Reading in Bed

So I know I’ve posted this one before but I just got to thinking about a conversation that Lisa and Rosie and I had this past weekend. We were talking about the Ebookwise and how it was great to have the backlight (I’m sure other ereaders do too but I happened to have mine with me and was demonstrating) so I could read in bed without bugging my husband. Lisa’s hubby G agreed that it was quite handy. Rosie’s hubby thought it was a brilliant idea because if she’s staying up late to read a book she has to leave the bedroom as to not disturb GG.

Anyway….it made me think of this cartoon so I looked it up and thought I’d share it again. I’m sure we can all relate! lol

So, do you read in bed and does it drive your SO crazy???

  1. I have a lamp by the side of my bed which isn’t too bright. Hub does get rather annoyed if I read too late, thought. He huffs and turns over with sharp, jerky movements and then I know it’s definitely time to turn off the light!

I want one of those little lights that you clip onto your book (or Cybook in my case). Has anyone had an experience of those? Are they worth getting?

  2. LOL Funny you should mention the book light. I have one which my hubby is not bothered by at all. According to Rosie’s hubby (I think it was him) the book light is just as bright as the lamp and should be tossed across the room! lol

I just got my booklight at Borders. I think most big bookstores have them.

  3. That was my G. One of the worst fights we ever had was over that goddamn itty bitty book light. I believe I may have pitched it across the room in a moment of…uh…madness and it…er…no longer bothered him after that.

    Heh.

  4. I usually don’t read in bed only because I can’t seem to get comfortable. My spot is on the loveseat. It’s sad, I read so much that I actually have to rotate the cushions because one always looks flatter, lol.

I have the Sony reader, and although I love it, it doesn’t have a backlight :/

  5. I read in bed every night. It doesn’t bother the hubby because he isn’t there! He stays up later than I do. I’m in bed pretty early. If he wants to see me he knows where I am, but he can’t stay until I’m asleep. Sometimes he stays and if he does then he’ll watch tv.

  6. Oh Lisa I’m sorry…I thought that was Rosie’s hubby that didn’t like the booklight. My bad!

Barbara – I don’t know what I’d do without my backlight! Truly.

Amy…that’s one way to work it. I’ve recently started going in where my hubby is watching tv so he won’t be lonely…he just recently mentioned this was an issue for him. Ahhhh communication, ain’t it grad? lol

  7. I guess I am lucky in that my guy can sleep through ANYTHING. Comes from growing up in Africa, I think…huge extended family, people making noise at all hours, little privacy, idk. Light, noise, whatever…he can fall asleep. So I just use the bedside lamp to read until I’m ready to sleep. 🙂

  8. I read in bed, but fortunately, so does my husband. We have very little in common, so thank goodness for books. LOL

We do occasionally argue when I want to stay up reading and he wants to sleep. Or…not sleep.

  9. My husband can sleep thru anything. I actually worry about it more than he does. I’m a night owl (read: insomniac) and he has to be up at 5:30 am. I tell him I’m fine with reading out in the living room so that my lamp won’t bother him, but he’d rather I be in there with him with the light on, and he’ll sleep thru it.

The only time there’s a problem, is when it’s like 3 am and he finds me still awake, reading. And really, I’m the one who gets annoyed, because he wakes up and tells me, “Go to sleep. It’s late.” As. If. I. Didn’t. Know. lol

  10. That’s so awesome Sula. My hubby doesn’t get bothered by the book light but I think the lamp would do him in.

Jenb – that is very cool that you have books in common. What types of books does he read?

Renee – omg you make me laugh. That is so what my hubby would do…even with the book light. Duh I know what time it is buddy! lol

  11. My husband reads mostly Urban Fantasy, high fantasy, shoot-’em-up Westerns, and a little bit of sci-fi space opera too. I’ve even gotten him to read a few of the crossover authors whose books are sometimes shelved as paranormal romance–LKH, Jeaniene Frost, Patricia Briggs, etc.

Books are one of only a handful of things we have in common, so we make the most of it. Our evening reading time is a nice ritual.

  12. Thank heavens for my ebookwise! It’s how I read at night. Of course, if I happen to be in the middle of a particularly good PB, well, he just has to roll over. Aren’t I sweet and thoughtful?

  13. So I came rushing in to defend GG but I see Lisa already clarified things. I end up in the LR because I feel guilty if I’m reading real, real late. GG has to get up an hur earlier than I do. Like Sula’s guy GG can sleep through anything and prefers I stay in bed next to him. Ahhhhh! Isn’t he sweet?

  14. Your G is sweet, Rosie. And my G is too. DAmn he puts up with a lot (flash to my whiny, it’s so cold will you go get my coat? moment in the hotel. heh) but he needs his beauty rest. I just go out in the lr and curl up on my big comfy couch. 🙂

the itty bitty book light would be GREAT otherwise.

  15. Jen that’s so cool that your hubby will read some of the cross over authors. My hubby has to be forced to pick up a book and even if he did it would NEVER have romance in it.

Lori – I agree. Although John has put up with the lamp he prefers not to.

Rosie! Ask your G to forgive me please!! I was getting my G’s mixed up! lol You know when you talk about as much stuff as we did this past weekend it’s amazing I kept ANYTHING straight! 🙂

Lb – The Coat thing was a classic moment. Your man is such a sweetie!

  16. LOL, I guess this is the joy of still being single, nobody to bother and the bed to yourself 🙂

I read in bed a LOT. LOL, not just before going to sleep, but on the week-end, if I’m reading, then it’ll be in bed…

Note to self: another criteria to add to my list of perfect man… one that won’t be bothered by lamp at night 😛

  17. Tracy, too right about that coat moment being classic. I know! Let’s never forget it and torture Leeeesah with it forever. Sound like a plan?

Nathie, your list for the perfect man has go to be getting quite lengthy. Of course you’ll meet someone and “the list” will fall by the wayside and you’ll wonder why you ever thought you needed it. 😉

  18. Oh Nath your list will be huge! lol I don’t think there’s any way to find a man with all the character traits we want all wrapped into one! 🙂

Rosie – Torture Lisa…I’m all over it! 🙂 But in the kindest way possible. lol

  19. MM falls into the “I want you to stay in bed with me and read” category, but like many others here I feel guilty. Not just b/c of the light (which, with my eBookwise I don’t have to worry about) but also because I move around a lot when I’m reading.

I have a small purse light I bought that I use sometimes, but it’s just as bright as a lamp. My daughter recently got a booklight from Borders and it has a blue tinge. Sometimes if I’m reading late in bed I’ll use that and it doesn’t bother MM at all.

I do think not having a backlight is the biggest drawback to the other eReaders available on the market. I realize the e-ink technology makes it less problematic, but you still have to have a light to read. With the eBookwise you don’t. It’s also great for reading in the car.
