next!
