Amber’s life is spinning out of control. All she wants is to turn up the volume on her iPod until all of the demands of family and friends fade away. So she sneaks off to the beach to spend a day by herself. Then Amber meets Cade. Their attraction is instant, and Amber can tell he’s also looking for an escape. Together they decide to share a perfect day: no pasts, no fears, no regrets.
The more time that Amber spends with Cade, the more she’s drawn to him. And the more she’s troubled by his darkness. Because Cade’s not just living in the now—he’s living each moment like it’s his last.
What a great book this turned out to be. I don’t recall ever reading a story written in free verse so I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book when I opened it and found that the whole story was written like one giant poem.
But I loved it!
I loved the story that poured out of this book. The story about Amber and Cade and the different ways that their lives would forever change. Each of them have some big things going on in their lives and today is the day before those big changes happen. Amber needs to get away by herself and to come to terms with what happens tomorrow. She goes away for a day at the beach all by herself (she’s 16) with plans to do whatever she wants for the entire day.
She goes to the aquarium and meets Cade.
She’s interested in Cade because he looks troubled and she realizes after talking to him that he understands how she feels, even if he doesn’t know what she’s going through.
Cade asks Amber to spend the day together, no questions asked about the past, the present or the future. A day filled with fun and laughter which is exactly what Amber needs right now so she agrees. They spend the day asking no questions, just enjoying each other’s company and flipping a penny that Cade found on the floor (because he could use the luck) to decide what activities they would do as the day wore on.
The whole story takes place over the course of one day. It’s amazing how little time is needed for someone to connect with another person. Cade and Amber connect on a level that is insane and yet totally sweet. Over the course of the day, Amber and Cade come to care for each other and when the day is over and secrets are revealed and shoulders are cried on, they both set out to deal with their separate problems knowing that even though their lives are about to change, they’re strong enough to deal with the changes and their better people for having met each other.
Lisa Schroeder did a great job of pulling me along with this story. She did a fantastic job of sucking me right into both Amber and Cade’s world. She made them so real to me and I ate every word up. This is a fantastically written story about two people dealing with things that are bigger than them and leaning on each other just because they need to. I loved this story and am eager to read more stories by Schroeder. Goodness, this story was great!
..and that’s your scoop!
