Casee‘s review of Exposure by Susan Andersen.
A tragic past forces Emma to flee to smalltown Port Flannery in Washington state. Sheriff Elvis Donnelly is also the victim of a brutal past. When Elvis and Emma meet, the attraction is instant. But when someone else arrives in town, these two outsiders are soon sharing more than the heat of desire–they’re sharing a fight for their lives.
This may be my favorite Susan Andersen novel. Everything about it was wonderful. The characters, the plots, the realism. I don’t think there was anything I didn’t like about this book. Out of everything I loved in this book, Gracie was what I loved most. Susan Andersen writes an extremely believable three year old. There have been so many books with children (of various ages) that aren’t depicted in a way that a child of that age should be. Often times, I get pulled out of a book when that is the case.
I didn’t really care for Emma b/c I’m not into the whole southern accent thing. The grammar and punctuation usually throws me. While it did throw me at first, I ended up getting used to it and rarely noticed after the first few chapters.
Emma was a wonderful heroine. She was brash and bold, but not offensive. Emma was an independent woman and a mother that was fiercely protective of her child. I loved how she was so oblivious to Elvis’s faults.
Even after they decide to get involved, it’s not an easy relationship. Emma is running from a man that is obsessed with her. He has been a father figure to her for most of her life and recently found out that he wasn’t what she thought he was. Getting involved with anyone while she is on the run isn’t something that she planned on doing, but she can’t resist Elvis.
Since he moved back home from Seattle and took the position as Sheriff, Elvis has still been on the outside. Growing up with his mother as the town whore didn’t make his life easy. He never thought he would want to come back home, but it is where he ends up. Emma and Grace give him a sense of family that he has never had before. All he has to do is keep Emma from running.
Elvis is my favorite SA hero. Even with a name like Elvis.
5 out of 5.
This book is available from Zebra. You can buy it here.
Elvis is my all-time favorite hero – hence needing to agree with you here – and why I went back and bought her back list and kept up with her for many more years. Yup, absolutely adore Elvis 🙂
I adore this book. Abso-freaking-lutely adore it! Elvis..oh how I love him. I’m going to have to go re-read this again.
The accent thing never bothered me, but then I don’t mind a southern accent.
What Holly said. Love this book.
I am reading Exposure at this moment and its really annoying that I do not have more time to read because i am loving the book. Its one of those books where i love both the heroine and the hero and the secondary characters, which does not always happen.
The hype on this book is very well deserved.
I recall really liking this book. It’s been ages since I read it.
There was one thing in it that I was a little uncomfortable with – it was a scene where (IIRC) Elvis was looking after the little girl and he took her with him to the bathroom when he needed to relieve himself – I may have got that a bit wrong but it was something along those lines.
He didn’t do anything hinky but I did get a bit of the icks about it.
I do remember Elvis very fondly and I did really enjoy the book.
