Holly’s review of Tall Tales and Wedding Veils by Jane Graves

Accountant Heather Montgomery is a planner. So never in her wildest dreams did she think she’d run into sexy charmer Tony McCaffrey in Vegas, play lady luck, and celebrate his jackpot with a champagne-soaked night. And she certainly never expected to wake up the next morning married! How could this good girl pick a man whose fridge is empty and whose apartment is a disaster zone, yet still drives her so crazy with lust she can’t see straight?

Quickly hitched and happily ditched, Tony can’t wait to get back to his playboy ways. But when Heather’s family is thrilled that their no-nonsense daughter is finally in love, he proposes a plan: stay married for a month to repay his good luck charm, even though she sterilizes his toothbrush and forbids anything between the sheets. But Heather is more than he bargained for–a sharp-witted, passionate woman who just might turn his near miss into wedded bliss!

2008 has unofficially become my year for contemporaries. I’ve always been a huge fan of the genre, but with the flood of paranormals it’s hard to find good straight contemporaries right now. It’s novels like this one that remind me that good contemps still exist.

The blurb does a pretty good job of outlining the story, so I’m just going to go straight into what I liked/disliked.

I absolutely adored Heather. She was such a great heroine. Pragmatic and straight-laced, she knew her strengths and weakness and wasn’t afraid to point out both. I love that she stood up for herself and constantly called Tony on his bad behavior. She didn’t let him get away with anything. Definitely no wilting flower, this heroine. I also like that she didn’t try to delude herself about Tony or their situation. They agreed to keep it light and friendly and she stuck to that. But when she realized she had feelings for him, she didn’t shy away from telling him. She had a great personality, too, with a “can-do” attitude that worked very well inside the context of the story.

Tony was also a great character, though it did bother me that he was written as a stereotypical man, right down the line. Loved beer and sports, hated to be shown up by a woman, loved a different girl each night, had daddy issues, was a total slob, blah blah blah. It got old after awhile. Especially the way he kept taking things out on Heather. Though I do have to give him credit, because every time he was wrong, he admitted he was wrong. It takes a strong man to do that. I also loved his innate sexuality and overall attitude towards Heather. He was just sweet to her, going out of his way to make her feel like a desirable woman and trying to help her with her family.

One last thing I have to mention: My revenge loving self absolutely adored that one of the main considerations for them pretending to be married for a month was so Heather could one-up her snotty cousin. I seriously loved that. That right there was almost enough to make the story for me. After that, the great characters and fun story were just a bonus.

The story flowed well and I was really wrapped up in it. An excellent light read. I highly recommend it if you’re in the mood for something fun and sweet.

  1. Once again Holly we are on the same page. I read this book over the summer and I gave it the same rating as you. I am currently on a hunt to find more of her books.

  2. I really enjoyed this one!! Like you, I loved Heather – she was a great heroine wasn’t she?
And what I really liked that I found unusual, is the hero started off a jerk, but the author has the ability to make me ‘come around’ and really like him by the end. The same thing happened with the previous book,Hot Wheels And High Heels. The heroine started off pretty shallow but really grew as a character. I really like to see that happen.
