Tracy’s review of Love, Come to Me by Lisa Kleypas

When strong and handsome Heath Rayne pulled Lucinda Caldwell from a winter river, he rescued her from an icy death. But soon he was plunging her into a torrid torrent of passion that this New England beauty had never suspected could claim her.

Heath was unlike any other man Lucy had ever known: a dashing, mocking, sensuous Southerner who came as a stranger to Lucy’s town-and stayed as he stripped away her last shreds of resistance to the demands of desire and the flaming fulfillment of love…

Lucy has been engaged to her best friend for three years. She has known Daniel all her life and they just naturally came together as a couple. Daniel is from a very prominent family in Concord, Massachusetts and Lucy’s father is thrilled with that. Even though Daniel’s been putting off their wedding for a long time she just knows that he’s the one that will make her happiest in the world.

When Heath Rayne saves her from the icy waters of the river, and certain death, Lucy wants nothing to do with him. Yes, she’s extremely appreciative that he saved her life but he’s a Southerner! What is he doing in the north and how can he expect her to actually like him?

Heath is determined to get Lucy and keep her. When they are found in a compromising position and Lucy’s reputation is ruined she has nowhere to go but to Heath as he has offered to marry her. Their marriage starts off on a horrible note as Lucy still fancies herself in love with Daniel but eventually the marriage turns into something they both quite like. Unfortunately Heath moves them away from everything she’s known straight to Boston and life becomes a little busier.

Neither Heath nor Lucy are completely open with the other or truthful – especially Heath about his past. There are many ups and downs but what they think they have is soon put to the test when Heath’s past comes straight in to Lucy’s living room.

This is a re-release of the original book printed in 1988. From what I understand this is the 4th book that Kleypas wrote and all I have to say is “You’ve come a long way, baby!” I honestly had to remind myself more than a few times that it was written by Kleypas. She has such a wonderful flair with her characters (in recent books) that just seemed to be lacking with the characters of this story.

The book was filled with lots of different parts that all came together to make the whole and sometimes it worked for me and sometimes not. I really liked Heath and though we knew a lot about him I never really thought I truly knew him. I guess Lucy felt the same way and I hated that things didn’t get resolved between the couple until almost the last page. When it did – a lot of the explanation came from Heath’s friend and co-worker, Damon, and it just didn’t have the same wonderful effect as it would have had the explanation come from Heath himself.

Lucy was young. She was temperamental and spoiled and it really took me a while to get to like her. Heath had seen the woman that she could become – I’m glad he did because frankly I didn’t see it all that clearly until it happened.

The book had a ton of angst and miscommunications that while good in some respects really got tiresome. While this was an entertaining book it just wasn’t my favorite.

Rating: 3.25 out of 5
