To Save His Family, She May Be His Only Hope

A Strong-willed Woman

Working for the shadowy division of the Grey Justice Group is the perfect job for Kathleen Callahan. Compartmentalizing and staying detached is her specialty. Get in, do the job, get out, her motto. Wealthy businessman Eli Slater is the only man to penetrate her implacable defenses and she fights to resist him at every turn.

A Tenacious Man

Eli Slater has worked hard to overcome his family's past and repair the damage they caused. A new light comes into his life in the form of security specialist Kathleen Callahan. Even though she rejects him and everything he makes her feel, Eli is relentless in his pursuit, determined to make her his own.

An Evil No One Saw Coming

Darkness has a way of finding and destroying light and Eli learns his family's troubles are far from over. Dealing with threats and attempts on his own life is one thing but when those he loves are threatened, it's a whole new game. And he'll stop at nothing to win.

But evil has a familiar face, along with an unimaginable goal of destruction, putting both Eli and Kathleen in the crosshairs and threatening the happiness they never believed they'd find.

Eli Slater was in the first Grey Justice Series book, Nothing to Lose. Even then, I could tell that he was going to be a strong force in the series. Eli is a big believer in doing what is right, but to protect those he loves, he will bend and/or break any rule or law. Eli was in Chicago on business when he first lays eyes on Kathleen Callahan. One brief look and he knows that she’s it. The One.

Kathleen Callahan is in a Chicago courtroom when she first sees Eli. He whispers “It will be okay” and then disappears. Kathleen puts him out of her mind because her younger sister is on trial for murder. Kathleen doesn’t understand how anyone can believe that her innocent, sad-looking little sister could murder someone in cold blood. Even if he held against her will for years.

When the jury comes out, Kathleen is sure that is will be a Not Guilty verdict. When they jury reads that they have found Alice Guilty, Kathleen and Alice look at each other, both stunned. Then a woman comes screaming into the courtroom with a gun and shoots Alice. A few short hours later, Alice is dead at the hand of an assassin.

It’s Grey Justice that approaches Kathleen with a job offer and a way to prove Alice’s innocence. It’s almost too good to be true, but Kathleen jumps at the chance if only to find the person that framed Alice. Moving to Dallas brings her back into Eli Slater’s orbit, whom she recognizes immediately after she’s hired to break into his house. As for Eli, he couldn’t be more elated to have Kathleen in his home though he regrets the reason she’s there.

Someone is after Eli’s family and there is nothing more to him that family. His two daughters are the most precious and loved people in his life. He knows they won’t be safe until the threat is discovered and destroyed. He offers Kathleen a job protecting them, which she immediately turns down…until she meets them. Then she’s toast.

The plot twist and turns were unexpected, yet fit perfectly. Kathleen’s family and Eli’s family have a history that is uncovered, but it goes back quite far. Trying to figure out who is trying to harm his family while trying to break Kathleen’s walls seem next to impossible, but Eli is a patient man. I really liked Eli and his daughters. Nick and Kennedy were back for the first book. I wasn’t a big fan of Kathleen. Nope, definitely not this fan’s favorite.

It’s because of her that I have to give this book a:

Rating of 3.75 out of 5.
