Tracy’s review of When, Were, and Howl (Wolf n’ Mouse #1) by Jeanette Raleigh

Jen has never enjoyed the full moon. Not like her family and certainly not like her boss, Rob, whose monthly trysts leave the office in a shambles. Jen turns into a mouse on the full moon, the most disrespected form in the were-community.

Her crush on Rob only makes her deep loneliness and feelings of alienation worse. When her friend steals an amulet with the power to turn were-wolf, Jen decides to try it on… only to find that being a wolf isn’t all its cracked up to be.

Jen longs to be like the rest of her family – wolf shifters. She is a mouse and is so embarrassed by this. She even locks herself up in a closet on the days of the full moon so as A)Keep her secret and B)Protect herself from larger shifters who like to play with small things. Jen has a huge crush on her boss, Rob, but since he’s a wolf shifter doesn’t feel comfortable telling him what kind of shifter she is.

When Jen’s friend Ali asks her to hide an amulet that will allow the person wearing it to shift into any animal they desire Jen takes a chance and turns herself into a wolf. The problem is, once she’s in that form she can’t get herself out of it. Rob and Ali try all they can to help Jen but she’s kind of stuck. Will she get out of it and is being a wolf all she thought it would be?

This was a cute story but imo way too short at only 69 pages. We got to know Jen and my heart went out to her with regard to her shift animal. It seemed that her family was ashamed of her, except her sister, and her brother teased her mercilessly. I just wanted to give her a hug.

Rob we just didn’t get to know that well and for someone who is supposed to be a romantic interest for our heroine I thought I should. He seemed like a complete player although he also insinuated that he liked Jen as well so who knows what he was really feeling about her. He did take care of her when she was stuck in the wolf form so that was nice.

My biggest niggle with the story is that it just ended. I was left in what felt like the middle of the scene and that just wasn’t cool to me. I’d like to see where Jen and Rob are going to go – if anywhere and what happens, but if I’m to be left hanging again I don’t think I’ll appreciate it. lol I see that the second story is out so I’ll have to read that one and see what happens.

Rating: 3 out of 5
