Rowena’s review of Her Sexiest Mistake by Jill Shalvis.

Mia Appleby finally has the life she always wanted. She’s escaped her trailer trash childhood and built a nice life for herself with a marketing job and a cute, little condo. But no matter how much baggage she’s ditched from her past, she still hasn’t managed to shake her greatest weakness-men. So when her new neighbor turns out to be single and oh-so-sexy, Mia’s worried she’s playing with fire . . .

Kevin McKnight can’t get enough of his gorgeous neighbor, but after one amazing night, she’s already showing him the door. Something tells him this is the way she handles most men. But Kevin is far from your average guy-and he’s ready to prove it to Mia. When a blast from her past shakes up Mia’s life in a major way, will she stick with her self-sufficient solo act . . . or take a chance leaning on Kevin’s strong shoulders?

When I’m in a reading slump, I can usually count on a number of authors to drive me right out of that slump and Jill Shalvis is one of them.  She writes my kind of romances.  The contemporary romances with sexy heroes, spunky heroines and a steamy romance.  While this was one of those romances, this didn’t hit all of my happy buttons which is a surprise since it’s a Shalvis.

Now, I should start this review off by saying that I did like this book but it’s not my favorite Shalvis read. The heroine, Mia got on my hot damn nerves but so did her niece, Hope.  Mia is an independent woman who doesn’t need a man in her life.  Actually, she prefers to not have a steady man in her life.  She’s more of a hit it and quit it kind of woman and while there’s nothing wrong with that, the constant way she kept using Kevin, even after her finds out about his feelings for her, got on my nerves.  Where Hope is concerned, I really came to like her in the end but one of the things that I cannot stand is when people start messing with other peoples livelihood.  There are certain things that should never be messed with and that’s someone’s job.  Hope comes into the story with a lot of angst and a whole lot of attitude.  To get back at Mia (who is just as clueless as Hope is, mind you), she starts messing with Mia’s stuff at work.  Stupid teenage pranks that didn’t make me laugh.

But while I had issues with both Mia and Hope, by the end of the book, I liked them.  They both grew but I think it took Mia a lot longer to come around than it did for Hope and that’s probably why I liked Hope more.

Kevin McKnight was a sexy hero.  I liked the way that he was open and upfront about everything from the jump.  He wanted more from the relationship than he was getting from Mia but that didn’t stop him from being a man and taking what Mia would willingly give him.  He was weak but likable and I loved that he wanted to fix everyone’s problems for them.  I thought he was a lot more patient than I would have been with Mia but I guess that’s what love does to a person.

The secondary romance between Mike and Tess was a cute one and I liked seeing them come together, and to seeing Mike come into his own as well.  Hope and Cole were cute too and man was I glad when she finally dumped that no good, pothead Adam.

So while this book isn’t my favorite, there was still a lot to enjoy.  The romance is definitely steamy, the hero is seriously hot and it all does come together in the end so if you can get passed the heroine’s dumb actions in the beginning, I’m sure you’ll enjoy this.
