Some Feedback Please

Posted July 11, 2008 by Holly in Discussions, Reviews | 21 Comments

We’ve been trying to get things more organized around here and we’re curious about your thoughts.

With the new “scheduling” feature for blogger, I think we’ve managed to alleviate a lot of the “dead” time we had on the blog, but I wonder if we’re posting too much? We try for at least two reviews a day (sometimes three) and then at least one random non-review post. Is this working for you? Loving it, hating it, don’t care one way or the other? Have any other suggestions?

On weekends (or whenever) I try to post newsletters or sale flyers (flyer’s? Fliers? You get what I mean, right?) I receive from various publishers/book sellers. It’s a huge pain in the arse, though, because I’m html stupid and can’t ever figure out how to code them properly so they aren’t cut off at the bottom, or too wide for the screen. How do you feel about the posts in general? Do you like that I post them? Or would you prefer that I don’t? I’ll spend the extra time making sure they look right on the site if y’all like that I post them. If not I’m just going to give it up….

We’re thinking about starting a new series of posts about eBooks and eReaders. Perhaps to spotlight the various Readers that are available and the pros and cons of buying in print vs. e-format. Is that something you think you’d be interested in? It wouldn’t be something we’d do on a set schedule, but maybe a post a week? Or maybe even a post a month? Personally I think e-technology is fascinating, but I know not everyone shares my passion for it. We wouldn’t want to bore you all. 😛

I think that’s about it for now. Anything else you want to mention? Feel free to leave a comment or send us an email. We’re here for you… ;0)

  1. To be honest – I’m not a fan of the too frequent posts – I don’t mean yours – I mean in general. I don’t get to every blog I like every day, so with too many posts, I worry about missing something good.
I’d be fine with just one review a day and maybe one general life kind of post.

  2. What kristie(j) said.

If I were to average my perfect posting schedule for most blogs, it would be a maximum of ten posts per week, in whichever combination works for the blogger.

On the fliers and sales: I’m in favor, personally. After much resistance–me, a Luddite, nice meetin’ ya–I’m starting to hear the siren’s call of e-readers. Help!

    Have a great weekend, ladies!

  3. I have to be honest. I don’t read all the reviews you post. I usually skim them, unless it is a book that catches my eye or one I was previously interested in. I just don’t have time to read them all. I like when you post a general post or a rant. I always read those. I haven’t really been paying attention to the fliers, but that doesn’t mean I won’t in the future. Also, I would like to know more about e-readers and what features they offer. I am pretty much in the dark about it. I would love to learn more.

The most important thing for you ladies to remember is that this is your blog. You should just do whatever you want to do. I will still keep coming back 🙂

  4. With all your great book recommendations my TBR pile is toppling – and I live in earthquake country! aaaa! I say blog as much as you want to. I’ll be here to read it. 😉 Note: I love the author interviews and I adored Pleasure Unbound. THANK YOU!!!

  5. I really enjoy your blog.

Probably one or two reviews a day and a general post if there’s something to say would be my ideal, but I’ll be happy with whatever you decide.

I have to admit I don’t think the flyers made a big impression on me as I don’t remember one, so not fussed either way there.

As a convert to ebooks I’m always interested in posts on ebooks and ereaders (and also more general devices that can be used as ereaders).

  6. M.

I check in once a day or every other day, so if there are a lot of posts may miss some. It seems to me that how you structure your blog depends more on you and what you’re trying to achieve – for instance, if you post so often that there is not much chance of readers getting a response to posts left you might eventually weed out those readers to visit blogs for a bit of comment chat. You might be more traffic from people who lurk only.

  7. I’m been lurking for some time, and I like this blog as it is currently.

I’ve been into eBooks for about a month now, so anything about them would definately interest me. To get books instantly really rocks. And I found Books on Board from this blog. Thank you!

As for how many posts a day, or what type of posts one should have on his/her blog, I have no preference, it’s all up to the blogger’s style. Some blogs only have reviews, some have reviews and rants, some only have rants, all worked for me.

Of course, I like a blog that’s often updated. 🙂 For reasons for being able to keep up, once a day, or once every two days is good enough.

    Happy reading!

    What Jill said.

I have noticed the posts getting more and more frequent. I personally don’t have enough time to read all the reviews unless it’s something that really catches my eye, which is a shame, cause I get some of my best recs from you guys. But… go ahead and post ’em. I can always come back when there’s time.

As for fliers, well… I apparently get the same emails you do, so it doesn’t matter to me personally if you post them, LOL!

  9. Hey!
I think you guys are running a great blog! And I would first and foremost say stick with whatever amuses and interests you.

Alas, I, too don’t always get here every day, and if there are a lot of reviews, I have to pick as I’m one who doesn’t have time to read them all. Though I always read your commentary and other features. I would certainly be interested in the ereader evaluations. I have never found a really central source of these, so I think it would be cool!

The fliers, I suppose I look at them but my book buying habits are rather dull, so I never use the info.

  10. I really love your site, I find new books to read because of you. I like a post a day, but that’s just me. I’ll be here lurking whatever you do.

  11. I’m with everyone else who is telling you that this is YOUR site and you should entertain/amuse yourselves FIRST and foremost. Do that, and your audience will find you.

I admit that I don’t read many of your reviews only because a large portion of them are about books that aren’t my flavor. So, for me, other than the occasional book review that IS of interest to me, I track your site in Google Reader because I enjoy the non-review posts.

Oh, and as for those pesky flier cut-offs, I am a new convert to mini scroll boxes. I would think the html code I use in Blogger to set them up would also work in WP. The best part is that the scrollboxes don’t display unless the pic/words are longer than the height you set for the box. I *think* you automatically get one for the width too, but I haven’t had cause to test that yet.

  12. How funny. I was just telling Daphne that your posting schedule seemed to have revved up a lot lately. Personally, I skim in my feed reader because I just don’t have the time, and if it’s a non-review post, I’ll usually look at the title and a couple of paragraphs to see if it’s something that interests me. Still, I’m all for having lots of reviews in a blog because when I finish a book, I often like to look up archives to see what other people thought. Also, after even the briefest of skimming, titles and authors will stick to my head, and if another friend recommends a book I remember, then I’m more likely to read it. And finally, like many others have already mentioned, I vote for the option that keeps you guys happy bloggers.

  13. Hi Holly and Book Bingers! Yours is THE first site I go to in my blog feeder every time I open it. I like your reviews as they are diverse in subgenres and while I don’t read some, I’m sure the ones I don’t read do appeal to others. Honestly, I don’t read much about fictionwise or other weekend things because I get that in my email. I do like if there’s a special contest on the publisher’s site such as the bag of books one. I also like the random personal posts as you guys rock.

I say keep on doing what you’re doing as I really like it.

  14. hi everyone!!

I find everything really interesting, discussions, rants, reviews and so on… however, I might consider posting a bit less in one day. Perhaps one review a day should be enough? 🙂 my two cents…

  15. I have noticed that lately the amount of daily posts have gone up. I only get around to visiting blogs a few times a week (mainly the weekends) so most of the time when I stop here I feel like I’ve missed so much. BUT I can always go to the archives to catch up. The only time I feel like I’m late to the party is when there is a good discussion that I completely miss out on.

And I do skim the flyers and upcoming book lists to see if something catches my eye.

That said, I agree with those who’ve said that this is your blog. Whatever works for you all works for me. 🙂

  16. Seneca

When it comes to reviews, I do read them, but I check first to see who posted it. I hate spoilers, so I tend to pass over the review if I plan to read the books (Depending on who is reviewing it)

I really have nothing to add, because I think you ladies do a wonderful job with everything here.

  17. I have you guys on Google Reader, so it means that if I haven’t checked in for few days, and you have lots of posts up, I tend to put off reading them, until I can be arsed. And then I tend to skim, due to lack of time, which in turn means that I don’t click onto the actual site.

One time, I didn’t read your blog for a full week, and there were 57 posts on there, when I finally got round to checking you guys out. Just way too much for me. Although, those numbers seem tame when compared to the posts at TGTBTU.

I’m only interested in reviews and commentary. I take absolutely no notice of flyer-type posts.

Personally, I would prefer just two posts a day, anything more, puts me into avoidance mode, but as the saying goes, it’s your blog…

  18. Thanks all. We really appreciate the time you all took to give us your thoughts.

We’re taking everything under advisement. I basically got that less is more, right? I can dig that. 😛
