PROTECTING HER WAS HIS PASSIONHigh-born though she is, Kate Campbell isn’t afraid to draw her sword. When raiders strike, she rushes into the fray…and is lucky when a mysterious Highlander shields her from a deadly blow.Swept onto his stallion, she soon discovers that her rescuer is her clan’s most hated enemy:Callum MacGregor, the man they call The Devil.Yet she cannot ignore his achingly tender touch or the way his fiery gaze leaves her breathless.

POSSESSING HER WOULD BE HIS PLEASURECallum MacGregor has taken many Campbell lives, but he’s never saved one–until now.Mesmerized by this spirited lass, he wants her by his side, even if it means holding her for ransom. As his fingers graze her sumptuous curves and tangle in her unruly tresses, Callum realizes Kate Campbell is his most dangerous foe of all.For he can’t make love to her without betraying his kinsmen and his honor…and surrendering his heart forever.

First of all, I love me some hunky highlanders. Their arrogance, how they are just tan all over and smell like man. Some of my favorite books are highlander books (The Wedding, Saving Grace, To Tame a Highlander Warrior). When I saw this book, I jumped at the chance to read it. I was very surprised that I didn’t fall head over heels with this book.

So we have Callum who is Laird of the MacGregor Clan. Kate is part of the Campbell Clan. These two clans have been feuding forever. Kate has been told stories about how evil and ruthless the MacGregors are. She was told it was Callum who killed her father.

One day, Kate is defending her home from raiders when Callum and his band of merry men appear. He sees Kate is going to be hurt so he helps her. Kate is most grateful. Then they find out who they are. Never mind he just saved her, Kate hates him. Callum decides he’s going to take Kate home to lure her uncle to him so that Callum may avenge his family.

On the way to his home, Kate learns that the stories she heard were kind of exaggerated. She also learns that her father and grandfather kept Callum and his younger sister prisoner. They weren’t exactly nice to them either. Her family is not all that innocent in the feuding. She soons finds herself falling in love with Callum despite the feud. Callum wants Kate but knows it canna happen because of her last name.

Once at Callum’s home, Kate is met with some hostility but Maggie (Callum’s younger sister) befriends her. Slowly the rest of the clan warms up to her… except Callum who doesn’t want to get close to Kate. He wants to bed her but he can’t bring himself to. In an attempt to make Kate hate him, Callum sends Kate packing. But finally common sense hits him and he goes after Kate and brings her home and they make sweet love. Once home, they hear word that Kate’s uncle and brother are on their way to rescue Kate.

While Robert, Kate’s brother, and her uncle make their way to Callum’s holding, we learn Callum never killed Kate and Robert’s father.

Honestly, the plot was interesting enough to keep me wanting to know what would happen next. It wasn’t something I fell totally in love with but I didn’t hate it either. It was just ok. I’m not sure why I couldn’t get into it. It just wasn’t working for me.

However, I thought this little tid bit was interesting. In the book, the MacGregors are outlawed and there is a little bit history about why. The author’s note goes on to explain what happened to the MacGregors afterwards. This made me curious so I looked it up in Wikipedia. It’s true. They really did feud with the Campbells. Which, I didn’t know. You can read more here. But I liked how it didn’t feel like a history lesson while reading about the MacGregor’s history and the feud.
