Casee‘s review of Indiscreet by Carolyn Jewel.

Edward, Marquess of Foye, would have been happy to continue his life as an unmarried gentleman rake, until his brother’s death changes everything. As the last of his line Edward must now marry. Having already had his heart broken by a capricious young girl, he vows to find an older woman who is seasoned, mature…and no threat to his feelings. Then he meets a woman who will require him to risk everything for their love.

I read Scandal and was blown away by it. To say that I loved it would be an understatement. So it was with great expectation that I picked up Indiscreet. I was hugely disappointed. It wasn’t the characters that I had a problem with. It was how they went from point A to point B to point Z. The whole thing just didn’t work for me.

Sabine Goddard was the source of some vicious gossip almost two years before. Even though it was untrue, Sabine and her uncle left England. Though she told her uncle that none of it was true, she knows he never believed her. Since then, Sabine has devoted herself to helping her uncle with his writing research.

The Marquess of Foye was present the night that the rumor about Sabine started. He knew the man that started it and eventually he learned the reason why. When he comes across Sabine thousands of miles from England, he is bemused. He had never thought to see her again, let alone that far away from home. He decides to tell her why his former friend, Crosshaven, did what he did to ruin Sabine.

The book started out well enough. It started falling apart for me when Sabine and Foye decided they were in love. It seemed so abrupt. After being jilted by the woman he loved, Foye was supposedly heartbroken. Up until the time he “realizes” he’s in love with Sabine, he’s telling himself that he will never fall in love again. Sabine isn’t necessarily against love, but she believes that Foye is seeking her out strictly b/c he believes the rumor (before she knows the truth behind it). I had a hard time accepting how fast she fell in love with him.

I have to admit that I was somewhat bored while reading. It was only toward the end that the book started picking up for me. Then it was almost too much. First, Sabine was declared dead. Then Foye was declared dead. It was all wrong of course, but it was just too much.

3.5 out of 5.
