I gave up on Ward quite some time ago (I think it was right after Z’s book). If there’s one thing I can’t stand it’s an inconsistent author. While I appreciated the fresh take on an old theme with Dark Lover, I’m afraid she lost me along the way. Somewhere in the middle of the second book, if I’m not mistaken. I stuck with her for awhile after, hoping she’d recapture the magic of Dark Lover, but sadly it soon became necessary for us to go our separate ways.
Two characters have always intrigued me, however: John Matthew and Tohrment. I speculated from the first that JM was really the reincarnation of Darius, who died in Dark Lover. He was mute so that he couldn’t share the secret (a condition of his being returned to Earth). Since I haven’t read the last few books, I can’t say what new developments there have been with his character/storyline. I know Xhex (pronounced Hex, in case you were wondering) is his heroine and that’s about it. Now his book, Lover Mine, is about to be released.
The hot new novel in the Black Dagger Brotherhood by the #1 New York Times bestselling author
John Matthew has come a long way since he was found living among humans, his vampire nature unknown. Taken in by The Brotherhood, no one could guess what his true history was-or his true identity.
Xhex has long steeled herself against the attraction to John Matthew. Until fate intervenes and she discovers that love, like destiny, is inevitable.
So the question is..do I read it or not? The fact that it’s a hardcover already puts me off. Add in the fact that I haven’t read the last 4 or so releases and I’m leaning toward “no, not gonna”. But then I think, this is John Matthew, and I tip back the other direction.
What do you think? Are you planning to buy/read it?
Lover Mine will be available from Berkely, April 27, 2010. You can buy it here or here (for $12.99) in e-format.
Those who love this series (I am among them) might recommend the reading, but honestly I am more practical and I admit that those that left the series behind have lost alot of the thread. The series has become very much about the war between good and evil, the pairings becoming a subplot. The story of John Matthew being a strong secondary line for several books. I think you might feel lost if you have been COMPLETELY removed from the series since Z. Someone to give you a recap of what has happened in the last few books will help but don’t expect to find the same JM that you left.
I love this series but I also have admitted that this is no longer a paranormal romance series but a much darker paranormal fiction with a bit of romance on the side. I also can see how many people would be turned off by the direction the books have taken.
Regardless, I hope to get my book as soon as it’s released because I have been waiting too long to find out what is going to happen!
Yes, damn it. I’m going to read it. NO! I am NOT going to buy it. But I’ll be mooching it off of someone to read.
I find myself confounded by Ward. Her books have an everything but the kitchen sink style that makes me batty. Too many storylines, too much gangsta shit for a bunch of white-boy vampires, too many wimpy heroines. And yet, I can’t seem to stop scheming to borrow the next one when it comes out.
I really AM like a crack addict. I say I’m going to stop. And then…not so much.
I am torn. I have always love the JM character but have never loved Xhex. If I do read the book it would be for the other characters story line and not for JM. Catching up the Wrath, Butch, Z and my favorite little dragon boy.
I will fully admit I skipped most of the Omega parts in Revh’s book just to try and get to the romance. Might have to do a little re-read before getting LM.
I am also planning on getting it from the library and not paying that expensive price. No one can weave a story like the WARDen but I just can’t love where she is headed.
Holly, this is the book I’ve been hanging in there for. I’ve just been waiting to find out if JM really is Darius and then I’m probably done with the series (just as I hung in there with Kenyon just for Archeron). But I swear, if Ward turns Xhex into a doormat like the other brothers’ mates, expect to see me in a police blotter fined for open burning of a certain series of books!
Fortunately, Amazon’s got it for preorder at $9.99 in print, which is actually a bit less than many trade size paperbacks.
And Xhex is pronounced HEX?! WTF? I always thought it was pronounced CHECKS like CHEX cereal. Although, come to think of it, I guess Hex is a bit more bad-ass sounding, isn’t it?
I’ve already ordered my copy from Amazon. Hoping it will be here by Tuesday. I’ve been waiting for JM’s book forever, so I can’t wait for the release. Plus, it is always fun to go to the WARDen’s book signings.
I stopped at Z’s book also, so I’m not going to read it. I liked the first three books and the main characters, don’t get me wrong, but I didn’t like what was happening with the other characters. And I wasn’t really into reading so much about the lessers or whatever they were called. Great writing, but the series just wasn’t for me.
I’m not really sure myself – maybe buy it used or get it from the library. I guess my hang up is that the rest of the Brothers lived and fought for many years, sometimes a century or more, before finding their mates and then JM just barely out of transition finds his.
And like someone else said “everything but the kitchen sink” – with all the other storylines and the direction of some of them – the world and it’s characters just doesn’t hold my interest anymore.
I waited for Butchès book but about cried over the character assassination. Horrid. I did read V but only to see how he could possibly end up with someone other than Butch. I still think they belong to each other.
For me JM has always been a kid so I never cared to read about him – also, now that I have heard the books arenèt really about romance anymore Ièm not sure I care. Dangit – I hit a random button the keyboard again and Ièm getting those fancy es.

I’ve read them all, and hated everything after book four. That’s when she decided to become an urban fantasy writer. She writes great paranormal romance and crap urban fantasy.
I hate John Gary Matthew Stu. I hate any series where the author has a favourite and they take over every book. And I especially hate when the character who takes over is an adolescent – be it a human one or a young vampire.
I won’t be reading this book, and I know I’ll be happier for it.
I am so far behind on this series! I won’t be picking up this one, until I be brave and work myself through the backlist.
