Review: The Rancher’s Surprise Marriage by Susan Crosby

Cattle rancher Tony Young was seeing stars. Movie idol Maggie McShane—America’s Sweetheart—had just asked him to marry her! It was a strictly temporary business arrangement. But ever since they shared a dance and a night of incredible lovemaking, Tony wanted the pleasure of something a little more…permanent.

From the moment she met the sexy cowboy, Maggie knew he was the answer to her wedding woes. But when the charade ended, would they have to call the whole thing off? Or, with the Taka-Hanson Hotel throwing them the biggest wedding ever, could Maggie and Tony turn their sham marriage into a forever kind of love?

This was a really cute story. The night Maggie’s fiance dumps her for someone else she meets up with Tony Young in a bar and they share a night together. Because she’s in the public eye and considered America’s Sweetheart, she knew her broken engagement was going to be especially bad for her image. When pictures of her and Tony surface kissing – before news of her engagement had leaked – she takes drastic measures and asks Tony to marry her. He agrees.

To be honest, I’m not exactly sure why he agreed, but he did. He’s definitely attracted to Maggie and I think he wanted to help her out of her jam, but other than that I’m not sure he had another motive.

This book kind of got off to a bumpy start, but after the first few chapters things smoothed out and I really enjoyed it. Maggie was a great character. Though she’s a movie star she isn’t stuck-up for haughty. She grew up with strict grandparents after her parents died and they made sure she had morals and values. She was just an average ordinary woman who just happened to be a movie star. I liked that she didn’t shy away from Tony or try to run when she realized she had feelings for him.

Tony was commitment shy, but mostly that stemmed from issues he had with his father and his failed first marriage. Once he made the commitment to marry Maggie he stuck to it, though, and made the best of it. They agreed to stay together for a few months until things settled down with the press and then they’ll quietly divorce. But Tony doesn’t treat the marriage like it’s temporary, not even in the beginning. He made the deal and wanted to stick with it. I liked that.

The issues he had with his dad were kind of glossed over in the end, I think. They talked about it and then..that was it. It seemed like it was a pretty trite way to clear up 20 years worth of baggage.

Otherwise I thought this was a great read. Tony and Maggie had excellent chemistry and I really enjoyed the setting.
