Update: Contest Alert: Calling All Jane Austen Fans!

Posted April 30, 2008 by Rowena in Giveaways | 17 Comments

It’s Springtime and we here at Book Binge as well as our friends over at Sourcebooks thought it would be fun to celebrate spring by giving away some fantastic Jane Austen sequels written by some great authors of our time.

Sourcebooks has said that Jane Austen’s witty dialogue and sweet scenes of romance have captured fans for generations, and inspired many an author to continue her stories into new dilemmas, new social situations, new loves—true celebrations of all things Jane!

So we thought that it would be a great idea to give away, 5 DIFFERENT COPIES of some Jane Austen sequels, which include:

* The Pemberley Chronicles by Rebecca Collins
* Old Friends and New Fancies by Sybil G. Brinton
* Letters from Pemberley by Jane Dawkins
* More Letters from Pemberley by Jane Dawkins
* Emma and Knightley by Rachel Billington

Now here’s what you gotta do in order to win a free copy of one of these books:

UPDATE!!!

I can’t believe none of y’all have read Jane Austen. What is the matter with you people? Cryin all night in a bucket of dirty water! But, ok, I can understand. It’s daunting, sometimes, to pick up a classic when there are so many new, nifty books around, right? So, here’s what we’re going to do:

For those of you who have read Jane Austen, see below for your instructions.

For those of you who haven’t: Leave a comment here telling us why you haven’t read JA yet and what book of hers you’d like to read.

And I suggest all of you join Sarah’s A Year of Jane Reading Challenge.

– Holly

I’m pretty ashamed to admit to this but it must be done…I, Rowena of Book Binge, lover of all things romance have never read a Jane Austen novel before. I know, shocking, right? It’s true. I want to start reading the books but I don’t know where to start, so that’s where you lovely readers come in. All you gotta do to win one of the books above is comment on this blog post and choose my first Jane Austen book to read. Now, you must choose my first JA novel but you must also include in your comment why I must read it. Did the book make your heart go pitter patter in your chest? Did the hero make you swoon with delight over something so romantic that he said? I want to know why I should read the book you chose and I will be picking 5 different entries to win one of the books mentioned above.

So, that’s 5 books for 5 readers and all you gotta do is tell me which Jane Austen book I should begin my Jane Austen reading adventure with and why you chose that book for me. We will run this contest all week long to give you guys ample time to consider your choices. All entries must be in by Friday, May 2, 2008 at 7pm, PST. The winners will be announced on Saturday, May 3, 2008 at noon.

So what Jane Austen novel is it going to be, ladies? I can’t wait to see those entries. Good luck to everyone and thanks again to Sourcebooks for helping us out with this awesome contest.

Happy Thinking! =)

Guest Review: Breathless by Laura Lee Guhrke

Posted April 30, 2008 by Book Binge Guest Blogger in Reviews | 4 Comments

Nath‘s guest review of Breathless by Laura Lee Guhrke, published by Pocket Books in July 1999.

I’ve been on a Laura Lee Guhrke kick lately, so after Not So Innocent, here is my review of Breathless 🙂 I’ve seen Breathless and The Charade around, I even own a copy of The Charade, but for some reasons, I never felt like reading them. Perhaps it’s because the setting is in America instead of Europe… I finally did read Breathless… and what did I think?

Lily Morgan may be Shivaree, Georgia’s most talked-about lady. Everyone in town knows about the bitter breakup of her marriage five years before, when Daniel Walker, her husband’s tough, uncompromising lawyer, tore her reputation to shreds and left her with nothing but a wish to get even. But now something about Daniel makes her blood boil and her pulse quicken . . . not with righteous fury, but with passion.

Daniel has returned to Shivaree to once again match wits with Lily Morgan. The thought of a rematch with Lily delights him, for he has never forgotten her hot temper–or her lovely looks. But when a shocking murder shakes the town, Daniel joins Lily to find a killer, and their unexpected partnership sparks something between them they never expected–desire. Now Daniel, the strong-willed lawyer for whom winning is everything, realizes he must win the one reward he can’t live without: Lily’s forgiveness–and her love.

Exceprt available here.

This was such a great read! I really, really enjoyed this book 🙂 The storyline goes as followed: Daniel is a lawyer with political ambitions. Indeed, he wants to present himself for the next senator election… this would go to prove how much he has achieved in life, how successful he has become and how far he has come from his humble beginnings. The wealthiest man of Atlanta is ready to give Daniel his support; however, there’s a price. Daniel must go to Shivaree and convince the judge to re-open Shiravee’s Gentlemen Club (read high class brothel), one of his most profitable sources of money. Problem is that Lily Morgan stands in his way. Five years ago, Lily lost all of her respectability when her husband asked for divorce and accused her of adultery. Thus, every year on the date of her divorce, Lily goes to the judge and ask for the Gentleman Club to be closed… finally, she has gotten what she wished for and she’s not about to let Daniel Walker, the one who contributed to ruin her life, re-open it.

Lily Morgan was such an enjoyable heroine. She’s a very strong woman who stands up for herself. She has a short temper and flaws that she acknowledged and once she’s determined to do something, she puts all her energy into it. I really liked her… I felt so bad that nobody believed her and everyone treated her so badly. I almost cried, because it was so unfair. The only thing I didn’t like was that Lily cared too much about what others thought and how she wanted back her respectability. After what she went through, she must have known that it didn’t matter, that’s respectability from those people is not worth it. I understand why she wanted it, but I thought she’s been through so much… that she didn’t need it.

As for Daniel Walker, he’s the typical hero – kid of the town’s drunk who achieved great things. He’s very focused on what he wants and a bit selfish as well. He doesn’t seem to ever look back… I liked how throughout the book, he became a bit more compassionate and started doubting himself over some actions. I mean, it’s good to be confident; however, it’s better to be sure that you’ve done nothing wrong in your life and be confident 😛

As for the story, I like how packed it was and how fast it moved. I mean, the book wasn’t just about Lily and Daniel falling in love or the re-opening of the club. There were actually a lot of things happening and it added suspense to the book. It added layers to the book in my opinion. I also liked how Lily and Daniel got to know each other before falling in love with each other and also, how their feelings didn’t change overnight. Seriously, Lily was right to resent Daniel abot the divorce… My only complaint is the part where Lily and Daniel finally got together was a bit short, although it did fit the storyline well.

All in all, a great book: great characters and storyline 🙂

My Grade: 4.25/5

The Desert Island Keeper Book Tour

Posted April 30, 2008 by Tracy in Promotions | 12 Comments

So a couple of my blogger/book friends and a few of their blogger/book friends all got together last night and decided to go sailing, or yachting, whichever the case may be. Anyway, they seemed to have been shipwrecked and left on this island to fend for themselves…with a wet bar and cabana boy, I’m sure.

So they each were able to keep 6 books with them and none of the friends could have the same books.

Check out their blogs to see what great books they each decided to take with them. The legal ones and of course the illegal contraband.

Enjoy their selections and feel free to add yourself as a stowaway!!
Alright so I’ve decided to join the land lubbers – I mean who can resist the cabana boy?
My picks:

1. Heir to the Shadows by Anne Bishop
What can I say? Everything about this book just pulled me in and it’s something I can read over and over.

2. Queen of the Darkness by Anne Bishop
If I’ve got book 2 I have to have book 3! The love and romance that poured from this book was amazing. If you haven’t read the Black Jewels Trilogy you are definitely missing a great Fantasy/romance read.

3. Lord of the Fading Lands by C.L. Wilson
I’m usually a straight romance kinda girl and don’t usually go for the whole fantasy thing but this was highly recommended and was an incredible world to fall into.

4. Wicked Deeds on a Winter’s Night by Kresley Cole
Bowen & Mari…how could I NOT bring this book!

5. Unleash the Night by Sherrilyn Kenyon
*sigh* what can I say…Wren. *sigh* Just love him. He had such a sheltered life with people who just didn’t care about him enough to really look at him.

6. Winterbourne by Susan Carroll
Melyssan & Jaufre…He loves her despite her physical handicap…she loves him and calms the angry warrior. Just a wonderful historical!

Review: Taking the Heat by Kathryn Shay

Posted April 30, 2008 by Casee in Reviews | 4 Comments

Book description:

Liam O’Neil is trying to take care of his troubled seven-year-old son and cocky teenager, and work full time at the family-owned Bailey’s Irish Pub. Widowed three years ago, he’s ready to date again (at the insistence of his brothers). But his life is in flux, his future unclear, when he meets Sophie Tyler, a female in the Fire Department of New York. A consummate firefighter who was rescued herself by the FDNY when she was ten, she loves her job and her “firefighter family.” Liam’s as attracted to her as she to him, which is fun and flirty, until they both start to care about each other. Yet she’s the last person he can get involved with. His youngest is suffering from abandonment issues and depression, and needs stability. Even when they become involved, both Liam and Sophie know their relationship is doomed. Or is it?

One thing I’ve always loved about Kathryn’s books are that the characters seem so real. They are real people with real problems. Situations where the reader might think “Hey, that could be me.”. And while one of these characters could be your best friend or next door neighbor, they still make the book(s) interesting.

Of course it helps that I luuuuurve firefighters. In the past I’ve contemplated getting a job as Holly’s assistant so I can stare at them all day long.

Liam O’Neil has been a widower for three years. Since the day his wife died of cancer, Liam has kept his focus on his two young boys. Though he has recently started dating, he doesn’t let it touch his boys. Trying to help his youngest, Mikey, overcome his emotional problems has been no easy feat. That is yet another reason that Liam won’t get serious with a woman. That all changes when he meets Sophie Tyler.

Sophie Tyler has dreamed about being a Firefighter almost her entire life. After she lost her mother to a fire, Sophie was taken in by the men and women that saved her and her brother. Now, her fellow firefighters are more than her friends; they’re her family. When she first meets Liam, there is an instant and sizzling attraction…that they both ignore. When Sophie takes a part time job at the O’Neil pub, the attraction becomes too much to ignore.

Let me just say, the first time these two are “together”…HOT. I think what made it that hot was that Liam is perceived to be the shy, silent type. Uh-uh. He’s not fooling me.

It’s after that that the two decide that they’re going to see where their relationship can go. Liam makes it perfectly clear from the beginning that his first priority are his children. Of course that’s when everything starts going wrong.

Taking the Heat is the story of a father that is trying to do right by his children who have already lost so much. It’s about a man that has found love with someone that will always be in harms way. It’s about two people who are trying to compromise because they know they have something special. It’s about two young boys that have lost their mother in the worst way imaginable, yet they will still accept a woman in their father’s life.

The obstacles that Liam and Sophie have to overcome make the ending all the more sweet. We are able to revisit some of our favorite O’Neil siblings, including Bailey O’Neil whose husband is now the Vice President. There are some very amusing scenes between Bailey/Clay/Sophie.

Readers of Shay’s work will enjoy Liam’s book. Readers who have not read Shay’s work should definitely give it a try. You won’t be disappointed.

4 out of 5.
