The permanent kind…
It’s been a long time since I’ve read a Category. I tried to read more Category books last year so I joined KMont’s Year of the Category reading challenge and I failed that sucker so badly. I don’t know what my problem is since the category books that I’ve read were all pretty good but for some reason, if they’re not thrown in my face (by Holly) then they’re just nowhere near my radar. It’s not that I think they’re bad books; I’m just dazzled by other books all the time.
However, this weekend I was going through my bookshelves trying to find something to read this month for the Publisher’s Spotlight and I came across this book. How I could have overlooked this book without reading it is beyond me because seriously, check that cover out. That man is frickin’ gorgeous and I overlooked him?
Goodness, I want to have that man’s babies.
This book may have been short but the story itself didn’t suffer for it. I enjoyed the heck out of this story which shouldn’t surprise me because it’s a Jill Shalvis and she sure does know how to spin a story that I will love. She certainly didn’t disappoint me with this one. If you read the firefighter series that she released last year (Flashpoint, Flashback and Heating up the Holidays) then you’ll know the hero’s brother, Dustin Mauer. He was the hero in the short story in Heating up the Holidays. Dustin’s brother, Jason is back in town after years away in the National Guard. He lost his best friend, Matt on the job and it’s been really hard for him. His family is all worried about him but he’s fine. He just needs to find a new plan because he doesn’t know what he wants to do with the rest of his life. So he comes back home to hopefully find out what he wants to do.
He comes back just in time to catch the local flash flood warning. It’s pouring rain outside and there’s all kinds of evacuations going on and then Lizzy Mann knocks on his door, looking for Dustin and hoping to borrow Dustin’s SUV. She needs to get across town and check on her very pregnant sister, Cece. She’s worried and she can’t help but worry even though Cece told her that she was fine.
Jason can’t turn away from a woman in need so he offers to help her go and check on Cece. Lizzy only wants his car but what kind of story would we have if Jason let her take his wheels out all by herself? So off they go, trying to save Cece from the storm.
This was one of those one that got away storylines and I’m a sucker for them. I loved that Jason and Lizzy had a history together and I loved that Lizzy had a crush on Jason back all those many years ago. I ate all of that goodness up, Shalvis did a great job of packing a whole lot of story into this short book without making the romance feel forced or rushed. She did a great job of luring me into the story and keeping me interested in the characters. I grew attached to both Lizzy and Jason and was over the moon when the book ended.
This is definitely a book that you’ll want to check out because it’s got Shalvis’ trademark humor and all around goodness stamped all over it. I adored it and am going to look for more through Shalvis’ back list.
