Rowena’s reviews of Twisted Creek by Jodi Thomas.

Hero: Luke Morgan
Heroine: Allie Daniels
Grade: 4.5 out of 5

Bad luck has been biting at Allie Daniel’s heels all her life, so when she inherits a café in a small Texas lake community she’s sure there’s a catch. But Allie decides to move and brings her grandmother along, since the café gives Nana a chance to do what she loves best-cook. As Allie settles in, she soon discovers that she’s not alone anymore-and that sometimes, the only cure for bad luck is gaining the courage to love.

This was a good book.

I’m a big fan of small town/community stories and this is one of those. I loved getting to know the people or the Nesters of Twisted Creek but most of all, I really enjoyed getting to know Allie. I thought she was a great heroine and I enjoyed watching her find her feet in this new town with her Nana at her side.

Throughout the entire book, I kept wondering just who Uncle Jefferson was because Allie didn’t know him. Was it a mistake? Is Allie’s bad luck going to come back and bite her in the ass? I had no clue and Jodi Thomas wrote a fascinating story about a small town of Nesters who came together and formed this bond that was stronger than anything anyone could throw at them. They stuck together, they helped each other out and they were just good to one another. They were a family. I really enjoyed getting to know each and every single one of them. Even stinky Willie. =)

The romance between Luke and Allie was kind of a background story but I didn’t mind that at all. All those teasing kisses between these two was enough to keep me wanting to read the rest of the book to see what will happen when Allie finds out just what Luke’s been up to, who Luke really is and all that. She thought he was a criminal and still she was all up in his grill, kissing the heck out of him. Their relationship was cute and Luke was sexy. Very, very sexy.

I enjoyed reading about Luke. I enjoyed getting to know him and learning what he was about. He was a good, solid man who wanted to find out some answers. He was such a man’s man and I found him utterly delicious. I want my own Luke, just like this Luke. The things that made me soften toward him was the little things he did for everyone in Twisted Creek. I loved that he was always near when someone was giving Allie beef and I loved his reaction to Allie’s mother. I loved how he stood up for her and was there for Allie. The way he was with Nana made me all gooey inside for him because he was just a fantastic hero.

Allie’s character was my favorite in the entire book. I thought she was a great heroine who took care of her grandmother and had the same worries that I do. Will there be enough money to pay our bills this month? Am I doing all that I can to help my daughter out? The only difference between Allie and me were she’s taking care of her grandmother and I’m taking care of my daughter. Her character leaped right off the pages for me. I enjoyed getting to know her and I enjoyed seeing the growth in her character and in her self confidence as the story progressed. She was a definite winner for me and I wish she was my best friend.

The whole book was a definite treat for me. It’s been a long time since I read a book that gripped me the way that this book did but what’s funny is that this book wasn’t one of those good books that hits you upside the head with how good it is. It was the kind of book that was slow to unfold but not in a boring way. It was more of feel good, happy to get to know everyone kind of way.

What would make this book even better was a follow up story about the relationship (is it a friendship or something more) between Paul and Mary Ann. That would totally make my day. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to everyone that wants a solid, great story. This book was a definite treat for me and I’m sure it will be for you as well!

This book is available from Penguin. You can buy it here or here in e-format.

  1. I love this book and like you, I love small community/town storylines… this is one of the best I’ve ever read 😀 Really love all the characters’ interactions.

There is going to be more books set in Twisted Creek or around… well at least, that’s what I heard 😀

  2. I love this book so much. It makes me feel warm and cozy inside. Jodi Thomas has such a way with atmosphere. Her small town descriptions actually make me teary. 🙂 Nice to see you recommending this one.

  3. Completely agree with your review. nath was the one that recommend Twisted Creek (thanks nath!). I’m hoping we’ll get more set in the same world sooner rather than later.

  4. I’ve read some good reviews of this book so I think I’m definitely going to have to read it! Great review Wena. 😛

  5. Hey Rowena… Okay, perhaps it’s not really going to be a follow up, but last year, I did an interview with Jodi Thomas for BB…

Q: Are you planning a follow-up book to Twisted Creek? Will Mary Lynn and Paul get their own story?

I’m creating a community of small towns in west Texas . All I can say now is characters from both Twisted Creek and Rewriting Monday will walk through future stories.

I really enjoyed this book but it wasn’t like this BAM in your face good read. It was a smooth read that I thought was too cute for words!

Nath, you really did hear that? Where at? I went to Jodi’s site but it’s outdated (hasn’t been updated since about April) so I couldn’t find much over there but I really hope that what you heard is true.

    Ames,
