Review: Faking It by Cora Carmack

Mackenzie “Max” Miller has a problem. Her parents have arrived in town for a surprise visit, and if they see her dyed hair, tattoos, and piercings, they just might disown her. Even worse, they’re expecting to meet a nice, wholesome boyfriend, not a guy named Mace who has a neck tattoo and plays in a band. All her lies are about to come crashing down around her, but then she meets Cade.

Cade moved to Philadelphia to act and to leave his problems behind in Texas. So far though, he’s kept the problems and had very little opportunity to take the stage. When Max approaches him in a coffee shop with a crazy request to pretend to be her boyfriend, he agrees to play the part. But when Cade plays the role a little too well, they’re forced to keep the ruse going. And the more they fake the relationship, the more real it begins to feel.

All her life Max has had to be someone she’s not.  She played the role of perfect daughter but she knew that wasn’t her.  When she made the decision to drop our of college and pursue her music she knew it was the right decision.  Unfortunately her parents don’t know the real Max and if they did they probably wouldn’t like her very much.
Max is at a coffee shop with her boyfriend Mace – the drummer in her band – when she gets a call from her parents.  Because of Mace’s big mouth and a surprise visit Max has to find a “normal” boyfriend and fast.  She approaches Cade – who looks like an all American guy – in the coffee shop and he agrees to play the part of boyfriend in exchange for a date.
Max and Cade – surprisingly – hit it off.  They have to play the role of sweethearts longer than expected when Max’s parents state that they’re there for all of Thanksgiving but this actually allows the pair to get to know each other and they like what they see, which is weird since they normally wouldn’t have given each other a second look.  Unfortunately Cade is getting over the feelings he has for his best friend, Bliss, and Max is dating Mace.
When Max’s parents threaten to cut off the small amount of money they’re sending (it may be a small amount but means a great deal to Max and her livelihood) if she doesn’t get Cade to her house for Christmas she knows their acquaintance will last a bit longer.  Cade agrees but only if Max will go as herself and not as the person she shows her parents whenever she sees them.
This was a really great book.  I wasn’t sure what to expect after Losing It but this was so good. Gritty and emotional while still being fun and funny.  Max and Cade are great together.  They just “get” the other and I loved that about them.  They fit like puzzle pieces, despite their supposed differences.
I was disappointed in the end of the book.  There was a huge emotional scene and then the start of a reconciliation and then we flashed to 3 months later. I kind of felt like I was missing something.  I wanted more about Max and Cade as I felt that there were things unfinished. Maybe it’s just me, IDK.  It was still really good. lol
I would definitely recommend this one, even if you don’t read book 1 I don’t think you’ll be too out of the loop.
