Rowena’s review of Never too Late by A. Destiny.
Can acting in love lead to the real thing? This standalone addition to the Flirt series is sweet, fresh, and clean.
Abbey couldn’t be more excited. The end of the school year is coming, as is the annual sophomore class renaissance faire…and the headlining theatrical performance, where Abbey will be starring as a lead. There’s only one problem: her costar, Jason Hardy.
Everyone else might think Jason is perfect, but Abbey knows the truth. She remembers what he did at the school dance, and she knows he’s a total jerk.
But during the daily rehearsals, Abbey starts to see a side to Jason she hadn’t noticed before…and he might not be as bad as she thought. Each day she’s falling for him just a little bit more, and she thinks maybe Jason feels the same.
Or maybe he’s a better actor than Abbey could have guessed.
What a cute book this turned out to be.
Abbey just landed the lead role in the Sophomore class play for the renaissance faire and she couldn’t be more thrilled, until she finds out that she’ll be starring with the one guy she hates, Jason Hardy.
Freshman year, Abbey harbored a crush on Jason with her best friend Olivia but after overhearing him bad mouthing Abbey to his friends, the crush went away and in its place was all of this madness. She’s not impressed with anything about him anymore but when she’s forced to rehearse with him, she starts to wonder if he’s not as bad as she’s been making him out to be. The more time she spends with him, the more she realizes that hate is not at all what she feels for him.
This book took me right back to high school when girls used to get into petty fights over boys. When best friends would bicker about small things that turned into big things.
Jason Hardy has been the eye of Abbey’s best friend’s eye since freshman year and Abbey wasn’t a fan of it. She thought that Olivia could do better than him. Now that she’s spending so much time with him, getting ready for the play, feelings are developing and Abbey is afraid that what she feels for Jason and what she thinks Jason feels for her, will ruin her friendship with Olivia.
What’s a girl to do?
Keep seeing Jason on the down low, duh!
There were times during the book when I wanted to smack some sense into Abbey because she was so worried about what Olivia would think about with her and Jason that instead of coming clean about it from the jump, she continues to see Jason and get closer to him, all while keeping it a secret from Olivia. Umm, hello? That has disaster written all over it. But aside from that, I really enjoyed getting to know both Abbey and Jason. I thought they were too cute and while this isn’t one of those deep YA contemporary reads, it’s still an enjoyable one that I’m sure fans of contemporary YA will like it.
I definitely recommend this one.
