I was reading a post over at The Page Flipper where she talks about another post on another blog that I am subscribed to that I thought was pretty damn terrific. Click here and read the post over at Editorial Ass.
I think she’s on to something.
We, here at Book Binge, get a lot of books for review so I haven’t been going to the bookstore as often as I used to, well until recently. I started going to the bookstore to buy reference books on writing. As I was standing in Borders the other day, I was swept up in how much I missed being in a bookstore. I used to go to the bookstore fairly often and some of my favorite memories were in my Barnes and Noble.
It’s where I met a really great guy years ago, it’s where I take all of my blogging friends that come out to visit me. It’s where I steal books from people’s stack of books if I can’t find another copy anywhere.
So many fun things happen in bookstores and I missed that so, this year for Christmas, everyone on my Christmas list is getting a book. Of all the industries out there, the book industry is going to get all of my money.
So we here at Book Binge urge each of you guys to go out and buy a book. Buy some books for you, buy some books for your friends, family, neighbors, your cousin that can’t cook to save her life, your boss, whoever…just be a pal and buy a book!
You’ll feel much better about yourself, I promise!
You know, I was actually thinking a week or so ago that people were probably going to get books from me this year for Christmas.
As for myself, I simply seemed to cut back, unconsciously, on buying. I used to add to my TBR pile rather willy nilly, but have started being more selective and only buying the ones I have intended to or had my eye on and waiting for. Times are tough, but it is still nice to buy a book every once in a while when I can.
yes please buy books for the holidays! 🙂 Shameless promotion for our campaign, but I’d love us to get up to 200 participants..

I love buying books for people for special occasions – bringing them over to the dark side bwahahaha! 🙂
You would think that, when asked what you wanted for Christmas and replying ‘book vouchers’ you might get book vouchers? That was be a negative 🙁 My relatives just don’t understand the allure of THE BOOK 🙂 And believe me I have tried to, as Tracy put it, draw them to the dark side!
I have to be honest, I only buy the books I consider to be ‘keepers’ – I mostly use the library to feed my addiction. Now I know that sounds bad, but in my defence I often suggest books to the library for purchase and ‘pimp’ books to people, including the librarians 🙂 And if I read a library book and love it then I go and buy it.
I planned on doing this for the holidays, too. It’s so hard going from store to store trying to find the perfect gift for everyone. I’d rather go one stop shopping, and a bookstore is the perfect place for that. There is something for everyone.
Already on that band wagon! I bought several books today for Christmas gifts! And you are so right…I feel absolutely wonderful because of it!! I know if my husband knew what I just spent, he would probably be a bit perturbed by it, but Christmas only comes around once a year…so what the heck!! I just hope they are well received :).
I was just at the bookstore on Tuesday night so my nephew could pick out a book for me to buy for him. I do miss going there since I don’t get to go as often as I used to.
Looooooool. If there is one thing don’t need to tell me to do for me to actually do it, it is buying books. A few months ago I calculated that I spent about 10% of my income of books last year. Thank God I still live at my parents. I’m already dreading the day I need to start checking my expenses – although with the nearly 200 unread books I have at home I should be able to survive for a while :-DDD
As for giving books to my friends and family for Christmas, though, it’s another story. I will give some to my mom and sister-in-law because they love reading, but with my dad and brother it’s hopeless. My dad sticks with the Auto Guide and I’ve given up on trying to get my brother interested in ANY kind of books. After 15 years, I don’t think he’s going to change ;).
Thanks for the heads up Rowena. What an informative post. I had no idea that was how the book publishing industry worked. I confess, I feel a little panicked at the thought of no more books being published.
I’ve been on a crazy book buying binge for the last couple of months. My TBR pile is huge, and they’re mostly new books, although there are some from the UBS.
Still, I’m ever willing to take one for the team. I guess I’ll have to go out and buy a couple of more books to add to my beautiful TBR pile. LOL
Great post! I totally agree!
I love buying books!! I buy at least several books a month. I like to read holding papers. Ebooks are not my thing so I hope paperbacks will not be out of print!
Yup, books are always high on the gift list for everyone in my family. Thanks for reminding people to do it!
