DFRAT: How To Find A Good Read The Frugal Way by Cathleen Ross + a Giveaway

Reading is a personal thing. What suits one reader won’t necessarily suit another, but how do you find that entrancing read that transports you to another world?
The tried and true way is to find an author you love and stick to her. Another way is to read blogs and try some of the free or cheaper indie authors. There are lots of books on Barnes and Noble that are .99 cents to 2.99. If you think about it, that’s not more than a cup of coffee, so yes, it will cost you a little time and money, but it’s worth the risk to expand your reading scope. The link below will take you to inexpensive nook book reads. You’ll also find that some of your favorite authors re-launch books that have been out of print for very reasonable prices. I’ve spent hours reading my favorite authors’ backlists and because I’m a readerholic on a budget, I try to find inexpensive ways to read.
Another way to find inexpensive ebook reads is by perusing facebook. This site recommends reads on a daily basis. It gives you a chance to find newer releases which won’t stretch your budget.
I always read the first chapter of a book before I buy it. That way, I’m not disappointed. If the first chapter catches me, I’m prepared to risk my money. There is always the risk with an indie read that the author hasn’t done the hard yards of learning their craft if they have self-published. Look for tell-tale signs when you read the first chapter of a new author. Is the work full of typos? Has the author hooked you into the story with a compelling start? With the promo, does the plot make sense and is it the type of story you want to read?
Goodreads http://www.goodreads.com/ is another site where you can find out what other people are reading. Readers and authors on this site, often rate what they are reading and write reviews. It gives you a chance to do your research before you spend your hard-earned money.
I hope I’ve given you some handy tips to help you find that compelling book.

  1. Hi Cathleen, thanks for visiting! 🙂

I am BIG on getting recs from my friends and their blogs. I really hesitate to read a book, even if I originally wanted to, if I see a few bad reviews from my friends who I trust. Sometimes I'll cave anyway and buy the book if I'm DYING to read it but most of the time I just don't want to waste my money if I think I might have reservations about it. 🙂

  2. Your book looks great and the cover is hot, a less is more kind of thing. lol

I, too, am a bookaholic and the cost of books can be an issue for me. Amazon has a section with free erotica and I like to try out an author there, then if I mesh with their writing style I will buy his/her other books.

    Thanks,
    Donna
