Product Review: Hide-A-Book book covers

Posted May 3, 2009 by Holly in Giveaways, Reviews | 57 Comments

Have you ever lamented the sad, sorry cover some of our favorite novels have been graced with? Ever been kind of embarrassed while reading one in public? Well, this is the product for you.

Hide-A-Book
book covers are the perfect solution. They come available in two sizes: Trade paperback and mass market. With a variety of different styles to choose from, you can personalize your books in the way you want.

I’ve found that these don’t work great on category size books because they tend to slip a bit, but otherwise they’re wonderful. They’re laminated, so I didn’t have to worry about tearing them or getting them dirty, and they really do protect the book covers as well as hiding them.

I was a little confused about how to put it on when I received it, but after checking the website I figured it out soon enough (to be fair, I’m..challenged when it comes to things like this) and had no problems after that. I also like that it comes with an attached ribbon that can be used as a bookmark. Especially since I’m notorious for losing mine.

Overall I think this is a good product. They’re priced between $8 and $15, which I think is reasonable since they’re pretty resilient and totally reusable. If taken care of, these could easily last years. I’d give them a:

4.5 out of 5

Since I want all of you to try them out, we’re going to giveaway four here on the blog: 2 mass market size and 2 trade paperback size. Leave a comment on this post and you’ll be entered to win. Please indicate what size you’d like to be entered to win in your comment.

  1. Oh very cool; I’ve heard about the book covers – various forms/makes I think. However, I can’t help but think – might this not draw even more attention to what you’re reading?
Although I guess at least nobody will know for sure.

  2. *waving hands* Me, me!

I have three book covers for mass market books, and I love them, each and every one of them!

The prettiest and most used one is a wonderful, hand-sewn, denim cover, courtesy of Mad at Novel Thoughts; two others are ingenious cardboard contraptions that expand to fit the spine of the book while protecting it.

But I have recently started reading more trade size books, many of which have somewhat riské covers, so I would really like getting one of these.

    Thank you, ladies!

  3. I’d love to be considered for one. uhm, prob mass market size, since I have more of that size. These are very lovely looking. I’ve thought of trying to make some on my own, but kinda at a loss as to where to start lol

  4. Oh, what a great idea! I would love to have one of either size, although one of the mass market covers would probably be most useful to me.

  5. Thank you ladies for a great opportunity to win something so cute. Would love to win either size. I have several of each size. Have a great day.

  6. @Lime – Until very recently, I didn’t care about covers. I can say, in all honesty, that I’ve never been embarrassed about what I was reading because of the cover. Actually, most of the time they don’t even register for me.

However, my daughter turned 12 in December, and has gotten a lot more curious since then. Although I’m still unashamed of my covers, I do worry about some of them w/ her. Especially erotica titles. These book covers are the perfect solution for me.

@Sarah – I hadn’t thought about looking online, either. Silly, isn’t it, since we spend so much time on the net?

  7. I used to have something like this that was really stretchy and tended to bend the corners of the books. This one looks great! I would love to be in the drawing for either size!

  8. Holly,

If you’re looking for a good cover series-size books, Frwaps has one specifically for series (the call it small-series). I love mine.

No need to enter me in the drawing. I have 25+ book covers. 🙂

Ooh – these look fab! And I love supporting Etsy shops too.

I’d like to throw my hat in for a mass market sized one please 😀

  10. Very cool! I’d like to try one for trade paperback. Most of my mm covers seem ok, but some of the trade ones more risque. Because I often read while waiting to pick my kids up at elementary school, I’d love to have something to cover them. Usually I just don’t read those books then, but I’d really like the flexibility to do so.

  11. Thanks for your nice comments Holly. I’ll definitely have to think about doing some covers for category novels.

If you don’t happen to win a free cover, I’m offering free shipping on any book cover order for Book Binge readers. Just enter “Book Binge” in the comments during checkout.

I love my handy-dandy book cover! (Should I feel bad that it came from ebay, not etsy? It was handmade!) Have been feeling the need for a second though, so please enter me! I would like mass market style, since trades are a bit heavy to read on the elliptical.

(Ooo, and thanks for that nice offer, Shanna! I will definitely keep it in mind if I don’t win. 😉 ) — willaful

P.S. limecello, I’ve been very tempted to get an “unshelved” “guess what I’m reading” shirt to go with my bookcover, but decided that was just asking for trouble. 😉 — willaful

  14. Someone had a really great idea. (Is the contest open to people in Canada? If not and I win one, can I have you send it to my critique partner to forward to me?)

  15. awesome! I love how you can reuse them over and over again without having to worry about getting them ruin and so many pretty designs!

  16. I’ve been looking for covers like those in stores forever and never found any. It’s nice to finally know where I could find some 😀 Are those thick enough to protect the covers as much as hide them, would you say? I’m anal about my books’ condition so there are several I postone reading because I don’t want to risk making dents or tears on the cover or bend the corners by putting the book in my backpack or purse. 🙂

Could you please enter me for a trade size cover? Thank you!

  17. Seneca

Wow. I’ve never, ever felt the need to cover my books. Even my Ellora’s Cave trade size ones I am not afraid to read in public.

(no need to enter me into the contest)

  18. A very good idea! Especially waiting in all these waiting rooms for appts! I’d love to be in for a tradesize one! Thanks

  19. What a great idea! I think I’d use them a ton when lending my favorite books with strange covers out to people. So their first impressions aren’t so tainted. I think I’d use the mass market one more. Thanks for the spotlight on this fun product!

  20. These look great! I could really use either but I’ll go for the trade size.

    Thanks for the chance?

  21. @Christina – THANKS! I’m going to order a couple of those.

@Leah Braemel – I don’t know if Shanna’s offer of free shipping applies outside of the US, but the contest is open to everyone. If you win, we’ll ship to you direct.

  22. Great giveaway Ladies!!! Those are very nice. I have one that i use for MM and would love the be entered for one of the trade size ones. I have quite a few trade size books i cannot bring to school while i am reading them because of the covers.

  23. These are great. What a good idea, especially when I’m reading at the beach I tend to ruin the books and I’m always sorry because of that. Great contest, I would like to be entered for the mass market size. Thanks.

  24. Oh I would love to try one. Tried using one of the kids’ and it just ended creasing the front cover. Thanks for your thoughtfulness

  25. what a great idea! I would like to be entered for both, but if we can only pick one – do the paperback. I think I have more MM books, but the covers of the paperback are ones I’d want to cover up more often. 😉 THANKS!

  26. @Leah, yes free shipping is for any country.

@Mary, the plastic part of the cover is 7mm thick. The covers are meant for protection as well. I’m less than gentle with my books, most of them end up in my bottomless purse and the cover works to protect them pretty well.

  27. These would really come in handy while I’m reading at the kids activities; some books require an advanced degree in yoga to keep their covers hidden. I’d love either size, the mass market size would probably be best though.

  28. Lori

Sounds awesome. IO’m all about the book cover. Especially since all my guys love to make fun of me. /eyeroll

I’d love the mass market size. Also noting the Fwraps site that Cristina mentioned…

  29. I’ve been using an old beat up cloth cover (You know, like kids put on their text books?) for my more erotic books. But these look like they would be handy as well. Sign me up, mass market please! 🙂

  30. Wow! I think that this is a great idea. Even though I love some of the gorgeous, sensual covers, my family teases me mercilessly about some of them =) I also love that they have a bookmark! I would love to be entered for either size.. Thanks you!

  31. This is a cool idea, but is there a better design? How about being able to customize? These look like my mother or grandmother decorated them. Sorry, it is the artist in my coming out. I will shut up now…

  32. I had one some time go and it was pretty horrible, like a purple socket. Those however look gorgeous. I’d love to get a small one for all my favorite paperbacks….

  33. Hmmm I make my own padded fabric covers, but they of course aren’t spill proof. So I would be very interested in trying one of these out! I wonder if they will be as comfortable on my hands with no padding while reading a hardcover book?! But the protection against spills is just great!

  34. Anonymous

Wow! These are super cute, I have one I bought many moons ago from Lands End and it’s falling apart. I’d love to win one of any of these sizes!
