What I Read Last Week

Posted October 26, 2010 by Tracy in Features | 11 Comments

What’s up? What have you all been up to? Anything fun? Tell all!
Sorry this is so late today folks, I’m just busy, busy, busy!
So this is a short work week for me as tomorrow evening I’m leaving for San Francisco to go to Yaoi-Con and to meet up with Chris, Kris, Tam & Jenre and have a jolly good time. I can’t believe I’m actually going to meet all of these fabulous ladies from all over the globe. (Chris is from Minnesota, Kris from Australia, Tam from Canada and Jenre from England) It’s amazing that we could all work our schedules to get together and it’s going to be fabulous!
My reading this week was a tad frenetic – didn’t exactly stick to my normal routine of reading different sub-genre’s (contemp, then paranormal, then historical…in no particular order). I needed to get several books read so that the reviews could post on time so that kind of directed my reading. I’m happy to say that I got it all done – yay! And now I’ll have no worries about the blog while I’m gone. Hopefully my hubby will give up his laptop for the trip cuz I need to be connected!
Not a lot of excitement here other than getting ready for my trip so on to what I read last week:
First up was book 4 in the Farm series by Andrew Grey called Love Means…Freedom. This was a book about Stone who was kicked out of his father’s house when he came out to him. He was working his way south to warmer weather but got kicked out of his ride during a blizzard. He happens upon Eli and Geoff’s farm and is taken in. He meets Preston, who is in a wheelchair after being hit by a drunk driver and is doing the riding therapy at the farm. The two hit it off but as it usually does, life creates obstacles. This was a good installment in the series. It was almost a little too sweet for me between Preston and Stone. Preston’s father was an ass and I kept thinking that it would be revealed that he was the one that was hurting Preston’s work options but that never came to light. Who knows. 🙂 Cute though. 3.5 out of 5
Saving Lady Ilsa by Crystal Kauffman was a book that I read for The Book Binge. A historical about a second son who’s father wants him to marry but he’s in a committed relationship with another man. He’s willing to marry but not have the marriage be in name only. On a whim he takes home a tailor’s assistant, Ilsa, who is being abused by the tailor and decides to make her his bride. But he and his partner, Frederick, might want to keep her around and have the marriage be more than just in name. A cute book but it was a little hard for me to think of two gay men suddenly wanting a woman. 3.5 out of 5
Next was Duchess of Sin by Laurel McKee. This is book 2 in the Daughters of Erin series. I didn’t read book 1 but didn’t feel that I was missing anything. The story revolved around an Irish Duke who is anti-Union in 1799 and a woman who is looking for some meaning in life. The two fall in love and it’s quite romantic. The book mostly takes place in Dublin. I read this one for The Book Binge – it releases on November 30th. 4 out of 5
Next was a book that I received from the author for review – Forsaken by Shadow by Kait Nolan. The first book about the Mirus, who are paranormal beings. This story was about Cade who woke up and had no memory at all. Ten years later the woman he loves shows up needing his help to save her father. She would have looked for him sooner but she was told he was dead. We get to meet shadow walker, dragon shifters, fey, vampires. It was quite a good book and not that long so if you’re looking for a quick paranormal read this might be for you. You can a short review here. 4 out of 5
Craving Beauty by Nalini Singh was my DIK reading challenge book for the month. I’ll post my review on Friday.
My Tracy’s TBR challenge read for the week was Allergies by TA Chase. A shifter story about two men who meet at work – Lou’s a wolf shifter but Ray seems to be allergic to him when he’s in his human form. The story covered them getting together and the issues around Lou “coming out” as a shifter and those issues. There was another part of the book that had some shifter hunters coming into the territory but that wasn’t dealt with by the end of the book which was a bit surprising, and a little annoying. I can only assume it will be in the next book? IDK. I’ll have to read it and see. 3.25 out of 5
Undeniably Yours by Shannon Stacey was my next read. This was another book that set with the Kowalski family. Kevin has a one night stand but he’s really likes the woman, Beth, and wants to see if more can come from it. Well it did since she got pregnant – but she wants to just stay friends – friends that are having a baby together. I’ll post my review for this on Wednesday. It releases from Carina Press on Nov. 1. 4 out of 5
Picture Postcards by JM Snyder was a very short book but one I really liked. It was about a man, Donny, who was in love with his best friend, Greg, but his friend marries a woman and moves away. They fall out of contact but suddenly Donny is getting random postcards from Greg about his feelings and how he misses Donny, etc. Only 15 pages but it packed a punch. 4 out of 5
After Midnight by Teresa Medeiros was next and this was a book I read about when Luisa Prieto was on DIK recently. It’s a historical about a woman who thinks that the man who is courting her sister might be a vampire. Whether he’s a vampire or not she finds herself falling in love with him and he with her. Good book. The end resolution was a bit rushed but overall I really liked the story, thanks Luisa! 4 out of 5
Next up was Icing on the Cake by Alison Kent. I read this one for the True Vows tour and will be posting my review on Nov. 3rd. Let me just say though that the romance was great and I very much liked Kent’s writing.
Dance with a Vampire by Fabian Black was next. Only 7 pages long. The story was told in first person but it was told as if retelling a story to the person it happened to. (example: if I was telling the story of how I met my husband to my husband). It was short but sweet. I liked it. 4 out of 5 (free on ARe)
Last on the list was the novella You Get What You Want by Janey Chapel. This was a great book. An ex con, Jay, meets Patrick, a cop, when Patrick gets a drink at the bar that Jay works at. They are incredibly attracted to each other and have a great time in the bar’s office after closing. But Patrick can’t stop thinking about Jay and has 12 hours to kill before he has to head home (to another city), so seeks out Jay’s company. The time they spent together was very touching and sexy and I really loved the emotion that was infused into the story. 5 out of 5
My Book Binge reviews that posted since last Monday
Happy Reading!

Review: Some Like It Wild by Teresa Medeiros.

Hero: Connor Kincaid
Heroine: Pamela Darby
Grade: 4.25 out of 5

It was to be her greatest masquerade . . .

Pamela Darby needs a man—preferably a Highland brute with more brawn than brains. Determined to save her sister from selling her virtue, the resourceful beauty requires a strapping specimen to pose as a duke’s long-lost heir. Pamela plans to collect the generous reward, then send him on his way. Lucky for the brazen beauty, the seductive, silver-eyed highwayman who just held up their carriage could be her man . . .

Connor Kincaid has given up on his dream of restoring his clan’s honor. And now this plucky Englishwoman is asking him to take part in a risky charade that could land them both on the gallows. Never a man to resist a challenge or the allure of a beautiful woman, Connor strikes the devil’s bargain that could seal both their fates. The highwayman and the hellion journey to London as both enemies and allies—a woman who has everything to gain and a man who has nothing to lose . . . but his heart.

I have been waiting for this book for quite a while now…well, ever since I finished Some Like It Wicked. I was mighty intrigued by Connor Kincaid in the first book and was looking forward to getting to know more about him in this book.

Teresa Medeiros didn’t disappoint…well not much anyway. My only problem with the book was that it took awhile for me to get past those first few chapters. I found that it was too easy for me to put the book down after every few paragraphs because I wasn’t as wrapped up in the story as I was instantly with Some Like It Wicked. I didn’t warm up to the story and to Pamela until they were both on their way to London to go meet the Duke.

This story is about a woman who has revenge on her mind and a man who has nothing left to lose. Pamela Darby’s mother died in a fire and she’s out to get revenge against the man she thinks is responsible for it and she needs a man to help with that…enter Connor. Connor is running out of time, he’s been gone from his people for awhile now and he needs to quit messing around and get his shit together. Together, these two come together to pull off the biggest act of their lives and hopefully fool everyone into believing their lies to keep them both from getting hanged.

Pamela wasn’t an easy heroine to like at first. It wasn’t that she was a bitch or hard to like or anything but she was kind of forgettable to me. I didn’t see what was so good about her. Pamela herself says that she’s kind of just there, existing whereas her sister gets all the attention. It wasn’t until you kept reading that you found out just how great she really is. She’s one of those take charge kind of heroines, the one that needs to be in control all of the time and when they arrive at the Duke’s house and Connor flips the script on her and starts acting like the Duke he’s pretending to be, I could not stop laughing.

I loved Connor, I thought he was a great hero. He definitely lived up to the hype that I built up over the last few months, waiting for this book to come out. I thought he was fantastic, a total stud and he made me laugh through out the entire book. Him and his band of brothers (Brodie especially) were too much fun. I enjoyed getting to know him and I’m glad that he got his happily ever after, he definitely deserved it.

As a whole, this book was another winner for me. Teresa Medeiros wrote another action packed, witty novel and I am definitely glad that I read it. I thoroughly enjoyed the book after that beginning hump and I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a great historical novel with memorable characters and a well written story.

I read the first book in this series and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Teresa Medeiros is back with Connor’s story and I’m hopeful that it will be just as great as Some Like It Wicked. Connor intrigued me in that book so I’m more than a little anxious to see him shine in his own story and the storyline for this one seems like a good one so I can’t wait to read it. This book comes out in March 31, 2009 so be sure to keep this book on your radar because this series started off with a bang, you can read my review for Some Like It Wicked, here.

Some Like It Wicked

Some like it dangerous . . .

Highland beauty Catriona Kincaid cares nothing for propriety—or even her own safety—when she storms the grounds of Newgate Prison. Determined to return to Scotland and restore her clan’s honor, she seeks the help of Sir Simon Wescott, a disgraced nobleman and notorious rogue. She is prepared to offer him both wealth and freedom, but she never dreams the wicked rake will be bold enough to demand a far more sensual prize.

Some like it seductive . . .

Simon is shocked to discover the tomboy he met long ago has blossomed into a headstrong temptress. Although he’s sworn off his dreams of becoming a hero, he can’t resist playing knight errant to Catriona’s damsel in distress. Both adventure and peril await them at her Highland home, where they will risk their lives to vanquish her enemies . . . and risk their hearts to discover a passion beyond their wildest dreams.

I’ve always loved Teresa Medeiros’ historicals. They’ve never failed to make me sigh, make me laugh, or make me cry. That changed with her last few releases when she decided to go the paranormal route. I’m still not sure why she did that; if it’s not broken, don’t fix it. So I was thrilled when I found out that Some Like It Wicked was a plain ‘ol historical.

Catriona Kincaid was sent from Scotland to her uncle’s home in England after the death of her parents. Catriona has made a life for herself in England, but she longs for the day she can return to Scotland as a part of clan Kincaid. There is only one way she’ll be able to get out of her uncle’s house and that is by marrying someone that will help her. Simon Wescott is just the man she’s looking for. If he doesn’t know her true reasons for marrying him, that’s just fine w/ her.

Simon can’t believe his eyes when Catriona shows up at Newgate. Outlining her outrageous proposition, Simon has a hard time reconciling the beautiful woman in front of him with the sixteen year old girl that left an impression on him so long ago. Though he’d like to refuse Catriona, his circumstances are dire enough that he finds himself agreeing to marry her and then deliver her to her brother in Scotland. All for a hefty price, of course.

Simon soon learns that nothing is simple when it comes to his new bride. It doesn’t take long for Simon to figure out that Catriona had her own reasons for asking him to be her husband. Though he hates to let his naive new bride down, Simon makes sure Catriona knows that he’s far from the hero that she and all of England think he is.

I really liked this book. It was a quick and easy read that left a smile on my face when I was done. The banter between Simon and Catriona could be extremely amusing at times. For example, this is right after their wedding. Catriona has agreed to consummate their marriage, but doesn’t want to feel anything so she lays down on the bed and braces herself.

“What in the bloody hell do you think you’re doing?”

Catriona opened her eyes to find Simon leaning over the bed, frowning down at her as if she’d lost the last of her wits.

She blinked up at him. “Preparing to perform my wifely duties.”

“You look more like you’re preparing to be roasted on a spit.” He grabbed her by the upper arm and hauled her to a sitting position. “If I were you, I’d sit up before someone stuffs an apple in your mouth.”

That was just one of many exchanges between Catriona and Simon that made me laugh. And while this book wasn’t my favorite TM, I still give it a:

4 out of 5.

Review: Some Like It Wicked by Teresa Medeiros.

Hero: Sir Simon Westscott
Heroine: Catriona Kincaid
Grade: 4.75 out of 5

Some like it dangerous . . .

Determined to return to Scotland and restore her clan’s honor, she seeks the help of Sir Simon Wescott, a disgraced nobleman and notorious rogue. Both adventure and peril await them at her Highland home, where they will risk their lives to vanquish her enemies . . . and risk their hearts to discover a passion beyond their wildest dreams.

2008 is the year of me trying out new to me authors. I have been reading some really great books and some not so great book. This book was my very first Teresa Medeiros and after I read this book, it caused me to want to rush out and read all the Teresa Medeiros books that I could get my hands on. I so enjoyed this story. I enjoyed the main characters, the secondary characters and the story as a whole.

The way this book opens up had me crackin’ the heck up. It was so funny and such a perfect way to start off a book. It hooked me right in. It introduced us to our hero and our heroine and what a way to meet too!

Sir Simon Westscott is my favorite kind of hero. The rakes that are hell bent on sleeping their way through the country and even though you should hate them because they’ll be sure to break your heart, you can’t help but love him and want to be the woman that reforms him. He is hilarious and sexy and everything I love in a hero. He’s that reformed rake that doesn’t believe in himself and when he finally gets it, it’s great great great!

Catriona was a fantastic heroine too. She was funny, witty and strong. She cracked me up with all of her Scottish speeches and her passion for her people. I would have loved for her to have a showdown with her cousin, Alice… I would have loved to see her lay that dummy out. Catriona was just what Simon needed and she had guts. The way she planned her marriage to Simon out had me laughing because homegirl showed up at the jail….too effing funny!

Every scene that Catriona and Simon were in together was fantastic. Their fights, their laughter, everything about this couple had me laughing, sighing and wanting more.

Teresa Medeiros is an author that I’m totally going to glom. She did a really good job with this story and she totally entertained the socks off of me. I can feel the start of something special between me and the rest of her books, that’s how much I enjoyed this book.

The only reason why this book didn’t get a perfect 5 is because Catriona did something really retarded at the end and made me want to choke her out but even still, I enjoyed the rest of the book so much that I was able to overlook that dumbness. You guys should totally read this book because it’s hecka funny and the perfect read to help you get over a bad mood. This book will turn that frown upside down.

Read it!
