Holly‘s review of Animal Magnetism (Sunshine, Idaho, Book 1) by Jill Shalvis

This alpha male is going to bring out her wild side…

Sunshine, Idaho, is a small and sunny town—the perfect home for man and beast. Well, maybe not for man, as pilot-for-hire Brady Miller discovers when his truck is rear-ended by what appears to be Noah’s Ark.

The co-owner of the town’s only kennel, Lilah Young has good reason to be distracted behind the wheel—there are puppies, a piglet, and a duck in her Jeep. But, she doesn’t find it hard to focus on the angry, gorgeous stranger she’s collided with.

Lilah has lived in Sunshine all her life, and though Brady is just passing through, he has her abandoning her instincts and giving in to a primal desire. It’s Brady’s nature to resist being tied down, but there’s something about Lilah and her menagerie—both animal and human—that keeps him coming back for more…

The start of another great series from Shalvis. I adored the animal shelter setting and the main characters.

Brady spent a few too many years in the military doing Special Ops. Now that he’s out, he flies a helicopter for hire into dangerous situations. He does his best to avoid emotional ties, but he can’t help the ones to his foster brothers. When they ask him to come home to restore a helicopter for them, he can’t refuse. But he plans to be in town only long enough to see it done, then he’s out of there.

Lilah isn’t looking for love. She’s too busy running her animal shelter, finishing school and guarding her heart. But she wouldn’t turn down a few hot and sweaty encounters with a member of the opposite sex. When she realized Brady isn’t planning to stick around, she figures he’s the perfect candidate. He’s sin on a stick, and a temporary fling is just what the doctor ordered. Neither counted on their attraction growing into something else..something more. But the real question is can either of them set aside their fears to admit how they feel?

Lilah was burned once and decided she didn’t want to risk her heart again – not that she was really given an opportunity since she had to take care of her ailing grandmother. It was interesting that it wasn’t just a broken heart that caused her to close herself off. It was also the humiliation of failing at her dreams…the dreams she wanted more than anything. Putting yourself out there after failing is hard enough, but doing so when your failure was so public is excruciating.

Brady has his own issues that stem from a childhood of foster homes and no real connections or roots. Not only is he a war hero and helicopter pilot, but he’s also a photographer. There’s something seriously sexy about a man with a camera. Add to that his desire to make Lilah happy, his sense of responsibility and the fact that he’s sexy as hell and my hormones perked right up. But he had depth, too. He was far from perfect. His refusal to put down roots and his sense of disconnect with the immediate world surrounding him made him fallible.

The cast of secondary characters – both human and animal – really added to the story. Brady’s “brothers”, Lilah’s best friends and animals, Brady’s dog..I adored them all. I’m anxious for the series to continue.

Lilah was open and honest. Brady was strong and caring. Together they had enough chemistry to blow up a small country. I loved it.

4.5 out of 5
