Casee‘s review of Captive of Sin by Anna Campbell.
He pledged his honor to keep her safe…
Returning home to Cornwall after unspeakable tragedy, Sir Gideon Trevithick comes upon a defiant beauty in danger, and vows to protect her whatever the cost. He’s dismayed to discover that she’s none other than Lady Charis Weston, England’s wealthiest heiress-and that the only way to save her from the violent stepbrothers determined to steal her fortune is to wed her himself! Now Gideon must hide the dark secrets of his life from the bride he desires more with every heartbeat.
She promised to show him how to love – and desire – again…
Charis has heard all about Gideon, the dangerously handsome hero with the mysterious past. She’s grateful for his help, but utterly unwilling to endure a marriage of convenience-especially to a man whose touch leaves her breathless. Desperate to drive him mad with passion, she would do anything to make Gideon lose control-and fall captive to irresistible, undeniable sin.
I really enjoyed Claiming the Courtesan a few years back, so I jumped at the chance to give Captive of Sin a try. The blurb was really intriguing and does the book justice.
Sir Gideon Trevithick does not consider himself anyone’s savior, but that’s exactly what he turns out to be when he discovers a beaten woman in the stable of an inn he’s passing through. Something about her prevents Gideon from turning away and he reluctantly offers his help to the obvious damsel in distress.
Charis ran from her two step brothers without considering how she would get where she was going. When Gideon finds her, her first instinct is to flee. Everything that Charis knows about men tells her that she shouldn’t trust Gideon, but her instincts tell her otherwise.
Gideon and Charis are two unique souls. Both have a past that affects their present and will affect their future. As a result of torture, Gideon can’t stand being touched. Regardless of his attraction to her, Gideon can’t touch Charis for longer than a few moments without having a panic attack. Charis knows who Gideon is, but when he tells her his story, she is even more horrified. Everything that Gideon withstood to get home makes her life seem easy.
I think I was expecting something a little more unconventional. The way they came together was most definitely unconventional, but outside of that it really didn’t wow me like I expected it would. I liked the romance and seeing Gideon overcome his demons. Charis seemed rather childish to me, when it seems that her experience with her family should have matured her. The resolution was predictable, but I wasn’t unhappy with it.
4 out of 5.
