Sixteen-year-old Mason Rice is having the night of his life. He’s just delivered an incredible performance in the school play, basked in celebratory afterglow vibes at the party of the year, and lost his virginity to one of his best friends—the gorgeous but previously unobtainable Kat Medina. His dreams are coming true, and the future looks golden.
Unfortunately, Kat sees things very differently. Crossing the friendship line was a big mistake, and all she wants is to forget it and move on, even if that means forgetting Mason altogether. What’s a guy to do? Well, if you’re Mason, you hang your hopes on the first attractive twenty-three-year-old you cross paths with. At first Mason wonders if he’s imagining the chemistry . . . until Colette invites him over to her apartment. Suddenly Mason’s living in a whole new world.
This was an interesting read that really made me think.
Mason is on top of the world. His drama group has just wrapped up their final performance of the school play and they totally killed it. Everyone heads to the after party and his best friends, who were not in the play, also come to hang out. Things are going well, he’s having a good time, when he sees his best friend Kat is upset. Things have been kind of rocky with her boyfriend lately and so he takes her home and comforts her. Since they’ve both had a bit to drink one thing leads to another and these two are doing the horizontal tango. It’s Mason’s first time, but he lies to Kat and says he’s not a virgin. She is. And after all is said and done, she’s really freaked out about what she did and who she did it with. Because that’s why her and her boyfriend were splitsville, because she didn’t want to have sex with him.
So Mason is all excited about Kat because he’s had a crush on her since they first met. But she’s giving him the cold shoulder and acting very very weird around him and he’s so confused about the whole thing. He just wants things to go back to the way they were but Kat doesn’t let that happen. And while he’s trying to figure that all out he meets Colette. She’s a 23 year old (to his 16) acquaintance of his step-mother’s. And he thinks she’s hot and when they run into each other after their initial meeting, Mason definitely feels like they’re flirting.
Colette – or where can I begin with Colette? First of all, this book is set in Canada, in Ontario specifically and I believe the age of consent there is 16. So Colette, when she lets things progress with Mason isn’t breaking the law. But still, for me, the whole thing felt morally wrong. These two people are definitely in completely different places in their lives and the ‘relationship’ means different things to them both. I couldn’t feel sympathetic or relate in anyway to Colette’s character because a 23 year old woman with a 16 year old boy? Yikes. Wrong wrong wrong.
However, as much as I thought they were in a bad thing, this was an interesting read. I was caught up in Mason’s life and all that he was going through. It was interesting as it was from the boy’s point of view. I liked the ending too, it wrapped things up in a believable way. But I just couldn’t get Colette. C+
