Digital First Read-A-Thon

Posted March 30, 2012 by Holly in Features | 4 Comments

To bring awareness to some of the awesome books that are available from digital first publishers, I’m organizing a Digital First Read-A-Thon for June.

During that month, all the books read will be from digital first publishers. I’ll compile a list of Digi First Pubs and post it here on the site for reference. I think most of us are familiar with the more popular/well known digital first pubs: Samhain, Ellora’s Cave, Carina Press. Many print publishers now have digital first imprints as well: Loveswept by Random House, InterMix by Penguin, Avon Impulse, etc. There are also a host of smaller, independent pubs.

Contrary to popular belief, ebooks aren’t just smut and erotica. There are some truly stellar novels available on the digital market that are well written and barely contain any sex at all. I think a Read-A-Thon is a great way to bring some of these gems to light.

At this point, the idea is in the thinking stage. I would love feedback from those of you who might be interested in participating. A brief survey:

Do you read digital first books?
If so, how many per month?
If not, would you consider doing so as part of this read-a-thon (why or why not)?

Also, what do you think of the idea? Are you willing to participate?

My plan so far is vague, but falls along the lines of: Make a list of digi first books to read during the month of June (probably via a shelf on Goodreads). Read only digital first books that month. Post about my reads here on the site, Facebook and Twitter (possibly with the hashtag #DFRaT?).

That’s it. I’m not trying to make this (too) complicated.

Any thoughts and suggestions will be welcome. Feel free to email me if you’d prefer that to leaving a comment.

  1. Do you read digital first books?
    Since 2003.

If so, how many per month? Approx. 4.

If not, would you consider doing so as part of this read-a-thon (why or why not)?

I miss some now-defunct epubs (i.e. Hard Shell). I am more familiar with the erotic romance ones, though, as that is how I started reading ebooks back in the day. New Concepts Publishing used to have a nice collection of non erotic time travel and historical-set romances back then (I have every single one of my purchases), though I don’t know how it is now, as they started catering mostly to the erotic romance market.

I’d be interested on participating, though of course, from now until June is 3 months, so I can’t give a 100% commitment at this time.

  2. Yes i read Digi-first pub books 🙂 how many per month? depends on the month probably around 10 or so. I tend to stalk the Amazon top 100 free romance ebooks list.
Samhain and Ellora’s Cave are probably my fav so far of the digi first publishers, I tend to trust the quality of those books more. Carina is quickly making it up to that rank with me as well. But I am definitely open to trying other publishers.
Neat idea, I would definitely be willing to join you 🙂

  3. I do read digital first books. At least 10 a month, sometimes more. And I would definitely be part of this read-a-thon.
Why? On my blog (Reading Reality) I do a Monday feature where I gather the reviews for digital first publishers and I’m only able to scratch the surface.
This is a terrific idea. How can I help?

  4. Do you read digital first books?

Yes. It’s pretty much the only thing I read anymore since getting my Nook 3 years ago.

If so, how many per month?

Per month? Holy crow, let me do some math…. 8-11

I totally want to participate in the read-a-thon, let me know what I can do to help.
